accurate and emotionally moving on period instruments with medium sized choir and orchestra
This version of the Messiah by Gardiner is historically accurate but it is also emotionally and dramatically moving. It is on period instruments with a medium sized choir and orchestra. Hogwood's version is also on period instruments but it lacks emotion and drama whereas Gardiner's is more dramatic and more emotional.

Not "Ultimate", but Wonderful!
As good a guitarist as Julian Bream is, one must begin by acknowledging that the title of this 2-CD set containing 32 admittedly seminal pieces written for hand-played strings ( primarily, the lute) is a tad hyperbolistic. An "Ultimate" collection of anything would have to be more complete, by definition, than any two CDs can be and, again, it almost goes without saying that no two people are apt ...

A Little Advice On Listening
I hope you are convinced by some of the prior reviews that this is an amazing version of the B Minor Mass but please note that this is not your ordinary piece of vocal music. I would like to be so bold as to offer a little advice on listening. You can think I am strange by doing so but that's OK. Take what you can use. If you are not Christian or Catholic, convert for two hours (no holy ...

JOHN ELIOT'S CHRISTMAS FAVES
This disc is a bit of an oddity. I can give it a perfectly sincere recommendation, but I think I had better explain myself carefully, and explain exactly what I am recommending. The spirit of the selection is much what you would expect in a disc entitled `Christmas Treats from JSB' or `Immortal Melodies from The Christmas Oratorio' or something of that sort. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is not an ...

Glorious! Another jewel in the crown...
Gardiner's outstanding cantata series continues and this one, Volume 17, is no exception. Pointed solos along with an agile, well honed chorus present a treasure-trove of discoveries as these cantatas are seldom performed today. This special volume is a great value as you get two discs for the price of one!

Great Series!!!
This Christmas cantata volume is the crown jewel of the Monteverdi Choir's series of complete Bach cantatas. The opening chorus of the first cantata on this CD is what heaven must sound like. Unlike a few recordings I've heard of these cantatas where the instruments overpower the voices, John Gardiner does a great job of balancing out the orchestra and choir. I listened to this CD constantly ...

Monteverdi's stunning resume piece
What a job application. Looking for work around 1610, Claudio Monteverdi composed this massive work in hopes of Vatican employment. He even dedicated it to his anticipated future boss, Pope Paul V - kissing up has a long tradition in the Western world. Inexplicably, the Vatican wasn't moved. Instead, Monteverdi accepted the patronage of the Doge in Venice and became their Maestro di Capella in ...

5-PLUS Stars
There are not many things in life that I would describe as just Gorgeous -- but this album is definitely one of them. The selections, the arrangements, the production quality, all are clean, yet lush -- simultaneously light and rich. The effect is wonderful. This may not appeal to hardest-core periodists, but for beautiful music lovingly performed, the album is very hard to beat. Not only ...

Wonderful Selection of not as famous but good works!
The two works on this CD that are most known are The Magic Flute Overture, which is filled with brilliance from measure one to the end, and the opening piece to the movie Amadeus, the G Minor Symphony. These two pieces are superb but just because they are more known, doesn't mean they are better than the rest of the works on this CD. The Sonata in D Major for two pianos is incredibly ...

Ultimately Satisfying
A wonderful companion to the first set, this edition includes 20 beautifully recorded pieces by one of the master guitarists of the twentieth century. And Bream is at his best in these recordings, showing off his amazing technique, as well as his almost daunting emotional power. An amazing gift to guitarists and music lovers.

Lovely
I purchased this for my daughter because it includes the Brahms' lullaby at the very end. When I first sang this lullaby to her when she was two and a half, she cried. I asked, "Why are you crying?" She said, "Because it's so pretty." We were in the guest bedroom on the second floor of her grandparents' house in Portland, a little bungalow in Northeast, the night before the Portland Marathon. ...

Awesome voices
This CD is eloquent and so magnetically alluring. It begins with the ever so popular (sopranist) Ms. Leontyne Price's "Ave Maria" and finishes beautifully with the entire operatic voices of the English Choir in the song "Amen". I'm always floored by the voices of Ms. Leontyne Price and Mr. Jose Carrera. The instrumentalists and the great composing of many of the fine songs listed on this CD is ...

Sparkling, Brilliant Production
First a disclaimer: I am a teenage music student and not a "qualified," per se, music critic. I think, though, that I fairly represent many lay opera fans in my opinions, so I hope my review will be worthwhile. The only recording I have compared this to is the Schwarzkopf recording & the video with Joan Sutherland. I prefer this to both because, although I am aware that the Schwarzkopf ...

Exquisite!
I'm not typically a big period instruments fan, but this recording was fabulous. With the singing and excitement at such a high level, I really didn't even notice the period instrumentation. I have not listened to all of the other versions, so I have no basis for comparisons, but I have a hard time believing that ANYONE would be disappointed with this recording. This is far superior to the ...

Great performance; great recording
These Enigma Variations are as good as any I've ever heard, and better than most. That dark, fullbodied sound really helps. The Alassio overture is indeed Straussian, and that's no drawback. The great Sospiri, one of the most beautiful works I know, doesn't match Hurst's or Barbirolli's versions precisely because the sound is too big, with an overabundance of strings. But Gardiner's version is ...

Among the Finest of the Available Recordings
Mozart's MASS IN C MINOR K 427 can be a mixed bag if not under the hands of the right conductor. The work itself is spotty with elements of radiant, exalting beauty along side some (pardon the thought) filler: Mozart himself was aware of this, as the work is unfinished. In the minds of the great conductors the work can sound cohesive and resplendent: at a recent concert with Esa-Pekka Salonen ...

delightful cantata
I found this album is shown as excellect level as others performed by Gardiner and the Monteverdi choir. I especially want to pick up good soprano, Nacy Argenta, her beautiful performance to lyric dream. I recommand the "Schwingt freudig euch empor" BWV 36, althought it isn't famous in Bach's articles. However, I enjoy its beauty and think it's worth sharing with you.

Bach's Magnificat is Here Magnificent!
This is a magnificent recording of Bach's Magnificat. The sound quality is superb, the soloists and choir clear and moving, and the orchestra flawless in execution. In fact, the Gardiner series of recordings (the Mass in B minor, St. Matthew's Passion, St. John's Passion, and the Christmas Oratorio), can easily form a "backbone" of a classical music collection due to their stunning clarity, ...
