really like it
This is the first classical cd I have ever bought. The two-disc album was a great price. I really love the performance of Lynn Harrell. I like the collection of Adagios because they are perfect to fall asleep to or study to.

Cello for Relaxation9 reviews
Saint-Saëns, Bruch, ...

RCA, 2001

A Fine Way To Relax
Currently I'm enjoying this cello music while in the car, as it lessens the stress of traffic. It contains a variety of cello pieces that have beauty and grace. As a cellist I appreciate the supurb execution of each piece. This CD is everything I hoped it would be.

David Oistrakh: The Complete EMI Recordings11 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Jean Sibelius, ...

EMI Classics, 2008

A great deal in this box
For those who do not have a problem with shelf space, or those who have not yet collected much of Oistrakh's EMI legacy, this box really is a great deal. David Oistrakh was inarguably one of the 20th century's supreme artists. He won several major competitions in his life time (though, perhaps more famously, he finished 2nd to Ginette Neveu in the Wieniawski competition of 1935). He worked ...

Dvorák: Cello Concerto; Bruch: Kol Nidrei; Bloch: Schelomo9 reviews
Antonin Dvorak, Ernest Bloch, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1990

For many, the definitive Dvorák Concerto
Though the 'warhorse concerti' each have champions, there are few who would deny the elegance and passion that Pierre Fournier brought to this treasured Dvorák Cello Concerto in B minor. This recording is a true bargain at the current price and one that every lover of classical music should own. Fournier is accompanied by George Szell and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra here and the forces ...

Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor; Bruch: Violin Concerto #1; Itzhak Perlman9 reviews
Itzhak Perlman, Felix Mendelssohn, ...

EMI Classics, 1990

An Impressive Pairing of Concertos
In addition to the bargain price of this 1990 recording the music lover will find two of the more solid performances of two very popular and demanding violin concertos from the vast repertoire available. Itzhak Perlman is in top form for these performances, marrying his impeccable technique with the poetry inherent in his approach to the scores. The Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 26 by Max ...

Bruch: Concerto for violin in Gm; Scottish Fantasy11 reviews
Max Bruch, Henri Vieuxtemps, ...

RCA, 1995

Simply the Best
These classic recordings were issued in the early 1960s in excellent sound. Unlike many earlier Heifetz records, you don't have to make allowances for the substandard, boxy sound that seems to be the norm for the majority of Heifetz recordings from the 1950's (the Brahms Concerto being a notable exception). The performances are first-rate, especially the Scottish Fantasy. This has been ...

Bruch: Complete Violin Concertos / Scottish Fantasy17 reviews
Max Bruch, Karl Masur, ...

Philips, 1998

Truly Touching.............
A week ago, I knew nothing about Max Bruch, until I came across a video of Itzhak Perlman playing VC #1. I was astonished by it. I own Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, and a few other composers VC's, but Bruch's made me go WOW!! Granted this performance is by Accardo, and after purchasing and listening to this CD, I consider Perlman and Accardo of equal talent. I have always opted for complete ...

Rossini: Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)/ Bartoli, G. Quilico, Kuebler, Feller, R. Lloyd; ...13 reviews
Cecilia Bartoli, Carlos Feller

Arthaus Musik, 2003

Bartoli in "Il Barbiere"
This Barber stars Cecilia Bartoli as Rosina, Robert Lloyd as Basilio, Carlos Feller as Bartolo, David Kuebler as Almaviva, with Gabriele Ferro conducting. I really enjoyed it, but would caution some of the purists that it contains some minor cuts, such as at the end of the opera, they've dropped the scene where Bartolo wishes Rosia and the Count happiness, and also, Fiorello's recitativo prior to ...

Jacqueline du Pré - a lasting inspiration12 reviews
Antonin Dvorak, Franz Joseph Haydn, ...

EMI Classics, 1999

99% perspiration
(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc ...

Most Relaxing Classical Music. II
Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

Famous Adagios1 review
Adagio

Naxos, 1996

A great CD for background music or relaxation!
This CD is wonderful!!! We picked it up years ago while looking for Barber's Adagio. The music is so beautiful--it is great to listen to while going to sleep or just as background music in the home. If you love quiet and gentle music, this CD is perfect for you. It even soothes our new baby to sleep!

Violin Adagios7 reviews
Jules Massenet, Max Bruch, ...

Decca, 2001

Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!
"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, ...

Jascha Heifetz: The Supreme17 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, ...

RCA, 2000

Strings of Honey & A Bow of Fire
No one has quite the volcanic sound that Heifetz does - it is ironic that his stage persona led to charges of emotional coldness. The truth is, with Heifetz's blend of sound and technique, emoting wasn't necessary. I bought this set primarily for the Brahms (a piece to which I am slavishly devoted). This disk has the 1955 recording with Reiner and the Chicago. Heifetz sustained shoulder ...

Romantic Adagios9 reviews
Samuel Barber, Jules Massenet, ...

Decca, 2000

Beautiful interpretations
I agree with a previous reviewer on the minor problem of variations in volume. Beyond that, I find every piece beautiful. This interpretation of Barber's Adagio is the most passionate I have ever heard. I also find the Faure selection very touching. I love the vocals. I recommend this set to anyone, if for no other reason than the Barber piece.

Michael Rabin

EMI Classics, 2005

An essential item for any classical collection
Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very ...

The Complete EMI Recordings7 reviews

EMI Classics, 2007

Bad times for the world, but good times for the admirers of Jacqueline Du Pré
These are bad times for the world at large - as I write, the US financial system is threatening a giant systemic collapse, the US are mired in Irak and Afghanistan, with Russia occupying half of Georgia a new Cold War is looming large, Chinese babies are dying by the hundreds from poisoned milk, Iran and Korea won't be stopped from becoming nuke, and Paris Hilton is off her medication again - but ...

Bruch: Works for Clarinet & Viola10 reviews
Max Bruch, Kent Nagano, ...

Erato, 2002

Must Be Heaven
Bruch: Works for Clarient and Viola must be the music that is played in heaven. You will surely think you are there, when listening to these soul soothing yet most dramatic sounds. It is simply beautiful and may be the best hour of your day(actually about 65 minutes).Bruch, an already much admired composer and teacher of the mid 19th century to early 20th, composed these works during the later ...

Violin Concerto No 1 / Violin Concerto No 5 (Hybr)4 reviews
Bruch, Vieuxtemps, ...

RCA, 2006

Some of Heifetz's best, in state-of-the-art sound
This hybrid SACD release couples the Vieuxtemps No. 5 and Bruch Scottish Fantasy performances, originally released on one LP, with a recording of the Bruch No. 1 done with the same forces. Heifetz's blazing technique and intense vibrato often seemed best to serve what in other hands could be second-rate music; in the Bruch works especially he brings to urgent, passionate life passages that can ...

Cello Concerto5 reviews
Dvorak, Starker, ...

Mercury, 1990

When the heights become the expected
There's no reason to go into a long song and dance about Starker and Dorati here--the recordings are so famous and so coveted by collectors on original vinyl, that they're bound to make a perfect CD reissue. And they do. Starker and Dorati's LSO strings have a thing going here--they match their attacks stylistically in superb ensemble--there's just a little bit of resin, of gut, on strings ...
