Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake / American Ballet Theatre, Murphy, Corella
Image Entertainment, 2005
A common man's point of view.
I've had this ballet for quite a while, meaning to write a review on it, but just haven't gotten a "round tuit". If you have never gotten a "round tuit" (There is such a thing), you have not missed a heck of a lot. One of the most important things I wish for you to "get" is, that you should NOT believe everything you read in these reviews (even mine), because they are ALL debatable opinions. ...
American Gramaphone, 2003
A different side of Mannheim Steamroller
This is the first album of Mannheim Steamroller that I have heard other than their Christmas offerings. I bought it because it appeared to be patriotic music, which I love. This album did not disappoint. The first track was The Star Spangled Banner. The beginning was very dramatic, the middle was a little of a letdown, but the number ended strong. The second track, American Spirit, is one ...
Bach: Six Suites for Solo Cello
J. S. Bach
Emi Classics, 2010
The reference recording
There can be few classical music lovers who are not familiar with the true fairy-story in which, in 1890, the thirteen-year-old Pablo Casals, newly enamoured of the cello and foraging with his father in the back-street music-shops of Barcelona, happened across the Grützmacher's edition of Bach's lost "Cello Suites" on a dusty shelf. Prodigiously talented, Casals was already studying by day in the ...
Andrea Bocelli My Christmas Album
I received this CD as a Christmas gift two years ago. Since then I have listened to it many times. Andrea Bocelli has a great voice (as most of his fans know) but the songs in this CD are just awesome. As a music fanatic, my family usually gives me Cd's as presents, but this particular one has been one of the most enjoyable for me. I would recommend buying this one, either to give or keep ...
My American Dream
Neal E. Boyd
Worthy of his talent
I purchased Neal Boyd's CD for my birthday and am smiling from ear to ear. What an awesome voice this young man has! I am so glad that his first CD contains music that is worthy of his talent. I hope he continues to delight his audiences with quality work. Bravo! Well done!
Don Quixote / Baryshnikov, Harvey, American Ballet Theatre
Kultur Video, 2003
Cynthia Harvey and Mikhail Baryshnikov became a brilliant and historical artistic couple. In what concerns to their memorable and exciting role in Don Quixote, the result was simply glamorous and overwhelming. Grace and technique were bounded with steeled commitment, additionally the musical support, choreography, make-up and custom design contributed notably to make one of the most legendary and ...
Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue/An American In Paris
Rhapsody in blue
I first heard Leonard Bernstein's version of Rahpsody in Blue in the early 1960s, on a 7" vinyl record. It has remained my favourite ever since. This digital issue on a CD is excellent. Nothing has been lost in the transition from analogue to digital recording, and it is every bit as enjoyable now as it was when I first heard it forty-five years ago.
Appalachia Waltz / Ma, Meyer, O'Connor
Anyone giving this less than 4 stars must be kidding. This is beautiful. I'm not a "classical" fan, but this isn't a "classical" album. Something about the instruments being played with a bow and not picked/plucked/hit didn't sit right with me at first, it's like listening to an all winds section. But, I got over that and just let it wash over me. "First Impressions" is my favorite, it ...
Eric Whitacre: Choral Music
NAXOS AMERICAN, 2010
What a beautiful recording! Eric Whitacre is one of my favorite composers, and this chorus is breathtaking. The complex harmonies sound crystalline, and the musicianship is first-rate. This disc is a fine performance of some of Eric Whitacre's best-loved compositions!
Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology
A piece of heaven
Heartland is a haven and a piece of heaven. I was transported.
Universal Import, 2006
What an amazing sound.
I heard a track from this CD on the radio and knew I had to hear more of this wonderful group so I purchased the CD "All Angels". I have not been disappointed, each track is uplifting and exciting, beautiful and pure. I just love this CD and have since purchased another CD by 'All Angel' as well.
50 All-American Favorites
Mitch Miller & the Gang
Collector's Choice, 2005
Old style sing along
This has got to be the single best sing along CD ever put out for the sing along genertion. A real blast from the past.
Yo-Yo Ma & Bobby McFerrin: Hush
Great for kids!
This was one of my favorite tapes as a kid and am glad that it is still around so that I can give it to my sister for her kids. Who doesn't love a good excuse to sing along and make noises all at the same time?
The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin [Box Set]
Scott and Daniels, Charles N. Joplin
Great Deal on Great Music
We love this collection and it came at such a reasonable price. Our ten month old also seems to enjoy it, especially "Maple Leaf Rag".
Dvorák, Tchaikovsky, Borodin: Quartets
Emerson String Quartet
Deutsche Grammophon, 1995
Never get tired of this...
I've been listening to this CD for about two years, mostly when I'm cooking, or driving, and lately on my ipod when I run. It's very uplifting music. These quartets are so well known that everyone probably has heard them all before, but they are so good together on one CD. I love the way the Emerson String Quartet plays all three of them. They bring a lot of energy and expression to them and they ...
Fiedler's Favorite Marches
Good ol' Arthur Fiedler
I'd been wanting a collection of marches for many years. When I was a kid, one of the very few tv shows I was allowed to watch was Arthur and the Boston Pops. This is a perfect collection of marches - great to wake up to!
Glass: Violin concerto
Naxos American, 2000
Theatrical and Accessible
Albeit Glass is not for everyone (my girlfriend says he sounds like an alarm clock) but his minimalism (or more accurately, as he prefers, "theatre music") is accessible, simple and passionate. Glass provides marvelous music that sustains emotions for long amounts of time. His works are ideal for creative work (such as writing or painting) and I find that they are extremely inspirational and ...
Under the Big Top: 100 Years of Circus Music
Great American Main Street Band
Angel Records, 1993
Super fast delivery
I was throwing my daughter, who was turning 7, a carnival/circus party. I was directed to the Amazon site through a google search when looking for carnival party music. I ordered the CD on Friday and chose to have it delivered by standard delivery. Much to my surprise, it was delivered on Monday. The CD is great and just what my daughter's party needed to help set the mood. It was well ...
Favourite Cello Concertos
EMI Classics, 1990
This is a wonderful collection of Jacqueline du Pre's work, both because it traces her development as an artist, her unique interaction with various conductors and her interpretations of a variety of composers. Jacueline du Pre is a cellist for all time.
Baryshnikov Dances Sinatra and More, a.k.a Baryshnikov Dances Tharp/ Baryshnikov, American Ballet Theatre
Kultur Video, 2005
Misha Does It Again!
At 65 yrs old and new to the world of ballet (but already have seen over 25 ballets through the courtesy of Amazon.com and my library) I am a "dyed in the wool" fan of Baryshnikov. Is there anything he has danced badly? Baryshnikov Dances Sinatra and More is a must for anyone's library collection. I bought my DVD just a short time ago and received it last week. I've already watched it ...
