Finally found it!
Years ago I got hold of several of the "Hooked on the Classics" and have enjoyed them very much. (They are great background music for doing housework) I have been searching for copies on CD for a long time. Thanks for tracking them down for me. I shall keep looking for "Hooked on Classics #2 and "Hooked on Swing" as well.

I have really enjoyed listening to these CDs with words to Classical Music. Being a trained classical musician this is such a fun way to teach Classics to the younger generation. Keep it up!!!

Don't let the low price fool you!
This CD is magnificent, especially for people just getting into opera. I've never really been interested in opera before, but I've recently started listening to it and wanted a CD of my own to listen to. When I bought this, I was a little wary of the low price, and I wondered what the quality would be (mostly quality of the content). Let me tell you, it is magnificent! There are so many ...

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

The title says it all.
I bought this CD set for my fiance who requested a "greatest hits" of classical music. He was able to recognize 90% of the pieces, and has listened to the CDs several times in the past month. I am a great fan of classical music, so I was able to recognize that many of the pieces were not performed by top-rate musicians or orchestras, but my fiance didn't notice. He simply wanted an ...

Excellent! The better of two versions by Karajan.
First off, this version of The Planets is sonically superior to the other release that contains The Enigma Variations by Elgar. Secondly, I also think this performance and interpretation is much superior to Karajans 1981 release of The Planets with the Berlin Philharmonic almost 20 years later. So if you are a Karajan fan, you might want to opt for this disc. If you don't have this one, but have ...

Great Sampler!
This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus." There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide ...

Must Have
When I was a child in the late 50's and 60's, the evening meal was eaten at the dining table, with the whole family gathered together. We always had music playing ... usually Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. This great collection of Arthur Fiedler's works includes many of Fiedler's favorites, but also many of my family's favorites, too. I have my entire CD collection in ITunes, ...

A harrowing and shocking musical journey
If Richard Strauss's Salomé was a horrid tale of insanity and (peripherally) necrophilia created through unbridled lust and jealousy, Elektra is a grisly story of madness sparked by cold, dissonant revenge. Both of the operas, composed within a few years of each other, retain similar musical formulas: both take a Freudian plunge into the deepest, unknowable crevices of the human psyche with ...

The greatest recording of Zarathustra ?
Karajan and his beloved Berlin Philharmonic have been accused of "over indulgency" (for example, in the complete recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies, also available on Deutsche Gramaphon). However, the same cannot be said for this recording. Lustrous strings, powerful brass and clear and concise woodwinds, all combined under the virtuosity of probably, at the time, the world's greatest ...

Which Salome is the best on records?
Salome is a treacherous opera to cast, since the ideal soprano needs a voice of Wagnerian power coupled with an ability to sound sensuous and young. By common agreement the ideal portrayal came from Ljuba Welitsch, but her prime lasted little more than a decade in the late Forties and early Fifties; sadly, her legendary portrayal was never captured in the studio. Off and on I've owned all the ...

Bad times for the world, but good times for the admirers of Jacqueline Du Pré
These are bad times for the world at large - as I write, the US financial system is threatening a giant systemic collapse, the US are mired in Irak and Afghanistan, with Russia occupying half of Georgia a new Cold War is looming large, Chinese babies are dying by the hundreds from poisoned milk, Iran and Korea won't be stopped from becoming nuke, and Paris Hilton is off her medication again - but ...

Summer for ANY Season!
I am NOT a fan of classical music. That single fact makes this extremely positive review perhaps even more impressive. Put simply, this CD offers vocal versions of several classical classics and movie scores as well. Summer is not an established "star" name in the music business but, one listen to some of the samples of songs like Nella Fantasia or Cavatina will convince you of the merits of ...

3rd expanded edition has a lot to offer to people wanting to learn about classical music
The 2-CD set included in the new 3rd expanded edition of this release has a track listing different than what you see on this page. Click on the "back cover" picture, and it will show that the tracks (on this edition) are listed alphabetically, by composer. Of course, it's impossible to sum up the best classical works ever written on only 2 CDs, and the selections will always be debatable. But ...

I think that this is really one of the best values you're going to find anywhere in the world of classical music, especially for beginners.
