Chopin: Greatest Hits8 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Eugene Ormandy, ...

Sony, 1994

Wonderful
If you love Chopin you will love this CD. I played Chopin music as a child and had an old 78 record of Chopin music but of course times change and for some reason I never bought a CD of Chopin music until I saw this one. It is very wonderful and has all the songs I love best.

The Chopin Collection [Box Set]32 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Artur Rubinstein

RCA Victor Europe, 1991

Great music and performance
Disclaimer: I am neither a musician, music student nor some classical music know-it-all (some). I am simply somebody who enjoys what sound good to my ears. Pheeww..... Now to the product; As with my other reviews on music I will attempt not to compare this CD set (of 11) to anything. All said, I found the performance to be of great quality and I suppose so was the composition. I'm way too new ...

Collection 1: The Solo Piano Recordings (Box)10 reviews
Martha Argerich

MINISTRY OF SOUND US, 2008

A Fabulous Deal!!!
Recently I checked Amazon's price for this set in Great Britain at Amazon UK and in Germany. In Britain this set now puts you back, when the Pounds are converted to dollars, a hefty 70 plus dollars, considerably more than twice the US price! In Germany at Amazon Germany the set runs @50 Euros, more than 71 dollars! So for about the one gazillionth time - it pays to shop around! Even within Amazon ...

The World's Favorite Piano Music21 reviews
Van Cliburn

RCA, 1992

Classical Favorites From A True Virtuoso of Piano
Van Cliburn is my Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms all rolled into one virtuoso of piano. I've seen one of his live concerts and collected some of his remarkable recordings enough to truly attest that he can expressively play rich and varied masterpieces of the greatest and most brilliant, pianistic composers from Baroque to ...

Chopin: Favorite Piano Works14 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Vladimir Ashkenazy

Decca, 1996

Why are you waiting?
Ashkenazy is one of the titans of Chopin. Davidovich and Arrau are the other two. They're all you need. Get Davidovich for the concertos, (inlcuding the Krakowiak--Op 14), Arrau for the nocturnes and a few miscellaneous pieces. Ashkenazy handles everything else. (Btw, Ashkenazy vs. Davidovich re. the impromptus is a toss up. But since the impromptus aren't on this disc, you can make that ...

Chopin: The Complete Nocturnes And Impromptus49 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Claudio Arrau

Philips, 1997

Great
The CD arrived in perfect condition, and I am really enjoying it. Claudio Arrau is definitely one of the best piano players of Chopin.

Mozart: Sonata for 2 Pianos in D Major, K. 448; Schubert: Fantasia for Piano, 4 Hands in F Minor, D 94010 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz [Vienna] Schubert, ...

Sony, 2003

Outstanding Piano Duo Program
Repertoire for piano duo (four-hands) and two pianos may seem ephemeral; it is surprisingly rare in the concert hall, despite the quality of the music written for this medium by its greatest exponents (Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Rachmaninoff). The superb compilation on this CD (taken from two previous issues) could well stand as an introduction to this repertoire for neophytes, since it includes ...

Mozart: Piano Sonatas [Box Set]17 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christoph Eschenbach

Deutsche Grammophon, 1999

Beautiful but not Serious
Mozart's piano sonatas are like listening to ice cream. They are just music. And I mean this in the most positive sense. Mozart's good artistic taste manifests itself in being profoundly unpretentious and self-effacing. As Raymond Chandler said, "There is no great and important art; there is only art... and precious little of that." Mozart's music is inconsequential as music so rarely is. ...

Story Of Chopin In Words And Music3 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Ingrid Haebler

Vox (Classical), 1995

BEAUTIFUL MUSIC/WAY TO LEARN ABOUT CHOPIN & HISTORY
The music is so wonderful, perhaps a better description is that the music is so beautiful that it almost seems surreal - Wow! So breathtaking, so Chopin!!! Add to the music, a great written biography on Chopin's life and you've got one incredible hour of enjoyment/learning. The first 1/2 hour mixes Chopin's story with his music; the second 1/2 hour is some of Chopin's greatest works! Great for ...

Go For Baroque! - The Canadian Brass5 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, John Stanley, ...

RCA, 2010

You can't go wrong with the Canadian Brass
You really can't go wrong with any CD by the Canadian Brass; they're such an outstanding group. Because of this, it can oftentimes be difficult to choose which of their CDs to purchase. However, if you are looking for a Canadian Brass CD focused around the more classical aspect of music, "Go For Boroque!" is an excellent choice. Compared to the other CB baroque CD, I feel this one is the ...

Brahms: Works for Solo Piano17 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Julius Katchen

Decca, 1997

A wonderful offering.
There may be the individual recording made by others - Gilels, Rubinstein, Arrau - of a particular piece which might be preferred but as a collection of the Brahms piano works, this set has to take the prize. The quality of original recording is high and the digital transfer seemingly well done. One has to listen very attentively to detect which of the four Ballades were recorded monaurally; a ...

Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon [Box Set]5 reviews
Ferruccio Busoni, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2003

Horowitz: A Digital Legacy
This set includes all of the recordings Vladimir Horowitz did for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, including his historical concert in Moscow. While the context of his return in Moscow is moving, the studio recordings are simply wonderful. The sound quality is impeccable. The Steinway piano sounds warm but yet crisp and sharp. Horowitz still has plenty of power, and if you don't have a good ...

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Bruce Abel, ...

Note that a new edition of this box will be released by Brilliant around September 2010. Along with a DVD of videos, there will quite a few new performances.

Schumann: Kinderszenen Op15, Kreisleriana, Arabesque, Toccata5 reviews
Robert Schumann, Vladimir Horowitz

Sony, 1990

The Definitive Kreislerianna
Everything on this disc is what you'd expect from one of the greatest pianists of all time: superb. But the treasure is the Kreislerianna, of which this is the definitive recording. I've searched in vain for a more recent, sonically better version. There is, for example, a decent recording of the piece by Perahia, a mediocre one by Brendel, and an awful one by Argerich (arghhh!), but nothing ...

Mozart: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]17 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Mitsuko Uchida

Philips, 2003

Excellent Mozart playing
Opinion is divided here about this set, and I'd like to weigh in heavily on the favourable side. I love Uchida's Mozart sonatas. She is to me, with the possible exception of Murray Perahia, the greatest Mozart pianist of our age. Some people have found Uchida's playing lacking in emotion, but this is music from the Classical era, between the contrapuntal complexities of the Baroque and the ...

Classical Kids: Collection9 reviews
Various Artists

Children's Group, 1995

It all started with Beethoven
Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great ...

The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli33 reviews
Giovanni Gabrieli, Girolamo Frescobaldi, ...

Sony, 1996

"A Sound Spectacular!"
To quote the cover of the CD booklet accompanying this incredible recording, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli is "a sound spectacular" indeed! I was first exposed to Giovanni Gabrieli when the orchestra I play in (as a clarinetist) performed his Canzon a 12, complete with brass both on stage and in the auxiliary. Sitting in the middle of the sound was a truly memorable experience and a ...

The Story Of Handel5 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Dieter Kober, ...

Vox (Classical), 1995

we love the whole series
The whole Vox Music Masters series has been a treat from age 4 on. The stories are child-oriented, but not sugary sweet (divorce and insanity both mentioned if it is appropriate for that composer). The short clips one review complained of caught the ear of my son, and he'll even pick out the tunes if he hears them as musak in a department store.

Mozart: Concertos for Two and Three Pianos10 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, English Chamber Orchestra, ...

Sony, 1991

Another great performance
Fabulous music performed by fabulous musicians. Mozart is one of my favorite composers. His music is genius. And Muray Perahia and Radu Lupu are two of the greatest pianists of our time.
