Christmas Album: Original Masters5 reviews

Deutsche Grammophon, 2003

Great music and an astonishing amount of it!
The business folks at DG must have a soft spot for Christmas music, probably leftover goodwill from growing up with caroling in the snow. Certainly the German language nations seem to have excelled in producing a wealth of Christmas tunes, jingles, chorales, hymns, and rounds. This compliation is a two CD set of very good to great singers and performers who are quite to the manor born, or maybe I ...

The Best of The Best
Just be sure to buy this version (18 tracks) rather than what appears to be a very pared-down later issue (same cover, only about half a dozen tracks). This is by far the best holiday album I have ever heard. I am a double-reed player and I must take issue with the complaints about intonation and musicianship by the one negative reviewer on this page. The song selection, mix of secular and ...

Wonderful
I fell in love with Recuerdos de la Alhambra from another CD I own and wanted more music along the same lines. This 2 disc set more than met my expectations.

Sure to Spread Some Joy
I have just recently started to explore the world of choral music and I am so glad to have purchased this CD. To use an old-fashioned term, it is truly delightful. The song 'Donkey Carol' is my favorite and it is sure to bring a smile to the face of even the most misanthropic scrooge.

The Geese Are Getting Fat Again
Someone who likes my music reviews has requested a Christmas album. Well, here it is. Imagine a silent darkness with reflections of colored lights twinkling on the snow banks. Suddenly a group of carolers can be heard making their merry way toward your own front porch, where you await them with a punchbowl of wassail. That group is Chanticleer, and this is the best musical evocation of the spirit ...

The three best members
The best musical thing about this album is that the three best singers who have been part of the Irish tenors are together, John McDermott, Finbar Wright, and (the stunningly magnificent voice of) Anthony Kearns. In addition, persons of faith will find this album very prayerful and inspiring. I love listening to this CD doing nothing else but sitting quietly and listening. When it finishes I ...

An Irish Tenors Christmas
It's the Irish Tenors, what more do you need to know? It is definitely worth the money. This is a good collection of songs. I am glad they didn't waste their talents on songs like "Frosty the Snowman". Some one complained about a few non-Christmas songs. Frankly with all the "hate America" out there I am glad the Irish Tenors are different. Good job guys! As for the Southerner who disliked the ...

The Joy of Christmas26 reviews

Sony, 1997

An American reading of Christmas that unlocks the flavor.
This CD features a gay, Jewish, conductor from liberal Massachusetts and a choir full of Mormons from conservative Utah, and matches them up with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Let us meditate on the words: "New York": melting pot of the USA and of the world. Of course, this CD will explode into the most exuberant, festive, electric, over-the top, Christmas record to come out of the genre ...

The performers
Strongly agree with Timothy Kearney. Great ensemble...and it should be. There is no mention of who made up the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble. Abe Torchinsky, the late tubaist for the Philadelphia Orchestra, had told me the Ormandy would not let them be mentioned by name by name or that they were members of the orchestra. Ormandy had clout with Columbia records, thus got his way. Times have ...

Harmonia Mundi France., 1993

Great alternatives to 'Silent Night'! Buy It!
`On Yoolis Night' performed by the quartet, Anonymous 4 is another collection of works dedicated to the worship of the Virgin Mary from medieval England. Unlike `An English Ladymass' and `a Lammas Ladymass', these are more like `incidental' music for the Christmas season or, as the subtitle states, `medieval carols & motets'. Thus, these do not comprise a complete mass and there is very little ...

The CD set to get for Christmas
I will just reiterate that this is a compilation of 4 existing CDs- Legends of St. Nicholas, Wolcum Yule, On Yoolis Night, and A Star in the East. If you don't own any of them, or even if you just own one of them, I would strongly suggest buying this set, since you'll save a lot of money from buying each disc individually. Anonymous 4 performs all the music flawlessly. If you're looking for ...

Great choral versions of ancient songs
I first heard the Mediaeval Baebes on a UK double CD (Best carols in the world ever) featuring three of their trackss (Guadete, Coventry carol, Adam lay ibounden), all of which can also be found on their debut album, but my curiosity only became aroused when that UK double CD was updated and repackaged with a different title (Best Christmas carols ever) and all the Mediaeval Baebes tracks were ...

heavenly tunes
I purchased this CD the day after experiencing a performance by Anonymous 4. Friends had invited my husband and I to attend the concert, and I went blindly, having no idea what type of music I was about to hear. My mother had died earlier in the week, and I am convinced that the angels on stage that night sang just for my grieving heart. "Gloryland" continues to speak to my soul. The harmonies ...

Deeply Endearing
I was 7 years old and excited as all get out for Christmas when my stepfather brought this album into our family, and it immediately became a classic. This is by far my favorite music to listen to during christmas time. While carols become slightly stale as you grow older, the melodies and performance from this album are timeless, enchanting, historic and carry deep meaning. Now that I'm 33, I ...

Christmas Carols at there best
It does not get any better. This 2 cd set is outstanding. As one reviewer notes the second disk has many carols not heard by most people in the USA. I heard them growing up, but most are hard to find on an album. Christmas is not Christmas without King's College Choir singing carols. A great collection... :)

Wonderful Holiday Fare
You may find this CD's opening track, "Silent Night," particularly striking. It's not the usual John Freeman Young translation, but a newer one by British conductor and composer Sir David Willcocks. Since the song was never a literal translation of Josef Mohr's "Stille Nacht" text, there's certainly no reason NOT to try out a new version of the text, but the new lyrics certainly jump out at ...
