Pachelbel Canon, Albinoni Adagio & Other Baroque Melodies11 reviews
Tomaso Albinoni, Johann Pachelbel, ...

RCA, 1991

WARNING!! A great cd BUT....
I know I gave this cd 5 stars; it deserves it. Every piece is so finely textured and lush. BUT the version of the Canon on this cd, as beautiful as it is, IS NOT the original version recorded by Paillard. This cd contains a new version which has been slightly re-arranged and speeded up a bit. The version on this cd is a minute shorter than the original which can be found on the ERATO cd, ...

Pachelbel Canon
This is the best version of the Pachelbel Canon as far as I'm concerned.

The Magic of the French Horn8 reviews

Erato, 1994

Barboteu at his very best (with lots of vibrato)
Georges Barboteu was one of the most technically and musically gifted horn players ever recorded. He can move you with his wonderful phrasing and ample vibrato. The vibrato may be too amply for some, but if you are not die-hard no-vibrato horn fans, this CD is for you. If you want to hear more of Georges Barboteu, you can hear him in French Baroque fanfares and suites: Simphonies & ...

Great Sampler!
This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus." There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide ...

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!
Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music. If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put ...

Classic Love
Classic Love

Elektra / Wea, 1996

Elgar's Salut d'amour performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Davis opens this two-CD set. After that, we go on a bumpy ride over performances of drastically varying quality. The "Poco Allegretto" from Brahms's Symphony No. 3 under Christoph von Dohnányi and the Cleveland Orchestra is breathtaking. Throughout the program there are a number of bite-sized editions of selections apparently deemed too long to sit through in their ...

A PERFECT "10". UNBELIEVEABLY BEAUTIFUL!
THIS CD IS A PERFECT "10". Superlative performances, arrangements, and outstanding sound quality. The Zipoli work has such luscious textures and interplay of oboe, cello and orchestra that grown men are moved to tears. Yes, its that good.

Ultimate Baroque Collection

Elektra / Wea, 1993

Best collection I've come across on one CD.
This CD contains a very nice collection of Baroque snippets from several composers of the period. The composition variety is good and I give high marks for the interpretation on all the pieces presented.

Good Starter Disc
This was my first clarinet CD ever (my parents put it in my Christmas stocking when I was in high school). This disc contains some very good clarinet music, and would make a good introduction CD for someone wanting a taste of clarinet music. If you already have a few clarinet CDs, this disc may be of limited interest, mostly because it's repertoire is limited and contains pieces that ...

Telemann, Andre

Elektra / Wea, 1996

Maurice Andre is the GREATEST!
These are undoubtedly some of the greatest recordings of Telemann! Mr. Andre plays with such finesse and he has such great command over the instrument! It is impossible not to fall in love with his sound! Anybody who loves to listen to the trumpet needs this CD! WONDERFUL!

A Dream Album
Almost 2 hours of "distilled" Bach- selections of the sweetest adagios by some of the world's best interpreters of the Baroque. Contains the most melodious extracts from the world's greatest masterpieces. The solos by flutist, Jean-Pierre Rampal have a dream-like quality of tonal purity: fitting preludes to choral motets by the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Orchestre de Chambre de ...

Boston Skyline, 1995

Paillard and Handel - A great combination!
For years I lamented selling my classical LP collection partly because of the loss of the wonderful Jean-Francois Paillard/Marie-Claire Alain recordings of Handel's Op. 4 and 7, also known as the Organ Concertos. Vinyl availability here in the states of this complete set was at best limited and I assumed Erato would quickly offer these splendid performances on CD but for me, that was not the ...

Erato, 1996

Tried and True and Majestic Too
To the lady from New Zealand. I understand you may not like this style of music but that does not mean you should say that people who do like it have no taste. This is NOT music for a small intimate wedding. I agree with that. However, this music is wonderful for large weddings in large churches with large organs. Just like quiet, romantic music for a small intimate wedding will bring the ...

Best of5 reviews
Rampal

Erato, 1993

And Rampal gave the flute life...
People may say that James Galway is the best flutist around, but after hearing his music with a big disappointment, I decided to see what the other master flutist had to offer. Jean-Pierre Rampal's flute music is, without doubt, the most brilliantly expressed. It is a technical work of art that only a true master flutist can do. His performance is highly expressed through technical mastery. ...

Handel's Largos3 reviews
G.F. Handel

Elektra / Wea, 2001

Shows Breath & Depth of This Composer
Handel certainly was prolific composer, and this rich two-volume set of Largos is exemplary proof of such in Largo form. From operas and orchestral pieces, this is full of sumputuous music from concertos to operetic pieces. Especially fond of work from Concerto Grosso, Xerxes exerpts, and organ work. Marvelous collection, relaxing and sensual.

Handel: The Organ Concertos, Vol. 12 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Jean-François Paillard Chamber Orchestra, ...

Boston Skyline, 1995

The best
This is not only the best recording of Haendel's 16 organ concertos, but I would say the benchmark, against which all the other recordings are measured. Marie Claire Alain is one of the greatest organists of the 20th century, Jean-Francois Paillard and his orchestra made their reputation in hundreds of recordings of baroque and historical music. The organ here is somehow not as powerful as the ...

Pachelbel - Canon · Albinoni - Adagio / Ensemble de Chambre Jean-Francois Paillard2 reviews
Johann Pachelbel, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Warner Music France, 1991

Our best loved CD
This is an uplifting, inspiring piece that we play over and over again. Our kids (7 and 10) love it and asked to have the CD also in our new car. Now carpooling, its the one requested and all of the kids (ages 6 to 11) quiet down and listen. The Pachelbel Canon is a joy. All of the selections are terrific. I can't imagine ever tiring of it.
