Better than the best.....
I sit here at my computer and try to think of superlatives adequate to accurately describe this album....and there just aren't any. It is worthy to be the best selling classical album of all time....but it's more than that. It's just a must have, a collection to soothe the savage breast. For those times when I have lost hope, when I am past care.....I will sit with closed eyes and listen to this. ...

Bernstein Favorites review - great!
My children and I really enjoy this CD. It has lots of useful information about instruments of the orchestra. The children love the Peter and the Wolf story the most, but the individual instruments section is very interesting for them (and adults) as well!

Opera's Most Heavenly Moments Indeed
I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a ...

Still One Of The Top Readings of "The Rite of Spring"
Leonard Bernstein turns an absolutely scorching reading of "The Rite of Spring" in this recording for Sony. What this reading manages to do is leave the listener on the edge of his/her chair anticipating the next phrase. It's savage, it's brutal, it's completely raw, this is where Bernstein excelled in my opinion. This is "The Rite.." with a kind of high-octane engine. The London Symphony ...

Rhapsody in blue
I first heard Leonard Bernstein's version of Rahpsody in Blue in the early 1960s, on a 7" vinyl record. It has remained my favourite ever since. This digital issue on a CD is excellent. Nothing has been lost in the transition from analogue to digital recording, and it is every bit as enjoyable now as it was when I first heard it forty-five years ago.

El Salon Mexico - Copland
I bought this CD --- expressly for this piece of music by Aaron Copland. While it isn't as bold, with the beautiful piano renditions, which are found on the soundtrack of the movie "Fiesta", Bernstein manages to capture the spirit, and intent of the piece. It's wonderful listening.

Comparing Bernstein's three Mahler Ninths
Since all three of Bernstein's Mahler Ninths have been reviewed on Amazon as the "best," I thought I'd sit down and compare them side by side. The two commercially recorded versions are with the New York Phil. from 1965 (Sony) and a live Concertgebouw concert from 1985 (DG). There is another live concert with the Berlin Phil. on DG from 1979 that derives from a radio broadcast. As other reviewers ...

Required Listening
I grew up on Mahler's first with Bernstein and the Concertgebouw which is a great performance. It was also one of the first CD's that I bought ever. Only now (after many many years) did I get this performance with the NYP. While the "style" is perhaps the same as the Concertgebouw, there is a certain amount of freshness and uncontrolled power that makes this performance uplifting and ...

Wonderful collection of Aaron Copland Hits!
Wonderful collection of Aaron Copland Hits! If a classical genius ever had a hit....like Britany. Luckily for us though. No Britany, Aaron yes! Very well done passages, Fanfare for the Common this NYS composers signature and a piece that has stuck with me since my college radio days 35 years ago! Eugene Ormandy, Leonard Bernstein and Louis Lane conducting these masterpieces, I had to have three ...

Bernstein is strongest is Symphonies 1,4,5,and 6
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) recorded all 6 Tchaikovsky Symphonies with the New York Philharmonic for Columbia records-now Sony Classical - in the 1960s and early 1970s. Bernstein later re-recorded Symphonies 4,5,and 6 with the New York Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. In this box then are Bernstein's only recordings of Tchaikovsky's first 3 symphonies. Symphony 1 in G Minor, "Winter ...

An Excellent Exploration of Beethoven by Bernstein and the VPO
I have been listening to Beethoven's music for many years, and have recordings of Beethoven by von Karajan, Abbado, Rattle, Kleiber, Bernstein and Levine to name a few. I also had the opportunity to see Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic perform the Eroica symphony live several years ago in Orange County, California. Needless to say that was the definitive performance for me. I only ...

Splendid! The 1983 production, with modern technology.
This is a 2009 release of a 1983 telecast. As such, the video and audio quality is astonishingly good. Please note: some other reviews refer to an earlier release - there's nothing wrong with the sound on this one - DTS 5.1 is perfectly acceptable; one might say excellent. It's like a visit to the Eighties, in a time machine. There are some superb performances on this disk. Watching a very ...

this one will surprise you!
I'll keep it simple: this album is a collection of classical music belonging to a category commonly referred to as the fanfare. Several pieces were written by the conductor, John Williams, who is famous for movie themes like Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Memoirs of a Geisha, and many others. It is majestic, inspiring, and beautiful. I have shared it with several friends and ...

A classic account of titanic choral music
Recorded during a 1978 concert in Amsterdam and released worldwide a year later, Bernstein's last recording of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is emblematic of the conductor's final period when he re-recorded core repertoire incluidng Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler with European forces in the final decade or so of his life. This was the first really exceptional recording of the score I ...

a box of love letters
I consider this the best single Mahler collection available, because it is rehearsed and conducted by Leonard Bernstein, whose life and passion brought about a worldwide appreciation for Mahler's music. Bernstein appeared transfixed or transported to another world when he was conducting Mahler. He told orchestras that Mahler left the best blueprint--extremely detailed scores--so that all a ...

Late, great Bernstein
This was one of Leonard Bernstein's last recordings, and turns out to be one of his most memorable ones as well. Copland's Third Symphony uses his "Fanfare for the Common Man" as its climax, and Bernstein mines every bit of emotion you might expect. I'm not completely convinced that the symphony is necessarily one of the composer's tightest works, but Bernstein makes every minute sound ...

What can I say other than this is a great CD. Beethoven was a master and his music will live forever. Altough I don't like every single symphony he composed, I love all the pieces on this album. These selections have "fire and passion," and I listen to them over and over again. Enjoy!!

Schumann for poets
There is more in Bernstein's performances of Schumann's concerti than one could ever expect, given the myriad recordings of these remarkable works from a master of the ethos of the Romantic era. Bernstein's recordings are romantic, emotional, nuanced, precise, and really in the groove. In the LP era, I had recordings of these works by Bernstein that I loved. These are even better. The Vienna ...
