El Salon Mexico - Copland
I bought this CD --- expressly for this piece of music by Aaron Copland. While it isn't as bold, with the beautiful piano renditions, which are found on the soundtrack of the movie "Fiesta", Bernstein manages to capture the spirit, and intent of the piece. It's wonderful listening.

A different side of Mannheim Steamroller
This is the first album of Mannheim Steamroller that I have heard other than their Christmas offerings. I bought it because it appeared to be patriotic music, which I love. This album did not disappoint. The first track was The Star Spangled Banner. The beginning was very dramatic, the middle was a little of a letdown, but the number ended strong. The second track, American Spirit, is one ...

Rhapsody in blue
I first heard Leonard Bernstein's version of Rahpsody in Blue in the early 1960s, on a 7" vinyl record. It has remained my favourite ever since. This digital issue on a CD is excellent. Nothing has been lost in the transition from analogue to digital recording, and it is every bit as enjoyable now as it was when I first heard it forty-five years ago.

Great Intro to Modern American Classical Music
I'm not a Classical Music expert, but I found "American Classics" to be a very good collection of great 20th century American Classical musical numbers. The bulk of the selections were composed by Leonard Bernstein. However, other composers such as John Kander, Max Steiner, Aaron Copland, Stephen Sondheim, Henry Mancini, and John Williams are also included on this collection. All of the ...

Wonderful collection of Aaron Copland Hits!
Wonderful collection of Aaron Copland Hits! If a classical genius ever had a hit....like Britany. Luckily for us though. No Britany, Aaron yes! Very well done passages, Fanfare for the Common this NYS composers signature and a piece that has stuck with me since my college radio days 35 years ago! Eugene Ormandy, Leonard Bernstein and Louis Lane conducting these masterpieces, I had to have three ...

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

Late, great Bernstein
This was one of Leonard Bernstein's last recordings, and turns out to be one of his most memorable ones as well. Copland's Third Symphony uses his "Fanfare for the Common Man" as its climax, and Bernstein mines every bit of emotion you might expect. I'm not completely convinced that the symphony is necessarily one of the composer's tightest works, but Bernstein makes every minute sound ...

A treasurable concert, and a farewell to two American giants
Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein died within two months of each other in 1990 after a lifelong friendship that was also a mentor and disciple relationship. This CD captures an Oct. 1989 concert that was the last time Bernstein conducted a subscription concert with his own NY PPhil. They play magnificently and at times very sensitively. One can't help tearing up if like me you grew up on ...

Great Sampler!
This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus." There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide ...

Brilliant!!!
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

The real gems here are the "Old American Songs"
There are few composers who capture the American spirit as much as Aaron Copland; Jewish; born in Brooklyn; educated to some extent in Paris; and gay-nobody brings alive the colors and sounds of the Old West and American country life quite like him. Indeed almost every soundtrack to an old Western movie is a re-write of "Rodeo" or "Billy the Kid" Suite. Copland's "Appalacian Spring" is an ...

A good choice
I did not know all the tunes when I have ordered this CD and after listening, there are still some tunes that I do not know. However, the quality of recording is excellent, the choice of tunes is interesting and the orchestration is good. So, if you know these tunes and if you like them, you may buy this CD; it is not a bad one. It is not the one that I prefer because it is a question of personal ...

Best Collection of Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland is for me one of three of America's greatest composers of the 20th Century. Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross are the other two. Aaron Copland would have been 100 years old on November 14, 2000. In reflection I turn back to my first Copland album, "Copland's Greatest Hits." I was familiar as most people are with "Hoe Down" and that was the springboard for me. What attracted me was ...

The title says it all
Aaron Copland created classical music for about and by America. This extremely well performed and well selected album served as my true introduction to Copland's work. Vibrant, dramatic, passionate and utterly beautiful, this sampler of Copland's oevre really captivates the listener. I have lost many hours listening to "Quiet City" and "Appalacian Spring" two breathtakingly poetic pieces that ...

Superb recordings of American classics.
I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself. The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a ...

Every once in a while, after sorting through the seemingly endless piles of contemporary American composers, you find a new composer that restores your faith in American music, which often seems to be a lost cause. This cd is one of those. Theofanidis comes forth as a brand new, amazingly talented composer whose music is simply breathtaking. Rainbow Body is a true masterpiece. Beginning in the ...
