Thoughts deep enough for tears
Listening to this music I brought back to the America of my childhood and early years. Excuse the subjectivity of this review. I don't think there is anyone who doubts the greatness of this music. And the performers here Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Ella, Jolson, Tony Bennett, Fred Astraire, Doris Day are the tops of the top. That is to say as a review there is really nothing more to ...

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!
This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some of which still show some of their age, but come across quite well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to ...

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant. You certainly can't beat the price!

Rhapsody in blue
I first heard Leonard Bernstein's version of Rahpsody in Blue in the early 1960s, on a 7" vinyl record. It has remained my favourite ever since. This digital issue on a CD is excellent. Nothing has been lost in the transition from analogue to digital recording, and it is every bit as enjoyable now as it was when I first heard it forty-five years ago.

Great singer and actress all in one
The first time I saw Kristin Chenoweth in a movie was the TV "Music Man". Just lately I listened to the "Wicked" soundtrack, and after that, I've been listening to Kristin's CDs whenever I can. This one is a jazzy, Broadway-type CD with fun, engaging songs. She's a different type of singer, and while not everyone might enjoy her voice, I really do. If you like Broadway, jazz, drama, romance, ...

Porgy and Bess
I read about this performance in Alex Ross's "The Rest Is Noise - Listening to the 20th Century" - a wonderful book, by the way. I live in Australia where, because of the copyright conditions of the Gershwin estate, "Porgy and Bess" is rarely performed. I'm a classical musician (singer, conductor) with a low-level professional career behind me. I have yet to see "Porgy and Bess" live. It is ...

Enchanting
A very talented (to say the least) young musician playing the beautiful music of a very talented composer. I listen over and over again and especially like his rendition of "Embraceable You" and "But Not For Me" . . I'm a romantic!

Simply wonderful!
I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the ...

The Finest Recordings of These Four Selections
George Gershwin (1898-1937) first made a name for himself as the composer of one memorable popular song after another--songs that have proven remarkably durable and have entered our collective consciousness to become "great standards" by which others are judged. In 1924 he began to leap the gulf between "popular" and "serious" music, and between 1924 and his untimely death in 1937 he created a ...

The Best of Renee Fleming
This is a compilation of Renee Fleming's best works. I got it primarily for Rusalka's song to the Moon (O Silver Moon) but all the other arias are just perfect. She sings her classic, "Summertime" from Porgy & Bess (another of my favorites) so perfectly and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (she even sang this one at Barak Obama's inauguration ceremony. If you want to hear some of the most famous arias ...

The best SACD transfer, period!
It is unbelievable to listen to these almost 50 years old RCA recordings. The sound stage and transparency, spatial information and autholative bass equal to today's best audiophile recordings. You can "SEE" the interior of Boston symphony hall and feel the walls vibrating in awesome tutti! Wonderful performance and incredible recording technique. Must Have!

Great Music Compilation
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

This box selection is enjoyable
Cheers to those with drive to attain "real" music student status. However, I just want to listen to music passages I have found enjoyable over the years. There is no pretense of this selection being a student workbook of classical music for the serious scholar - it is just an enjoyable alternative to that shared by those offensively loud vehicles near me at the stoplight.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
