The best guide to the Zapatistas
Get it! The only book you need to read to learn about the Zapatismo unless you can get into a time machine and go back to Chiapas on New Year's day 1994. Written by an amazing activist who spent ten years writing the definitive Community Guide to Environmental Health (and translated Wind in the Blood, THE book on Mayan and Chinese medicine) this combination of poetics and symbolism has the power ...

Zapatistas: Rebellion from the Grassroots to the Global (Rebels)

This book provides a critical and comprehensive overview of one of the most important rebel groups in recent history. In the early hours of January 1, 1994 a guerrilla army of indigenous Mayan peasants emerged in the far southeast of Mexico and declared "¡Ya basta!" -- "Enough!". As elites in North America celebrated the coming into force of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation declared war against ...

A riveting walk through decades of thought and struggle
Staughton Lynd is a towering figure in the radical left, from his work with the freedom schools in the South to anti-war activism to his years of working deep inside the struggle of workers and prisoners for their rights. He is both deeply thoughtful and deeply compassionate, and his intellect is impressively grounded in the lives and work of those most affected by injustice in this country. ...

Evenly blends scholarly and humanitarian perspectives
Black-and-white photographs and sketches on virtually every other page enhance The Fire & the Word: A History of the Zapatista Movement, a chronicle of the modern social movement in Mexico that had its origins in 1983 and became known to the world at large in 1994, in protest of globalization, corporate neoliberalism, the North American Free Trade Agreement and consequent end of Mexican crop ...

Highly Detailed And Informative
"The Zapatista Reader" is one of the best collections of work pertaining to the Zapatista Indian uprising in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista Army Of National Liberation announced itself to the world when it took over many provinces in Chiapas and declared that Mexico's Indian peoples would not live under the oppression and hunger offered by their corrupt government ...

Other reviewer didn't mention "Zapatistas"
Sometimes I review books I'm not familiar with, including those that I believe make a positive contribution to a worthwhile cause, or those that I feel are serving militarists and/or corporatists. John Ross' "Zapatistas" certainly falls in the former category. I have read his book "The Annexation of Mexico" and that gave me a much deeper understanding of Mexican history, and interventions by ...

This is a inexpensive book, and a great way to get up to speed on the Zapatista struggle. I was very please with it when I picked it up. It's ultimately a book of hope and is a inspiring rally call for those around the world interested in opposing neoliberalism and fighting for social justice.

Subcomandante Marcos Speaks Out:
Shadows of Tender Fury is one of the best compilations of Zapatista philosophy I have ever read. Subcomandante Marcos writes in a wonderfully satirical tone which reveals the problems suffered by the people of Chiapas and around the world. Reading the inspirational and optimistic words of Marcos gives one a better understanding of the struggles of the Zapatistas. This is excellent reading for ...
Rural Chiapas Ten Years after the Zapatista Uprising (Library of Peasant Studies)
Routledge
, 2007
Considered the most significant recent agrarian movement in Mexico, the 1994 EZLN uprising by the indigenous peasantry of Chiapas attracted world attention. Timed to coincide with the signing of the NAFTA agreement, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation reasserted the value of indigenous culture and opposed the spread of neo-liberalism associated with globalization. The essays in this collection examine the background to the 1994 ...

Excellent read on Zapatistas
This book provides a good introduction to the politics and organization of the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico. The book presents the Zapatistas in the context they have attempted to portray themselves: a movement for human dignity and for the upliftment of all peoples, not merely a movement for the rights of indigenous peoples, as the Zapatistas have been portrayed repeatedly by ...
The Zapatista Social Netwar in Mexico
David Ronfeldt
RAND Corporation
, 1999
The information revolution is leading to the rise of network forms of organization in which small, previously isolated groups can communicate, link up, and conduct coordinated joint actions as never before. This in turn is leading to a new mode of conflict--"netwar"--in which the protagonists depend on using network forms of organization, doctrine, strategy, and technology. Many actors across the spectrum of conflict--from terrorists, ...
Developing Zapatista Autonomy: Conflict and NGO Involvement in Rebel Chiapas
Niels Barmeyer
University of New Mexico Press
, 2009
Since the 1994 Zapatista uprising in the southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas, the indigenous population has seen a lot of changes. These have been particularly salient with regard to nongovernmental (NGO) development projects that have provided marginalized communities with social and economic infrastructure that operate independently from the Mexican state. NGOs and solidarity groups continue to play an increasingly important role in helping ...

I met John a few years when he'd just publish "The Annexation of Mexico." To me, this was essential to understand this crazy, amiable gringo who was so interested in Mexico and loved it so much. Now I know. Hats off for John!! Since the Zapatista uprising many lines have been written on Chiapas. Essays, criticisms, pseudo-investigative reports, and many more were produced by Mexican, US, ...

I never knew about the war to the south.
This book is an adventure, a wild ride, a plane crash to avoid a forced military landing, grab the bags of money and run. A tale of a person displaced, going on a vacation and end up killing for a cause. If you have ever been an occasional traveler in Mexico this book throws out a whole new twist, while teaching you some history about the Chiapas Indians and the Zapatista movement.
