Music From the Royal Court3 reviews
Philip Jones Brass Ensemble

Umvd Labels, 2003

My best baroque CD
Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of ...

The Essential Canadian Brass5 reviews
Richard [1] Strauss, Antonio Vivaldi, ...

Philips, 1992

The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass
If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!

Purists look elsewhere... All else, buy now!
Imagine a pastry chef of a future age who sees a perfect color picture of an historical artifact known as a "hamburger." Using this image, he perfectly recreates it using the tool of his trade, the primary ingredients being meringue for the bun and mousse for the burger. The result is absolutely delicious - in fact, a superlative dessert. Sometime later, a legitimate hamburger recipe is ...

This is a must for any trombone player
I listened to just a couple of the clips that were presented on this page and...wow...these guys are hard-core-bad-to-the-bone. I am an avid trombone player and I love this CD. To me it shows off just how capable and versatile the instrument that we all love is.

Instruments of the Orchestra8 reviews
Various Artists

Naxos, 2002

What a fabulous resource!
As a music educator, I've found the recorded excerpts to be wonderfully and logically organized and presented. I've always been an instrumental music teacher only, but find myself teaching general music classes this year, and absolutely love what I've used so far. The last disc alone shows the fascinating evolution of the modern orchestra. Every other track is narrative text, the script of ...

Quiet Christmas music
This is a unique CD programed for late night Christmas Tide. The title is true to the programing which, without exception is reflective arrangements for times of quiet contemplation during the Christmas season.

The Italian Album6 reviews
Giovanni Gabrieli, Antonio Vivaldi, ...

Sony, 1990

Bravo!
I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florence during my trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it has captured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favorite of all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumental and can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir the wanderlust for a trip back to ...

Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time6 reviews
Ultimate Classical Christmas Record of All Time

Sony, 2002

Breathtakingly beautiful!
Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful. We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico! It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

Best of L.A.G.Q.6 reviews
et al Aaron Copland (Composer)

Delos Records, 1998

Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy
Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one. What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

The Baroque Christmas Album1 review
Johann Sebastian Bach, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, ...

Archiv Produktion, 2005

5-PLUS Stars
There are not many things in life that I would describe as just Gorgeous -- but this album is definitely one of them. The selections, the arrangements, the production quality, all are clean, yet lush -- simultaneously light and rich. The effect is wonderful. This may not appeal to hardest-core periodists, but for beautiful music lovingly performed, the album is very hard to beat. Not only ...

Sanctus: Meditation for the Soul2 reviews
Pomerium, Gabrieli Consort

Archiv Produktion, 1996

Truly meditation and relief for soul. Contributed by Pope's brother and the world oldest boy choir
For the ones (as me) not particularly versed in XV-th-XVI-th sacred music, this disc is interesting by exposing 7 different great composers, Guillaume Dufay (~1377-1474), Antoine Busnois (~1430-1492), Josquin des Prez (~1450-1521), Cristóbal de Morales (~1500-1553), Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594), William Byrd (1540-1623), Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), thus framing Palestrina ...

Gabrieli: The Canzonas and Sonatas from Sacrae Symphoniae 15973 reviews
Giovanni Gabrieli, Timothy Roberts, ...

Hyperion UK, 1997

Incredible
I can't say enough about this disc. For anyone who loves antiphonal music and wants to hear it played on original late 16th / early 17th century intstruments, buy this album FIRST. The technique is incredible; the players CLEARLY know what they're doing. The music is very stylistic, and if I may steal Mersenne's quote, the cornetts and sackbutts sound like "Rays of sunlight piercing the ...

Greatest Hits: Trumpet6 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, ...

Sony, 1994

A Wonderful Collection
This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Gabrieli · Monteverdi · Vivaldi - Venetian Church Music / Taverner Consort, Choir & Players · Andrew Parrott8 reviews
Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

a voice teacher and early music fan
AN OUTSTANDING VARIETY OF EARLY MUSIC Polychoral music-music written for several groups of musicians separated spatially-was not peculiar to Venice, but it was associated with the Basilica of San Marco and ceremonial events in the Venetian cultural calendar. Chordal writing reached its peak in the polychoral works of Giovanni Gabrieli(1555-1612), the principal church composer in Italy of ...

Music for San Rocco8 reviews
Gabrieli Consort, Mccreesh

Archiv Produktion, 1996

Gabrieli, the original surround sound performer
Being only marginally acquainted with the music of Gabrieli and his period, I have little to add to comments already made. I must confess that two discs worth of 16th century liturgical music runs a little long for me. I'll focus instead on the sound of the SACD version. This was one of my first SACD purchases, and I chose it because I knew that Gabrieli wrote for multiple choirs situated in ...

Research Composer, Giovanni Antonio Rigatti, ...

Polygram Records, 1993

An amazing reproduction of 17th century Vespers
Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players have put together an entirely captivating re-creation of a Vespers service, the Catholic office of evening prayer, as it might have been performed at St. Mark's in Venice in the early 17th century. From the sacristy bell, to the chants, to the massive and breathtaking polychoral hymns and psalms, McCreesh weaves a tapestry of sound that is ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2005

A Must Have For All Trumpet Players
I purchased this recording as a reference recording for my trumpet studio. As I started to listen to it, I realized that it contains some of the absolute greatest classical trumpet recordings there are. Rafael Mendez is mind-blowing, Bud Herseth's rendition of the Haydn Concerto is stunningly flawless and Abblasen is a great way to open this 2-CD set. It contains a sample of almost all the ...
