Haydn: The London Symphonies, Vol. 116 reviews
Franz Joseph Haydn, Colin Davis, ...

Philips, 1994

Comparison - Jochum's Set vs. Colin Davis'
Jochum and London Phil deliver the highest level of Haydn playing just like Colin Davis and Concertgebow do. I own both and tried to compare between two. Jochum adds plenty of personal touches that decidedly grab your attention. You hear poignant romanticism or Beethoven-like roar in many places. Colin Davis, by comparison, lets the music flow naturally and makes it sound more balanced. Colin ...

Essential Argerich recordings, despite the duplications
Imitating the format of DG's earlier collection of Argerich's complete solo albums, here in crhonological order from 1967 to 2004 we get her concerto recordings. All are self-recommending to her legion of fans and highly recommended by critics, which poses a problem for many collectors. I already own all but a handful, so even DG's bargain price isn't all that tempting. The duplications consist ...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I ...

Pianist of the Century (Box)8 reviews
Robert Schumann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2009

one of many "pianists of the century"
At the time these recordings were made for DGG Sviatoslav Richter was just emerging from his Soviet cocoon, having previously been isolated, for the most part, from western culture & influence. While Richter's art matured as he was exposed to musicians & musical ideas outside the iron curtain, his middle period, which these recordings capture, reflect an undiluted artistic personality that was ...

A Fine Way To Relax
Currently I'm enjoying this cello music while in the car, as it lessens the stress of traffic. It contains a variety of cello pieces that have beauty and grace. As a cellist I appreciate the supurb execution of each piece. This CD is everything I hoped it would be.

Vox (Classical), 1997

A Grand symphonic adventure
This album provides a quick exposure to some of the best movements in the best symphonies. Many of the tracks will sound familiar. They are played well and have good sound quality. As a novice musician, i have great appreciation for it.

Soothing and spiritual
I hope this very personal review will be helpful to others. I bought this CD for my father during his final days. He listened to it every evening before he went to sleep. It afforded him great comfort and peacefulness through all of his pain and suffering. As for me, I was transported to the Catholic masses I loved as a child and the fond memories of my family. Although I am no longer ...

Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies93 reviews
Beethoven's Wig

Rounder / Umgd, 2002

The entire family loves this CD
From 4 years old to 40 years old, each of us enjoys Beethoven's Wig. We have #1 and #2 and I could not tell you which the kids enjoy more - but I do have a slight preference for #1. I'm online now getting ready to purchase #3 and #4 will be for Christmas. I'm also buying #1 for a baby shower gift. My friend is not particularly "into" classical music but she laughed a good bit listening to our ...

The Best Trumpeter in the Business
It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players. Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, ...

Listen while Reading
I bought these (both CD's) simply to play while reading the Aubrey series. Did it help...yes! I not only enjoyed having the music in the background, it put me more in the mood. The music was great. The series, even more awesome knowing the Doc and the Captain might be playing while I was reading...

Haydn: Cello Concertos Nos. 1 & 27 reviews
Franz Joseph Haydn, English Chamber Orchestra

Sony, 1990

Ma Wows Yet Again!
As a young cellist, I found this to be an extremely beautiful recording of the two concertos. I really enjoyed Ma's phrasings in the C Major, which are quite different from, say, Rostropovich's recording of the same. I also found his use of dynamics to be outstanding. The contrasts are there, but not overly emphasized (as many performers do to pieces from this period). An outstanding buy.

Pianistic Glory at its best!!!!
Wow!! I have read several of the 'negative' reviews here and can only conclude (after viewing the DVD four times and counting) that what may be going on with these folks is something they themselves simply don't understand (about themselves!). They cannot or will not accept that here with Lang Lang, as with Evgeny Kissin (ever notice?) the world is being introduced to the next and even greater ...

Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76, Nos. 1-312 reviews
Franz Joseph Haydn, Kodaly Quartet

Naxos, 1992

Here we go again trying words
Well, it is not often in my music collection of several hundred "classical" CD's that I find music that still moves me to tears. The quartets are so interesting for me on all levels and how could you find them better played? Many of Haydn's quartets are worth purchase but opus 76 has a special place in this genre. Every composer has a special area where he (not many she's unfortunately) has ...

The Jane Austen Companion12 reviews

Nimbus Records, 1996

Lovely collection
Perhaps the music is not authentic to period, however it is a lovely collection. I would say it is more about mood than historical accuracy. If you want music that sets a mood, to read Austen's work, to stitch, to dine or just to listen to, this collection will give great pleasure.

Heard this with NEW appreication.........
This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). ...

Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music47 reviews

The title says it all.
I bought this CD set for my fiance who requested a "greatest hits" of classical music. He was able to recognize 90% of the pieces, and has listened to the CDs several times in the past month. I am a great fan of classical music, so I was able to recognize that many of the pieces were not performed by top-rate musicians or orchestras, but my fiance didn't notice. He simply wanted an ...

vibrant
du pre did a great job on this recording. as soon as her bow first touches the strings...no....as soon as you hear her breathe BEFORE her bow touches the strings-this recording comes alive. for listeners who are aquainted with the playing style of jacquline du pre-you can almost see her moving while she plays if you close your eyes. i love this cd!
