A Catalog of Riches
Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo violin (1735) are intriguingly elusive. Their brief movements offer a whirlwind tour of European manners and styles. The player's resources are laid bare -- no overarching formal design (this isn't Bach), and few openings for virtuosic display. Andrew Manze is a star of the period-instrument set. Lightning reflexes (and wits) and improvisatory flair are his ...

I need to correct some earlier reviews which state that, due to this recorded performance being played at a different pitch to the norm (a semitone lower or thereabouts), it is somehow played at the wrong tuning. From my enthusiastic layman's knowledge of period instrument performance, I know that, in the 17th, 18th centuries, etc, pitch had not been standardised at what current pitching is ...

The Best Recording I Have Heard
I have listened to at least 5 other recordings of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and found the version by L'Oiseau-Lyre the best by far. I am a singer myself, although an amateur with experience in serious choirs such as the Academic Choir Tone Tomsic from Slovenia (won the European Grand Prix 2002 at the 14th choral competition in Arezzo, Italy) and have a preference for a clear voice with a very ...

What elegance and grace is contained here
The Academy of Ancient Music has done a wonderful job with this CD of the 4 Concertos written by Vivaldi in honor of the vist of Prince Frederick Christian, Prince of Poland, to Venice. The works were spread out over several evenings so that they could be enjoyed by the illustrious guests. The Academy of Ancient Music does a superb job with this collection of music that required use of ...

Corelli and his interpreters
As the reader may already know, the opus 5 violin sonatas of Corelli were the inspiration for this orchestral interpretation of them by Geminiani. As related by Manze in his album notes, Corelli chose the significant year 1700 to publish opus 5, and according to Manze, this represents a landmark in Italian baroque, for every composer who came after has had to reckon with these sonatas, and ...

What The Baroque Alone Can Do
There's something in the greatest of baroque music that it alone can do - a kind of grace in suspended passion, angular sour biting lines that somehow are sweet without being sickly sweet, a mathematical precision that is not arid. It's all here in Arcangelo Corelli's great and generous gift to us all. I think this music is best listened to on a night when one is physically ill or one is ...

Stenhammar Concertos Together
Stenhammar's two piano concertos are delightful, especially the beautiful and melodic Number 1. This is the first recording I am aware of to put both concertos on a single disc. Turkish pianist Seta Tanyel, whose reputation rests chiefly on an outstanding series of recordings of Polish romantic piano works and concertos. These new recordings were made in November, 2008. Ms. Tanyel has the ...

Simply astounding
It is not without a sense of awe that I write these words. I believe Mr. Handel himself, had he been alive to hear this recording, would have been thoroughly delighted and not perhaps devoid of a tear or two. The grace and elegance with which these endearing sonatas are played is simply astounding. Both Manze and Egarr ought to be given knighthoods for this CD. It just has no peers. I find ...

TO START THE DAY
For a long time now, I've enjoyed starting my day with Albinoni. His music (even over Vivaldi's music) puts me in a very positive frame of mind to meet the challenges of the day. This recording on "original instruments" certainly starts my day most positively. The playing on this CD is breath taking. Hogwood and his Academy of Ancient Music are at their usual best delivering sharp and crisp ...

A recording of the century...really!
Manze has outdone himself, as have the Academy of Ancient Music. There is life, there is magic, there is some beautiful playing, there is everything you could possibly want in a recording of this wonderful score. Even if you forego period instruments, you should really try these guys out! Forget Orpheus's attempt, and please ignore the bizarre recommendation for I Musici de Montreal on Chandos ...

Manze & Mozart fit nicely
While I have always thought of Andrew Manze as a wonderful exponent of period instrument performance, I approached this recording of Mozart's K.216, K.218 & K.219 violin concertos with some trepidation. Being a fan of Trevor Pinnock's for over two decades, I could not imagine anyone else leading the English Concert. I need not have given the matter a second thought-Manze, Mozart and the English ...

Astounding recording, worthy of consideration!
I picked this disc up several years ago, and I frequently return to it whenever I crave a fine example of baroque violin. The naysayers will say what they will about Manze's departure from a literal interpretation of the music, while his advocates point out that this is very much in the style of baroque performers as historians now understand it. In either case, Manze proves that this music ...

The Extraordinary World of Biber
As Romanesca and other masters of the early music movement have made us aware in recent times, violin music did not begin with Corelli in the early 1700's. It began with a group of Italian, Austrian, and German composers in the 17th century who exploited the violin as a virtuosic and polyphonic, rather than simply lyrical, instrument. The last and greatest of these composers was Heinrich Biber. ...

Simply Amazing - Disregard the Negative Comments
I doubted whether to buy this or Reinhard Goebel's version of the sonatas. Most reviewers praised this one highly, but one was giving it really bad press, which made me doubt. I haven't bought the other one, and therefore I can't really compare them (though i spent considerable time comparing the previews provided by amazon, i feel the restricted length of the segments and the mediocre quality ...

Andrew Manze does it again!
Andrew Manze does it again! This wonderful recording features the first recorded performance of the previously lost Missa Christi Resurgentis. Apparently the piece has lain dormant for the last three hundred years and was only rediscovered recently in a Czech monestary. The piece takes a departure from the typical Easter mass in that Biber inserts beautiful solo interludes between the ...

Passionate scholarship, scholarly passion
Andrew Manze and the English Concert have given us one CD already: their performance of Mozart's "Night Music" (one of the best Mozart programs I've ever seen) redefined how Mozart should sound. Great Marketing Idea
I had heard of Andrew Manze but never heard him play. This CD is a very inexpensive introduction to an incredible Baroque violinist. He opens your ears to a completely different level of performance in this type of music. Highly recommended as an introduction, but be warned that you will soon be purchasing many more of his CDs.

Highly recommended
Very nice recording indeed. Stay away from it if you like a big choir, Parrott performs a so-called one voice per part St. John...well actually in this recording 2 voices per part. This would sound dreadful with the St. Mathew Passion, McCreesh's performance is evidence to that, but the St. John which is more compact and lean faires pretty well with it. Parrott doesn't sound that smaller ...
