George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, ...

Spicy and Sweet!
One can't help but be impressed with the agility in Bartoli's voice. Vocal fireworks! And yet the "Mentre io godo...", "Caldo sangue" and "Lascia la spina..." are so sweet and calming. I consider this CD a must have!

Natalie Dessay - Greatest Moments on Stage15 reviews
Natalie Dessay, Laurent Naouri

Virgin Classics, 2007

Opera at its very best!
This cd demonstrates the tremendous range that she can display, and its very likely we've not even seen the best of Natalie Dessay as yet! She just gets better and better, and this cd verifies this fact. Its been worth the wait of my near-80 years to hear and see a talent like this. She is a surperb artist, and a rarity.

Offenbach - Orphée aux Enfers / Dessay, Naouri, Fouchécourt, Beuron, Podles, Petibon, Smith, Gens, Cole, ...13 reviews
Jacques Offenbach, Marc Minkowski, ...

EMI Classics, 2002

Should be illegal - way too much fun
This CD should be illegal - everyone from the singers to the musicians obviously had way too much fun - and so will you! Natalie Dessay shines as Eurydice and Laurent Naouri is a delightful (if rather roving) Jupiter, while Yann Beuron makes Orphee come alive. Ewa Podles gives Public Opinion exactly the right amount of santimonious self-rightousness. A truly delightful recording - even if you ...

The Baroque Christmas Album1 review
Johann Sebastian Bach, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, ...

Archiv Produktion, 2005

5-PLUS Stars
There are not many things in life that I would describe as just Gorgeous -- but this album is definitely one of them. The selections, the arrangements, the production quality, all are clean, yet lush -- simultaneously light and rich. The effect is wonderful. This may not appeal to hardest-core periodists, but for beautiful music lovingly performed, the album is very hard to beat. Not only ...

Offenbach - La Belle Helene / Minkowski, Lott, Beuron, Senechal, Naouri, Le Roux, Torodovitch, Chatelet Opera16 reviews
Felicity Lott, Yann Beuron

Kultur Video, 2004

Delightful Belle Helene
Certainly the best Helene I've seen on DVD with almost perfect sound, this production lives up to this style of social satire of upper crust Belle Epoque French society, where an enraged husband's wrath upon finding his wife in bed with a lover is actually taken to task by everyone else for not properly warning her that he was coming home, and therefore the blame for the scandal is entirely his! ...

Minkowski's (overdue) return to Handel
I'll admit that I am a big fan of Marc Minkowski and that I've followed him from his first Handel recordings (Amadigi and Teseo) to his Offenbach and Strauss. However, while his "modern" forays have been quite nice (especially the Orphée aux Enfers), I'm glad that he has finally remembered what he does best: the Baroque, and, namely, Handel. His Dixit Dominus has converted several people I know ...

Warner Classics UK, 2009

SHOULD BEAUTY INDULGE HERSELF?
This is a very important reissue, and I want to recommend it strongly despite a certain reservation (which I shall explain and which you may not even agree with) that stops me from awarding all 5 stars. It combines on 6 very well filled cd's three earlier releases that presumably did not fly off the shelves, so here they are going for - not exactly a song, but you know what I mean. The two ...

...spoilt for choice!
This review is a bit of an addendum to the one I wrote about the McGegan Ariodante. How lucky we are to have both his and Minkowski's superb recordings, so different yet both alive with vocal and dramatic excitement. I've mentioned that I choose McGegan over Minkowski and it is for a number of reasons. That said, I feel that both are really excellent and either is a good choice. My main ...

Handel - Hercules, Musical Drama in Three Acts (HWV 60)4 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Marc Minkowski, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2002

Magnificent, Riveting Version of a Handel Masterpiece
Like "Semele," "Hercules" (1744) is a secular English-language drama drawn from classical mythology, composed at a time when Handel had turned from Italian opera to English oratorio. Though presented without scenery, costumes or stage action, this "Musical Drama" to a text by the Rev. Thomas Broughton (after Ovid, Sophocles & Seneca) is a stageworthy tragedy of love & jealousy -- Handel's ...

Simply the Best Night at the Opera4 reviews

Erato, 1999

"Simply a Stunner"
Ideal for an opera lover, or for anyone who loves gorgeous singing. I am an opera nut and was introduced to this one by accident; "Au gond du temple saint" from Pearl Fishers (selection #6, disc one) was playing on the stereo in the Metropolitan Opera giftshop when I walked in at intermission one night. I thought it was so stunning I bought my first copy of the CD then and there; and have ...

Love it!
Love it, love it, love it. Have not stopped playing it since it arrived and haven't gotten sick of it yet either. I bought it because I heard just one track briefly on the radio - bit of a gamble but it paid off. Great to drive to! Love the fast violin playing and the french horns. Rameau was one cool dude. Can't wait to share it with my dad. Am even wondering if I could wire the garage ...

Offenbach Romantique2 reviews
Jacques Offenbach, Marc Minkowski, ...

Archiv Produktion, 2007

Offenbach the romantic...is a lot of fun!
This delightful CD captures the charm, wit and romance of French composer Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) who, as a cellist, sometimes played with Liszt. He wrote the "Concerto Militaire" to exploit his virtuosity. Among the first composers of operetta and one of Europe's more influential 19th century romantics, Offenbach is best known for his fantastic opera "The Tales of Hoffmann", his most ...

Bach: Mass in B Minor3 reviews
J.S. Bach

Naive, 2009

Fresh, Exciting, OVPP
It seems as though Joshua Rifkin's theory that Bach performed his choral works with one voice per part (OVPP) has been cemented in standard repertoire. This release is likely to be ranked among historically informed, though not OVPP, recordings generally regarded as gold standards: Gardiner and Herreweghe. What sets this set apart from the rest is not simply it's use of OVPP (indeed, it's ...

Magdalena Kozená ~ Handel Italian Cantatas / Les Musiciens du Louvre, Minkowski8 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Marc Minkowski, ...

Archiv Prod Import, 2000

People I cannot stress too many times...
... the importance of making sure the CD you review matches the one you are listening to. The one in question is by MAGDALENA KOZENA and Marc Minkowski. It will win all the usual awards from Gramophone, BBC Music, Fanfare, etc. and it will of course deserve them. It is not as great as Janet Baker's Lucrezia, nor is Renee Fleming Lotte Lehmann or Roberto Alagna Leopold Simoneau. The best modern ...

An outstanding production of a deligthful opera-bouffe. I showed it to a bunch of opera fans and everybody raved about it. Fabulous entertainment for very little cost! Don't miss it!

Offenbach - La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein2 reviews
Jacques Offenbach, Marc Minkowski, ...

Virgin Classics, 2005

It's truly about time!!!
It's about time a new professional recording was made of this masterpiece! I have the Plasoon/Mesple recording which is fantastic but this Minkowski/Lott edition trumps it for many reasons. To start it's directed by Marc Minkowski, who's delightful 'Le Belle Helene' and 'Orphee aux Enfers' continue to be the most played of my Offenbach library for he truly understands how the music should be ...

Gluck's Armide
To modern music lovers, Gluck is best-known for his Orpheus and Euridice and, to a lesser extent, for Alceste. But he was also the composer of other operas which deserve to be remembered. Among these operas is Armide, which Gluck composed in 1777 for the Paris Opera. (By that time, he had revised his earlier versions of Orpheus and Alceste for staging in Paris.) In setting Armide, Gluck took ...

Archiv Produktion, 2005

RAMEAU - MINKOWSKI & Les Musiciens du Louvre: sur le Ouvre posthume
Before Rameau (1683-1764) there was instrumentation; after Rameau, there was orchestration. Then came Mozart, Beethoven, von Weber, Berlioz, Fry, Lizts, Gottschalk, Wagner, Lèfébure-Wélly, Franck, Bruckner, Mahler, and the rest is part of the world's music history. In the beginning, Rameau was an expert organist intensely interested with the exploration of new instrumental possibilities in ...

The Baroque opera you must have - if you're serious about Baroque opera!
I bought this recording of Hippolyte et Aricie some years ago now and it has never failed to capture my imagination with its powerful and daring music. The cast of this recording is superb, particularly Fouchécourt and Gens, and Marc Minkowski's Les Musicians du Louvre are in top form here in this live recording. Hippolyte et Aricie contains a wealth of music, ideas, tunes and styles. André ...
