A terrific compilation
The idea of a greatest hits album for a classical composer is nearly an absurdity, but the selections for this package are almost perfect. The signature magic sound of Ormandy and his great Philly Orchestra open with Symphony 4 movement 1.Ormandy and crew reappear later with the war march from Athalie-a true crowd pleaser. Not to be missed is the On wings of song piece sung by Elly Ameling in all ...

Serenading the Soul
I used to work nightcrew in a grocery store. We weren't allowed to wear headphones. They said it was for "safety reasons" but I think it was because we wouldn't be able to hear the subliminal messages that they probably were piping in through the intercom system. "You like working in a dead end job..." "You enjoy selling your soul for peanuts..." "You will put up with all kinds of ...

An Inexpensive Gem
I find that often Mozart's most profoundly beautiful music occurs in the slow movements, particularly in the slow movements of the concertos. This is a fine selection of slower movements. The overall quality of the performances is exceptional. This relatively inexpensive gem always satisfies. It is an excellent gift.

Mastery and joy
Because they lasted such a long time and toward the end didn't play at their best, I found reasons to overlook the Madeus Qt. But in this 9-CD set of the complete chamber music of Brahms, there are some sublime performances--I would especially point to both String Sextets, for example. In every instance the style of the Amadeus is full of vibrancy and joy, and their ensemble isn't baased on ...

So beautiful, musical, and superior to Karajan's DG Mozart Symphonies.
Herbert von Karajan's early 1970s EMI recording of Mozart's oft recorded concertos for Clarinet, Oboe, and Bassoon is one of his better Mozart recordings. The Berlin Philharmonic play like angels, and their musical sense, at non rushed, but never too slow tempos, is very effective and beautiful. Mozart's music is well served, and the clarinet, oboe, and bassoon soloists are all 100% first ...

A PLETHORA OF POULENC
This is by far the most scintillating compilation of Poulenc chamber works before the public today, offering a repertoire of compositions spanning the composer's career, and performed by artists of consummate sensibility, elan and charm. Poulenc [1899-1963], whose chamber music can be variable, is ardently championed here in pieces that are, for the most part, his most popular, with the ...

Good budget set.
Having spent additional time with this set, I'm updating my review. I'd say I've listened to about half of it. Orchestral music: The symphonies are okay, although there's better performances out there. The Double Concerto isn't bad... but the rest of them are uneven, especially the Violin Concerto, with sluggish playing. I'll be supplementing the concerti with other recordings. The smaller ...

A Priceless, Classic Set
Simply put, there is a ton of music here -- 88 CDs comprising the complete EMI orchestral recordings of Herbert von Karajan -- all in a box smaller than a pair of shoes. It will take me the better part of the rest of this year to listen to it all, but as I have already heard 3/4 of this music, I'll start with the things that have never appeared previously on CD, or have just been impossible for ...

this really works
I brought this CD set about 2 years ago. Originally it was to help me to get better sleep after a stressful at work. It works so well that I rearly hear the last few pieces on the CD. Last year, my mother was diagnosed and treated for cancer. She had trouble sleeping due to the mental stress and side-effects of the chemo. I recommanded to listen to the CD set. She loved it. Now the CD set is ...

Enjoyable!
I have listened to these recordings. With only a few exceptions, these recordings are good to very good in terms of interpretation and sound quality. This set has a lot to offer at a reasonable price!

Excellence in Performance and Recording Quality
Even for those who are not professed fans of Lieder, this is a must-have release. Kathleen Battle gives a fine performance, justifying her reputation as one of the great sopranos of recent times. James Levine, ever the consummate accompanist, provides a wonderfully well matched performance, and never lets his ego overpower Ms. Battle. Technically, this is a recording to die for. The quality of ...

Perfection.
I don't know what the "deal" is with the guy who reviewed this piece before me, but clearly he has some issues. German clarinettists do not use vibrato. If you don't like it, don't listen to them. Leister's tone is like a laser beam, always perfectly in tune. The interpretation is gorgeous throughout. The facility with which the difficult passages are handled is unreal. He manages to make ...

Excellent compliation
Unlike some classical cds, this one contains full length selections, covering a wide range of composers from Bach to a couple of tastefully done popular selections. The recordings were full and expressive, the audio quality excellent. In a sense it is a varation on the 'greatest hits' theme with pieces like Faure's "Pavane," but it does contain some nice surprises, such as Shostakovitch's "Jazz ...

Go no further than this loving compilation
I have many editions in the Philips Complete Mozart Edition ("one-stop shopping" is my middle name) and I recommend them thoroughly and emphatically. Life is too short not to listen to Mozart each and every day of your life. Thanks to those at Philips who put this monster together; we really appreciate it. So does Wolfie. Essential.

I love this CD!
I have been searching for a CD to accompany my balloon mime show for a long time, and when I found this, it was a dream come true. The songs are happy sounding, chirpy and fun, especially the souped up version of the PowerHouse. Comes with a burp in front that I could react to! If you like happy sounding instrumental music, this would be it!

The "Unknown" Beethoven...
I think it would not be wrong to say that most casual listeners of classical music know Beethoven mostly by his orchestral works--the symphonies, piano concertos, violin concerto, and overtures. Those who go a little deeper might know him by the piano sonatas, violin sonatas, and string quartets; however, this misses a significant portion of his oeuvre--and a major facet of his ethos and art: ...
