American takes us to Europe
To be honest, I really could care less that Arthur Foote "borrowed" his sound from Brahms, Dvorak, Shumann and Mendelssohn. It's just refreshing to hear music that "sounds" like something I already know, but yet is unfamiliar because it really isn't from any of the aforementioned composers. The recording which pairs the Da Vinci Quartet with an excellent pianist is wonderful!

Chamber and Gamelan works
The harrison works on this disc are absoultely fabulous. Particularly haunting was a 'concerto' for horn and gamelan ensemble. Couldn't get the tune out of my head!

Fantastic bargain at the price
We all have heard of the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH; but how many of us have heard a good deal of MacDowell's music other than "To a Wild Rose" during music appreciation classes or possibly his "Indian Suite" back in the old LP days over the radio? Noted mostly for his piano music, MacDowell has left a legacy that is pretty much in the European tradition in which he studied but still ...

AN ENCHANTING PARCEL OF NEGLECTED MACDOWELL
A master of the piano vignette, as these pieces aptly and beautifully illustrate, MacDowell (1860-1908) remains, for the most part, remembered solely as the composer of "To A Wild Rose," the first piece in his collection of Woodland Sketches, Op. 51, incomprehensible as it may seem. MacDowell is a bit of a paradox. Musically schooled in Europe, admired by Liszt, taught by Raff, and having ...

A Great Intro to American Classical Music - Almost a Short Course!
Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a ...

Music I listen to again and again.
This isn't important or innovative music, it's just beautiful. I play all three volumes of Foote's Naxos discs quietly at work again and again, and never tire of them.

Only part of a wonderful series
This is only the second volume in what is now a four volume series on Naxos label. The really good news is that these are from the same masters from which came the more expensive Marco Polo sets and here they are at half the price. No matter that our great American composer is more often than not indistinguishable from many European composers of his time. His "Woodland" pieces are marvelous ...

Great Introduction to Harrison
This CRI recording was my first introduction to the music of Lou Harrison. While initially I was prepared to dismiss the music as gimmicky, i was quickly won over by Harrison's artistry, craft, flare for beautiful melody and sonic pallet. All of these things are evident in this wonderful collection. Concerto in Slendro is a great example of Harrison's "Eastern music with Western instruments" ...

Good performance of good music
I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny ...
