Great for kids!
I'm generally not a fan of music "samplers," but opera can be tough to introduce to children. And hey--even adults played cards, ate, and talked through the recitative sections of the early operas while they waited for the next aria! So I feel that getting kids hooked on opera through great arias probably can't hurt (the next 10 years or so will determine whether I'm right or not). My 4-year-old ...

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

Great Tracks -- Great Value -- Great Book, Who Can Complain?
Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z ...

An awesome musical experience
I believe that Luciano far exceeded Caruso. His voice reached out to everyone, except for that unfortunate foray into the "Georgio" film. He presented his music with a marvelous flair for detail. We shall miss him, so much.

Colbran the Muse - DiDonato the Goddess!
Fierce is just about the only word I can come up with so bowled over have I been by listening to this new disc from Madama DiDonato. It opens like gangbusters with the spectacular rondo "D'amore al dolce impero" from Armida - a very impressive way to open this recital, every minute of which is thrillingly AND gorgeously sung. DiDonato hurls her voice through coloratura that will practically ...

The best gift ever.
I purchased this CD as a birthday gift for my sister. Because I personally know nothing about opera, I didn't know how to buy a single opera for her, or even which one she would like if I did know how to get it. So I settled on this "sampler" style Cd, and she just loved it. This is the best of the best of all opera arias and performances. My sister plays it all the time, and I think it is ...

Incredible!
I couldn't believe reading all the negative reviews about this album that I had to say something. I was first introduced by a friend and I was hypotized by her beautiful voice. About the songs in this album, they are simply incredible. Nice to put on when you're in the mood for some good music like house cleaning, etc. By the way, did I mention this album comes with a CD and DVD. I ...

Positively Magnificant
Just purchased the CD today and absolutely love it. Not so sure about the "Jingle Bells" , but The Lord's Prayer is BREATHTAKING and brought me to tears. Andrea is I believe the most gifted tenor of today and I look forward to hearing more from him and seeing him again in concert. Bravo Andrea!

A spiritual experience
The DVD is the full 77 minute concert with two featurettes previously released alone. The CD is the full 72 minute concert previously released alone, except that two bonus tracks have been added. Fun, accessible opera for you and your child to enjoy
I bought this CD for my then 3 year old son. He loved it then because it was the "Bugs Bunny" music he was familiar with from the cartoons. He listened to it for awhile then we put it away. After he turned 4, he said to me one day -- let's listen to opera, and now we listen to this CD every day. This music gets his blood going; he struts around his room when he listens to this. And, he is ...

You can't go wrong with Janos Starker
This is a good collection that spans a wide variety of styles and eras. Many contain pieces most cellists should know, but I hadn't yet heard. Musically, I have no complaint, but the packaging looks like it was put together in a hurry. The back of mine said "Guitar Essentials". No worries, I won't be listening to the packaging. A good value.

Unforgettable Concert
Do not hesitate to buy this DVD. It is worth every dollar. The four singers really stand out, Netrebko with her angel-like voice, Vargas with a wonderful tenor voice, Garanca as a colorful mezzo and Tezier as a brilliant baritone. Each and every aria are outstandingly sung and when the four of them join to sing both an aria from Rigoletto and from Traviata their voices blend wonderfully. It is ...

Great Pavarotti sampler collection
I got this CD for my teenaged son, who asked for a Pavarotti CD for Christmas. I chose this one among the plethora of recordings because it is a good sampler of the great man's best pieces. My son isn't much into operatic singing, but he loves Pavarotti. I wanted a recording that would "hit the high points" without being too exhaustive for someone who's not deeply interested. This recording has a ...

This box selection is enjoyable
Cheers to those with drive to attain "real" music student status. However, I just want to listen to music passages I have found enjoyable over the years. There is no pretense of this selection being a student workbook of classical music for the serious scholar - it is just an enjoyable alternative to that shared by those offensively loud vehicles near me at the stoplight.

Great for the amateur Opera listener
As a long time armchair Opera listener I'm shocked that I hadn't come across this album until recently. I'm not really an Opera connoisseur so my review is based on just the fact that I love Opera, but mostly by listening to arias or occasionally going to the Opera. This CD is quite comprehensive and offers a broad spectrum of aria's and some chorus's from several composers as well as the more ...
