Very Informative and Enjoyable
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical ...

VALUE VALUE VALUE
I think that this is really one of the best values you're going to find anywhere in the world of classical music, especially for beginners. You're getting 10 CDs, each filled almost to capacity, with the most famous works from the most famous composers in the history of classical music. The sound quality is excellent on every disc. While I would have made some replacements on the list of who ...

share Ligeti's fascination with mechanical things.
First off, I should inform you that Sony's Ligeti Edition series is being deleted so if you're interested in this stuff, you should pick up the ones you want as soon as you can. Ligeti Edition 5 is a good one. No, it's AWESOME. If you have any interest in "mechanical music," this should be essential. Poeme Symphonique for 100 Metronomes was the main thing I wanted to hear on this collection. The ...

Ligeti's most important keyboard music
This disk picks up most of the keyboard works that were not covered in LE3. Highlights here are Continuum, the pipe organ works, and the Three Pieces for Two Pianos. Three Pieces was written toward the end of Ligeti's second style period. It continues in the vein of Ligeti's "metronome" works such as the not entirely serious Poème Symphonique and the very serious and astonishing third movement ...

a handful of great Ligeti works.
As a compilation, musically speaking, Edition 2 is probably my least favorite of the Sony Ligeti Edition collection. Many of the pieces come from traditional Hungarian sources, conceived while Ligeti was still in his early years. They are pretty, but also pretty straightforward and conventional, and other than their simple pleasantness and occasionally yummy dissonances, they aren't really ...

I have probably played this cd 20 times since first getting it a few weeks ago. I was first introduced to Ligeti's music a long time ago when I saw Stanley Kubrick's brilliant film "2001: A Space Odyssey" when it first came out in the theater's in the late 60's. Ligeti's music, of course, played a prominent role in that film, and was also used in Kubrick's "The Shining" and the god-awful ...

One of the best CDs of contemporary music.
There're not many CDs like this available on the stores. It's the clear example of perfect CD in its repertoire. A wonderful composer, perfect performances and excellent recordings, together with a very good booklet and presentation. Some of the works are among the best of Ligeti, in my opinion. The Concert Romanesc (1951), is in clear debt with Bartók language. We have to remember Ligeti is ...

Definitive recordings of Ligeti's string quartets
Sony's Ligeti Edition kicks off with a disk devoted to the string quartets. It's a good place to start. Like Ives, Ligeti wrote only two string quartets: an early one in a largely derivative style and a later one that epitomizes the composer's unique mature style. Also like Ives, Ligeti's two quartets, especially No. 2, are good enough to position him among the 20th Century most important ...

Highly recommended box-set
This box should probably be your first choice if you want to get acquainted with the works of Ligeti. The recordings in this box are overseen by Ligeti himself, and they were supposed to be definitive recordings that after his death could show conductors how his music was supposed to be played. As detailed in Richard Steinitz' Ligeti biography, it took two record companies to bring us the ...

Unsurpassed
This is the recording to get. I've heard all the others (Vegh, Pauk, et al.) and none match Keller & Pilz for luscious tone and idiomatic phrasing. They make these pieces sound the way they were meant to: like vibrant folk tunes played with flawless technique, not like some dry student exercises. Plus, it's beautifully recorded.

A Fine and Affordable Library of the Works of György Ligeti
György Ligeti died in 2006 after a long and productive life as a composer who challenged the creativity of even his most avant-garde colleagues. Teldec produced a magnificent series of CDs, The Ligeti Project, which contain some of the most thrilling performances of the composer's well-known works as well as much of the esoterica: it is big, it is expensive in toto. This 4-disc album, while ...

"Come with me, under my coat"
"And we will drink our fill..." These are the first two strophes of Samuel Barber's "The Coolin," one of the three songs in his choral song cycle "Reincarnations." A friend recommended that I listen to this song, someone who had fond memories of singing it but who had yet to hear a satisfactory recording of the work. Given the enthusiasm, even exuberence, that she displayed regarding the ...

Picks up where Ligeti Edition 2 leaves off
Following onto LE2, which has most of the a cappella vocal music, this CD offers the Nonsense Madrigals, and several works for voice and accompaniment (ranging from piano up to chamber orchestra). To get the works for voice and full orchestra, such as the Requiem, you're directed to Teldec's Ligeti Project or the older recordings on Wergo or Deutsche Grammophon. Ligeti's only opera is on LE8. And ...

Essential recording of a XXth century masterpiece.
Ligeti's Requiem is one of the few works produced by the XXth century "avant-garde" that can actually be enjoyed by a regular concert audience. Without being a "pop" tuneful work this music is one of the most beatiful I've ever heard and that is due to the amazing palette of atmospheres and moods it displays: fear, anger, spirituality, contemplation, etc. This version by Gielen is finely recorded ...

The fourth disc of Warner Classics' fresh and exciting Ligeti Project contains the composer's recent "Hamburg Concerto" as well as two other works performed by the Asko/Schoenberg Ensemble. If you're new to Ligeti, this is worth getting because it contains his "Requiem", one of his most famous and also most accessible works, in a new performance by the Berliner Philharmonik. In the "Hamburg ...

Sensational Performances
The big news here is the performances of the Parker Quartet, a group of young musicians who came out of the New England Conservatory. The members are Daniel Chong and Karen Kim, violins, Jessica Bodner, viola and Kee-Hyun Kim, cello. In this recording of the Ligeti string quartets they are up against some of the most admired quartets around -- e.g., the Arditti and the Hagen Quartets -- and they ...

This set has wonderful qualities on quite a few levels. What you have here are clear modern renditions of pieces by some of the best known composing names of the last century, recorded in modern sound by one of my personal favorite cellists around today. Few recitals are so spirited and exciting!
This is an absolutely spectacular disc with revelatory playing. It is often said that today's pianists aren't very interesting compared to artists of the past, but Pierre-Laurent Aimard proves exactly the opposite here. His recital at Carnegie Hall in December 2001 was a great event and it has fortunately been captured on disc. Throughout the whole disc you can feel the thrill that hangs over the ...
