Gustav Mahler: Complete Edition

Great set, Great price
I guess you could say this was a best buy for someone who was looking for a complete Mahler box set. Yes, it even has the piano quartet and the Drei Pintos(Weber) overture. All of these recordings have been issued before, but this is a pretty commendable collection. At under $4 a disc it is quite a good value. Some of the performances could be said to be "best choices"; Bernstein's Vienna 5th, ...

Fine performances
Some collections of this type -- a composer's complete works -- are pieced together from here and there, old sources and new, and the resulting collection can be uneven. This set brings together many complete cycles of Mozart's works from individual artists and groups. For example, the fine Hungarian pianist Klárá Würtz performs all the sonatas here in recordings originally issued as a ...

A set to return to and live with
There is a difference between seeking out outstanding versions of individual symphonies and finding a set to live with, and while there are undoubtedly performances of single symphonies here which could compete with the best, it is as a coherent and aesthetically consistent survey that Cluytens' accounts are best considered. There is a rightness to his judgement which proves enormously satisfying ...

Great album and DVD
This is a superbly made DVD. The interview chapters weren't my favorite; however, the music videos were great. The music is mostly Cameron's own transcriptions/arrangements of orchestra favorites and a few organ standards played on a Wurlitzer. It's highly enjoyable and recommended. The CD is very good as well...though I would suggest mainly buying this for the DVD.

Memories of the Swag
We listened to the melancholy and wistful Songs from a Secret Garden when at the Swag B&B in North Carolina just before 9/11, when we were enjoying a welcome break from caring for a loved one. We were so enthralled by its ethereal sounds, that we bought a copy. When the CD was later misplaced by a relative, we went searching for it, without benefit of remembering the title. With the help of the ...

Yes, it's bombastic ...
As some have noted, Beethoven's Last Night is bombastic. But, you could say that for Beethoven too. Overall, the guys from Savatage and the orchestra have done an exceptional job. This is an exemplary case of synergy between classical and progressive metal, each adding to the other's strengths and creating something that is greater than the sum of the parts.

The Desert Island Set Of All Desert Island Sets
There may be a way of enhancing your life better than by spending $30 on this magical set, but I don't know what it is. If you want to take your life out of the mundane, just place any of the first ten discs of this collection in your player and settle back to be transported to a higher realm of being. Rubinstein's playing transcends playing - the sense that the music is playing itself rather ...

A Fabulous Deal!!!
Recently I checked Amazon's price for this set in Great Britain at Amazon UK and in Germany. In Britain this set now puts you back, when the Pounds are converted to dollars, a hefty 70 plus dollars, considerably more than twice the US price! In Germany at Amazon Germany the set runs @50 Euros, more than 71 dollars! So for about the one gazillionth time - it pays to shop around! Even within Amazon ...

great Beethoven apart from the Ninth
This Abbado/Beethoven cycle has been repackaged and is available at a bargain price. I would snap it up as it is generally a superb set. Symphonies 1-8 were filmed at live concerts in Rome. Abbado has a scaled down orchestra and these performances are lithe and vigorous. I cannot think of any of the eight that are not excellent interpretations. My surprize was the Seventh, the work I heard last. ...

My Favorite Recordings of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas
Over time, my favorites change, but I can honestly say that Kempff's Beethoven Piano Sonatas have continued to give great pleasure. The recording quality is fine. The acoustic is very good. His playing is gentle and even a bit whimsical at times. I never get the sense that he has to impress anyone. His playing does not have all of the sturm and drang that you can sometimes expect with mature ...

Even the teenagers were captivated!
When I was young, I watched Victor Borge with my parents whenever he came on a PBS special. With this set, I can share the laughter with my own kids, and my wife who had never seen him before. Borge has successfully crossed to another generation! So far we've only watched 2 of the DVDs, and they were great. Another review mentioned that there is a lot of duplication. I haven't seen any ...

Radu Lupu's Mood Indigo
Purchasers of Decca's 2005 Radu Lupu Edition -- three budget-priced collections devoted to Schubert, Beethoven, and Brahms -- may be hesitant to buy the new "complete Decca solo recordings" box set. The earlier sets are worth hanging onto for Lupu's complete Beethoven piano concertos with Mehta and the Israel PO; the Brahms D minor concerto with Edo de Waart and the London Philharmonic; and ...

One of the best renditions, ever!
I've noticed that some folks are a tad critical of the treatment, fidelity, balance, pacing, etc. of this performance, not considering when this recording was made. And, perhaps, not recognizing why it was made in the first place. It reminds me of my reaction to a recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" that I caught mid-stream in the car on WRR radio in Dallas. It thought it was the ...

FIVE FOR THE CONTENT / 0 FOR THE "BOX"
I can't add to David Cahill's comments on the value and the music. He's also right about the period and the performances. I've listened to Fretwork since the 1980s, always impressed with their touch and ability. For those of you who do appreciate this period -- with its dense harmonies, drone-like calms and timbral intricacies -- you might also look into Fretwork's take on more contemporary ...

Notes about this release
The merits of John Eliot Gardiner's Bach have been debated for decades now, so I feel no need to re-litigate the past. The purpose of this review is merely to describe the packaging. This 22 disc box set includes all of Gardiner's DG/Archiv Bach recordings, as well as a single disc he made for Philips that includes the "Magnificat." The groupings and track orders are identical to the CDs ...

Review
I watched Wagner's opera Der Ring des Nibelungen twenty years ago when it was first televised by the Metropolitan Opera and was enthralled by the production. I was equally excited by the fact that it was still available as a DVD. This DVD package met all my expectation in quality of product and the quick service in getting it to my home was equally appreciated. Thanks so very much!
