Ultimate Rachmaninov: The Essential Masterpieces [Box Set]3 reviews
Sergey Rachmaninov, Edo de Waart, ...

Decca, 2007

Wonderful Value, Great Performances
This set combines Zoltan Kocsis' fine set of the piano concertos with his stunning solo recital album (containing one of the best interpretations of the 2nd piano sonata anywhere) along with a fine version of the 2nd Symphony and the Rock. The sent concludes with the Vespers performed by the St. Petersburg Chorale. Until just recently, the Kocsis albums were only available as an import. If you ...

Ravel: Bolro15 reviews
Maurice Ravel, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1999

Simply wonderful!
If you are a music buff like myself ( and I do like all kinds of music ), than what's not to like about The Boléro, by Ravel? And I don't buy into that hog-wash of a story that Ravel wrote this piece in the beginning of dementia...gimmie a break and give that man credit where credit is due.....The Boléro is a master piece! Ok...my review: It was a pleasure to shop for this Cd on Amazon ( ...

The Essential Falla2 reviews
Manuel de Falla, Rafael Frhbeck de Burgos, ...

Decca, 1999

A Very Fine Compilation
"The Essential Falla" is just that, including all of Manuel de Falla's major works (performed by the likes of Dutoit, Fruhbeck de Burgos and de Larrocha) on these two CDs. Highlights are excellent performances of Falla's three most famous works: "El amor brujo", "Noches en los jardines de Espana" and "El Sombrero de tres picos". The rest of the included music is perhaps less well-know but no ...

Saint-Saens: Carnival of the Animals10 reviews
Camille Saint-Saens, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1990

Carnival of the Animals
The music is beautiful. I used it for a music lesson for Kindergarten on how to interpret animals using music. It is also very soothing in the background for working.

Saint-Sans: Piano Concertos 1-519 reviews
Camille Saint-Saens, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1995

LES BIJOUX
This set is slightly odd in more ways than one, but not ways that seem to me to matter much. Not when compared with the set's virtues anyway. I have not experienced one instant's doubt over awarding five stars, and I recommend the set wholeheartedly, but please take note of a few points regarding the recorded quality, as they may weigh more heavily with you than they do with me. The first ...

The Collection 2: The Concerto Recordings4 reviews
Sergey Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2009

Essential Argerich recordings, despite the duplications
Imitating the format of DG's earlier collection of Argerich's complete solo albums, here in crhonological order from 1967 to 2004 we get her concerto recordings. All are self-recommending to her legion of fans and highly recommended by critics, which poses a problem for many collectors. I already own all but a handful, so even DG's bargain price isn't all that tempting. The duplications consist ...

Holst: The Planets17 reviews
Gustav Holst, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 2007

Colorful Portrayal of the Planets
This is one of the best recordings of Holst's famous masterpiece, "The Planets" I have ever heard. The instrumental color that Holst orchestrated really comes through on this performance. The Montreal Symphony plays brilliantly for Dutoit. On the cd, the organ comes through a little too heavily on "Saturn" and "Uranus". It evens sounds like an electric organ. It's too bad they didn't make use of ...

Respighi: The Pines of Rome; The Fountains of Rome; Roman Festivals15 reviews
Ottorino Respighi, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1990

The Ultimate Roman Trilogy
Well, what can I say? Charles Dutoit's rendition of Respighi's Roman Trilogy ranks among the finest. The orchestral emotions give out a spine-tingling sensation. The sound quality is beyond excellent. Tension is high and tedium is low. I'd have to say congratulations to Decca/London for giving us this fabulous creation. Pini di Roma: I first heard this in the movie Fantasia 2000, and I just ...

The #1 Opera Album44 reviews
Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, ...

Decca, 2001

The best gift ever.
I purchased this CD as a birthday gift for my sister. Because I personally know nothing about opera, I didn't know how to buy a single opera for her, or even which one she would like if I did know how to get it. So I settled on this "sampler" style Cd, and she just loved it. This is the best of the best of all opera arias and performances. My sister plays it all the time, and I think it is ...

Essential Tchaikovsky2 reviews
Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, ...

Decca, 2002

Best of the best
There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

Ultimate Chopin [Box Set]5 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 2007

Prime rib for the price of a burger
If you are new to classical, or if your classical collection has a big Chopin hole in it, this set is a great place to start. This is a budget product, but it features some of the all time great pianists from the 20th century who are also very famous for their Chopin performances. Some of the "ultimate" packages can only paint a very partial picture of the composer(s). For example, the ...

Kiri13 reviews
Kiri Te Kanawa, Giacomo Puccini, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

Brava Kiri! Brava!
Earlier this evening, I had a unique privilege in seeing Dame Kiri Te Kanawa live here in Edinburgh at Usher Hall and truly it was a captivating experience, I booked the ticket six months ealier for I know it would be sold out. Dame Kiri has always been my favourite soprano (and of course Renee Fleming), and the moment she sang her first note, it was electrifying. Even the moment she walked on ...

Romantic Adagios9 reviews
Samuel Barber, Jules Massenet, ...

Decca, 2000

Beautiful interpretations
I agree with a previous reviewer on the minor problem of variations in volume. Beyond that, I find every piece beautiful. This interpretation of Barber's Adagio is the most passionate I have ever heard. I also find the Faure selection very touching. I love the vocals. I recommend this set to anyone, if for no other reason than the Barber piece.

Violin Adagios7 reviews
Jules Massenet, Max Bruch, ...

Decca, 2001

Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!
"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, ...

Honegger: Symphonies 1-5; Pacific 231; Rugby4 reviews
Arthur Honegger, Charles Dutoit, ...

Warner Classics, 2006

Presumably the best complete cycle around, and as such an essential acquisition
This is one of the most important symphonic cycles of the twentieth century, and I always find it a little striking that Honegger music isn't better known (or better represented in the concert hall). And I can hardly imagine better performances than the energetic, full-bodied ones from the Bayerischen Rundfunks under Charles Dutoit - that is, they do not quite achieve the blistering power and ...

Saint-Sans: Danse Macabre7 reviews
Camille Saint-Saens, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1992

A Classic Dutoit/Saint-Saens Disc
This CD is absolutely essential in any classical lover's collection; it's the ideal compliation of famous and unknown Saint-Saens, all relatively "light" works, yet on further listenings, each piece grows on you and reveals hidden charms (if not depths). Dutoit's interpretations are golden--they couldn't convey the atmosphere of Saint-Saens sound world with more sympathy or clarity. Everything ...

Sweet Sorrow14 reviews
Tommaso Antonio Vitali, Fryderyk Chopin, ...

Fantastic Album
This is a great album that I listen to over and over again. It really makes me feel... Sarah Chang is one of the greatest violin players and she has done a fabulous job on this album.

Heavenly Adagios4 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Jules Massenet, ...

Decca, 2003

Two and a half hours of divine music...what more can I say?
Well, a lot! And since no one else has taken the trouble to review my favorite Adagios collection, I'm just gonna hafta go an' do it myself, won't I? Starting with the stunningly gorgeous 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' by Bach, this tape reels you in instantly. I'm not much of a fan of 'slow' and 'peaceful' music; I like the beautiful, sublime type that just makes you tingle all over whenever ...
