Ravel: Boléro14 reviews
Maurice Ravel, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 1999

Simply wonderful!
If you are a music buff like myself ( and I do like all kinds of music ), than what's not to like about The Boléro, by Ravel? And I don't buy into that hog-wash of a story that Ravel wrote this piece in the beginning of dementia...gimmie a break and give that man credit where credit is due.....The Boléro is a master piece! Ok...my review: It was a pleasure to shop for this Cd on Amazon ( ...

Debussy's Greatest Hits13 reviews
Claude Debussy, Andrew Litton, ...

Sony, 1994

Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!
Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple. Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain ...

Andre Rieu

Denon Records, 2004

There's Beauty in Music
I had seen Andre Rieu on YouTube, and fell in love with his music! Since I am 76 years old and crippled by Arthritis, it is not easy for me to go out and shop, so I turned to Amazon. If you're a classical music fan, listen to Andre Rieu, who orchestrates classical as well as show tunes and religious music! In addition, he has a chorus and pyrotechnics to set the mood. I could listen to his ...

Great for Preschool Children
I use this CD with my preschool music group. The kids love it! This CD enables children learn about classical music without over extending their attention spans.

Virgin Classics, 2008

Keep your eyes and ears on these guys!
What a wonderful CD! The sheer musicality of these guys is amazing. The sounds blend so smoothly that the pieces reveal their organic quality from the first notes. When will they record Mozart next? Performers of the first rank.

Lucia Micarelli, Eric Holden, ...

Reprise Records, 2004

Loosh
I dearly love this album. There were places that nearly brought tears to my eyes. Lucia said in an interview, "I play violin!" and that is a complete understatement. She is the instrument when she plays. I love it and her.

The Collection 2: The Concerto Recordings2 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2009

Essential Argerich recordings, despite the duplications
Imitating the format of DG's earlier collection of Argerich's complete solo albums, here in crhonological order from 1967 to 2004 we get her concerto recordings. All are self-recommending to her legion of fans and highly recommended by critics, which poses a problem for many collectors. I already own all but a handful, so even DG's bargain price isn't all that tempting. The duplications consist ...

Most Relaxing Classical Music. II
Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music47 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Samuel Barber, ...

Compendia, 1994

This box selection is enjoyable
Cheers to those with drive to attain "real" music student status. However, I just want to listen to music passages I have found enjoyable over the years. There is no pretense of this selection being a student workbook of classical music for the serious scholar - it is just an enjoyable alternative to that shared by those offensively loud vehicles near me at the stoplight.

The Most Relaxing Harp Album in the World... Ever!5 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Angel Records, 2005

Harp Music
Animal behaviorists have done some studies showing harp music is good at calming animals, especially cats. My cat was very skittish and unhappy as a result of very loud construction work next door and all other efforts to calm her down had not been totally successful. I got this and she (and I, if you must know) relaxed immediately. It is a beautiful sounding album. (And the bahaviorists have a ...

Romances for Saxophone18 reviews
Michel Colombier, Claude Debussy, ...

Sony, 1990

Incredibly Musical Peformance
In my opinion, this is one of the best Classical CDs ever produced. I listen to it often and I am amazed at what an incredibly MUSICAL performance Branford Marsalis had. If you like saxaphone, I think you will love it. If you don't, I think you will still find it valuable because the technique, the phrasing are quintissential.

Prokofiev, Ravel: Piano Concertos, etc / Martha Argerich27 reviews
Sergey Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1996

The young Argerich--fresh and completely without affectation
The few complainers about this famous recording have slipped far down the list here at Amazon, and what's striking is that the things the detractors hate about Argerich (mannered phrasing, overly aggressive attack, rushing, banging) are the very things we don't get here. Argerich can adopt a reckless, hectoring style, but at her best--as here--she's full of imagination, wit, and an uncanny ...

Debussy, Ravel: Streichquartette8 reviews
David Finckel, Claude Debussy, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1995

The Cream of a Very Good Crop !
For me, these readings by the Emerson Quartet constitute one of the finest available couplings of these two staples of the string quartet repertoire. Listening to other highly touted versions by the Julliard, Guarneri, Tokyo, Cleveland and Kodaly Quartets, I feel the Guarneri (on the Surroundedby Entertainment 1004 label) seems to enjoy the richest and best recorded sound, and I would place their ...

Jewish Cello Masterpieces10 reviews
Ernest Bloch, Max Bruch, ...

Leggiero Records, 2002

Encore! Encore!
Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really ...

The Best of Classical3 reviews

AAO MUSIC, 2002

A Very Good (and cheap!) Box Set For Beginners.
This is a great box set for beginners (especially considering the price). The sound quality is excellent (unlike many other [inexpensive] classical CDs). Also, a wide variety of classical favorites are covered in this set. It could use some notes about each piece in the CD booklet though.
