Musical Catnip
This is one of my favorite CDs. Being a cellist and particularly susceptible to melancholy music anyway, this CD is like catnip to me. I've performed the Tallis Fantasia and bought and listened to numerous performances of it- including the Penguin Guide's top recommendation- but no performance I've ever heard comes anywhere close to this one in terms of ensemble playing, musical conviction and ...
John Knowles Paine: Mass In D

A great work by a neglected great American
Clearly, John Knowles Paine composed this Mass in D after studying Beethoven's great Mass in D. The resemblances in text treatment and musical structure of these two works make this obvious. Of course, Paine's mass is inferior to Beethoven's masterpiece. Still, it is a beautiful achievement. Even as a young, inexperienced composer, Paine is inspired with fresh and expressive music for the ...

Great Music
The music on this album is very well done. Amazon's description was sketchy and after receiving the album I realized I already owned it. Fortunately I have friends that would appreciate it so it will make a wonderful gift.

Wonderful Works for Orchestra
This Telarc SACD is a reissue of some of Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra's recordings of some orchestral favorites that originally appeared on Two separate CDs. They were recorded back in the early days of digital recording, using the Soundstream System. Unfortunatly the CD could not recreate the full sound being recorded, but the SACD can finally bring us the full ...

Best of the best!
I first purchased "Classics for All Seasons: Winter" as a personal Christmas gift. If a CD could be worn out, I would have done so. Not only are these excellent performances of favorites, the variety of the selections saves the listener from a monotony of only choral/instumental pieces. I was delighted to find the complete BOX SET to add Spring, Summer, and Autumn to my CD carousel. The ...

One of the best Brahms Quintet Recordings available
Many do not know of this recording, which was made years ago. It is with George Silfies, former Principal Clarinet of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. This is one of the most musical sets of performances that is available, especially those performances that include the clarinet. I highly recommend this recording!

Contains the Best Recording of Swan Lake Available
This 6-CD set of Tchaikovsky's 3 ballets contains the very best recording of the complete Swan Lake available. Antal Dorati was the best Tchaikovsky conductor, especially when it came to his ballets. His recording of Sleeping Beauty with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is still the best one ever recorded. He also recorded the Nutcracker twice, both versions oustanding. However he only recorded ...

The Best Recording of Swan Lake!
It's Tchaikovsky at his greatest, and this interpretation of his ballet music is unparalled. It's so poignantly performed, and all four acts are amazing with the full orchestra that you can almost see the ballet as you listen. I'd know this version immediately if I heard it anywhere! I've listened to this 2-disc "Swan Lake" all my life, and now that it's beginning to skip, I'm going to get ...

The clearest delivery of a text
William Bolcom's fourth Symphony is a wonderful piece of music. It is huge, diverse and wonderfully focused. The most notable thing about it is the setting of the text of Roethke's poem "The Rose", a description of a mystical experience of the integration of memory, present experience and maybe the whole universe. Bolcom's music is an extension of the poem, much more than just a setting. ...

Fine recording
Dorati + Swan Lake = magic (even in mono on Mercury with Minneapolis). Slatkin + Swan Lake = fine performance. But the orchestral playing is the real star here, leaving many a recorded version, including Dorati (and esp. Abravanel's) totally in the dust. I can listen to this just to wallow in the string tone. I wish Slatkin had brought just a tiny bit more to the score; then this would be a ...
