Mysteries Beyond: Songs and Chants in Praise of Mary1 review
Anton Bruckner, Pablo Casals, ...

Delos Records, 1994

The Best Professional Choral Group in the US
This recording reatures many of the "modern" classical sacred choral works(excluding the {Palestrina and Victoria works). From the heavenly Bruckner to the sublime Durufle, each song is sung with particular care. Gounod's Ave Maria for female voices is perfectly stunning and Shubert's Die Allmact for male voices is potently powerful. Vinson Cole's performance of Shubert's Ave Maria is ...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I ...

Kiri Te Kanawa Sings Verdi and Puccini Arias3 reviews
Siegmund Nimsgern, Maurice Durufle, ...

Sony, 2005

Greatly improved sound
The original CD release of this collection of Verdi & Puccini arias was a major disappointment. On the CBS label, the sound levels were extremely low, and the depth of the sound field extremely limited. Recorded at a time when Te Kanawa's voice was at it's most glorious, and popularised by the use of two of the Puccini arias in the Merchant Ivory film "Room with a View" (Chi il bel sogno di ...

Gregorian Chant, William Byrd, ...

American Gramaphone, 1990

Light and shadows
Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is ...

Poulenc: Concerto champêtre; Concerto for two pianos; Organ Concerto1 review
Francis Poulenc, Georges Prêtre, ...

EMI Classics, 2003

Magnificent Authorative Recordings
I had the original LPs of these recording so I was happy to see that they had been transferred to CD. The performances of these three concertos by Francis Poulenc are the best I have heard. The Concert champetre (1929) was written for Wanda Landowska and was a favorite piece of hers but she never recorded it despite the urgings of Poulenc. This recording of the Concert champetre was made in ...

Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

The Power & The Majesty: Essential Choral Classics5 reviews
Robert Shaw Festival Singers, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Choruses

Telarc, 1995

Best of American Choral Singing!
This CD could be the cornerstone of your choral music library! Wonderful performances of all of the essential choral pieces give a wonderful introduction to choral music for someone new to it, and also give a nice sampler of the best pieces for someone already familiar with the music. Listening to each excerpt may inspire you to purchase the entire work! As you would expect of performances by ...

Gloria: Music of Praise & Inspiration3 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Telarc, 1998

Glorious
If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's ...

Faure Requiem Op.48 / Durufle Requiem Op.925 reviews
Robert Shaw, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

Telarc, 1990

French Choral Classics
This disk has set the standard for performing the settings of the Requiem mass by two great French masters, Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle. The Faure setting is an intimate one with occasional moments of tempestuousness. This particular recording features the more heavily orchestrated edition (for an excellent chamber version see the Cambridge Singers under John Rutter). Put in seven parts, ...

Divine Beauty And Peace!
I am the producer of this CD as well as "SACRED TREASURES:Choral Masterworks From Russia", "SACRED TREASURES III:Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond", "SACRED TREASURES V: From a Russian Cathedral" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. My other SACRED ...

Duruflé: Requiem Op.9/Messe Cum Jubilo,Op.119 reviews
Maurice Duruflé, Dennis Keene, ...

Delos Records, 1995

Etherial Bliss!
This recording of Durufle's masterpiece is hands down the best currently available. Written in the 20th century, Durufle can be considered the heir to Faure in a succession of French composers, however adds unique harmonies to medival plainchant melodies. The sound quality is supurb and the Voices of Ascention choir led by Dennis Keene sing with such a pure laser like focused sound reminescent of ...

John Shirley-Quirk, Daniel Sladden, ...

EMI Classics, 2005

I love it and I give it as a gift
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by ...

The Very Best of Janet Baker4 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, ...

EMI Classics, 2002

A Rare & Glorious Singer
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from ...

Hymn for the World 2 / Bartoli, Bocelli, Terfel, Chung9 reviews
Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1998

Knocked My Socks Off!
As a choral singer, I am familiar with most of these works, but this recording knocked my socks off when I heard excerpts from it on a local classical music radio station. Not only does this CD group together some of the best music anywhere, but the performances are fantastic. The choral group has a remarkable precision and clarity in their sound that is admirable. And wonderful soloists. In ...

Durufle: Requiem Op. 9; Quatre Motets; Messe 'Cum Jubilo'; Prelude & Fuge2 reviews
Maurice Durufle

Apex, 2006

At last, Durufle's own interpretation is again available
This is the recording I grew up with, but it has been out of print for years. I tried to track down the master recording, which had been sold & sold again, as record companies morphed & coalesced, & pleaded to have it reissued in cd format, but had finally despaired, until I found this reissue on the UK site. This version of Durufle's Requiem still sets the standard. There have been many ...

Maurice Duruflé: Requiem; Quatre Motets7 reviews
Maurice Durufle, Matthew Best, ...

Hyperion UK, 1992

This CD is no Joke!
I have to say. I'm 22 years old and I've owned this cd for about 2 in a half years. This is still by far the most special and the most touching CD I have ever owned and listened to. A few nights ago, I listened to it and by the time it was at the end of the Agnus Dei, I was just in tears. Its a very personal and intimate experience. Just make sure you have a quality system so you can listen out ...

Mass: The Most Powerful, Uplifting & Passionate Music You Will Ever Hear7 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Warner Classics UK, 2001

A beautiful variety
This has got 2 be 1 of my fav. cd's of all time. The variety & arrangment seems 2 be very well planned. While all of the songs are very beautiful & breathtaking, my 2 favs are the Requiem for My Friend by Preisner & the Dies Irae immediately following it. If you ever run across the Preisner Requiem I would highly recommend that you buy it b/c it is soooo expressive & emotional.

Durufle: Requiem, Mass-Con Jubilo, Motets / Plasson, von Otter7 reviews
Maurice Duruflé, Michel Plasson, ...

EMI Classics, 2000

Such a Beautiful Requiem
If you're a fan of requiems (especially the ones made by Brahms, Faure, and Berlioz) then you'll love this one by Maurice Durufle. It sounds so angelic and passionate. Michel Plasson's superb handling of the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Orfeon Donostiarra gives makes this piece of work shine with full fervor and magnificence. The vocal soloists, von Otter and Hampson, never miss a ...

Organ Music From France-The Art Of Virgil Fox, Volume III3 reviews
Leon Boellmann, Marcel Dupre, ...

Angel Records, 1997

Organ Music from France
This may be the only recording of the Durufle Suite No 5 for organ available. I've had the original vinyl since I started organ and I've still never tired of listening to it. It's very dazzling stuff, yet incredibly beastly to play. This is GREAT organ music. The Durufle performance alone is worth the price of the CD.
