Beethoven: Favourite Piano Sonatas13 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Alfred Brendel

Philips, 1994

Astonishing Clarity
I recently heard Brendel's 70s recordings of the "famous" Beethoven sonatas first time in quite a few years (I heard them before). Initially, I was not moved. It sounded like he was just playing the notes. As I listened more attentively, however, I started to get impressed. Clarity is the key word here - the clarity of playing and intention. No detail is too small to Brendel. Every marking by the ...

Debussy: Clair de Lune and other Piano Favourites1 review
Claude Debussy, Josef Klicka, ...

Nimbus Records, 1994

Debussy isn't all sleepy classical elevator music.
Martin Jones executes a technical tour de force in this sampler of music from the Debussy piano repertoire. The selections are a mix of lively and placid pieces (proving that Debussy isn't all sleepy classical elevator music.) The selections include not only the famous "Claire de Lune" (Moonlight), but also the magnificent "La Cathedrale Engloutie" (The Sunken Cathedral), and the ...

Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy-My Favourite Opera For Children4 reviews
Robert Massard, Sherrill Milnes, ...

Decca, 1994

Fun, accessible opera for you and your child to enjoy
I bought this CD for my then 3 year old son. He loved it then because it was the "Bugs Bunny" music he was familiar with from the cartoons. He listened to it for awhile then we put it away. After he turned 4, he said to me one day -- let's listen to opera, and now we listen to this CD every day. This music gets his blood going; he struts around his room when he listens to this. And, he is ...

Liszt: Favourite Piano Works9 reviews
Franz Liszt, Jorge Bolet

Decca, 1995

Don't downrate a CD because of a missing piece - please!
This is an excellent representative 2-CD bargin set of Liszt's piano works played by a recognized expert pianist in this repertoire. The other reviewers (i.e. those w/ 5* ratings) have made their points well. What continues to bother me in many of these classical CD reviews is 'downgrading' a CD by several stars, if not more in some cases, because the listener is irked at the lack of a feature ...

Collection of Favourite Christmas Carols13 reviews
Lewis Ross

Revere Records, 1982

An Island of Sanity in a Crazy Holiday World
I've been listening to this album since my mother got it on cassette. There's a follow-up Christmas album, too-- I think it's called Songs, Hymns, and Carols. This is a must-have album. I mean, when people hear it for the first time, they say, "I must have this album." Musically, it is a pleasure to listen to the excellent playing. But the mood is the real draw. This is the most mellow, ...

Bach: 6 Favourite Cantatas (BWV 147, 80, 140, 8, 51, 78) /Bach Ensemble * Rifkin18 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Joshua Rifkin, ...

Decca, 1997

Buy this CD
An extremely high quality CD recording. The Duets are splendid. Wann kommst du, mein heil will bring you to tears and Wir eilen mit schwachen is charming. Jesu Joy of Man's desiring is perfect. This is great music done in the best spirit. I really think this is one of those milestone recordings for this music. Something like Kind of Blue is to Jazz.

Favourite Welsh Choirs2 reviews
George Bennard, Harry, ...

EMI Gold Imports, 2000

Great choirs reaching to the ceiling
I have been some of the churches in Wales where the voices of the choirs and organ rang throught the rafters and ceiling of the church, this collection brought back old memories of those majesties versus some Donnie and Marie type strumming on a guitar and selling their own CDs.

Favourite Cello Concertos17 reviews
Edward Elgar, Luigi Boccherini, ...

EMI Classics, 1990

Wonderful Collection
This is a wonderful collection of Jacqueline du Pre's work, both because it traces her development as an artist, her unique interaction with various conductors and her interpretations of a variety of composers. Jacueline du Pre is a cellist for all time.

Debussy: Clair de lune & Other Piano Favourites14 reviews
Claude Debussy, Francois-Joël Thiollier

Naxos, 2004

A sound that quenches the thirst of the soul!
I have played the Debussy: Clair de lune & Other Piano Favorites so much, that I can pick out any Debussy from a variety of music. It is great to listen to when I am reading, studying, or even cleaning house. The music is so relaxing and serene. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Beethoven: Favourite Piano Sonatas / Vladimir Ashkenazy19 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Vladimir Ashkenazy

Decca, 1997

Nothing I have heard comes close to these!
It is simply that something in me was listening for something else through all the other pianists I heard over the years when they played Beethoven. What I heard was this man or that playing Beethoven. What I wanted to hear was Beethoven. When I heard Ashkenazy's Moonlight Sonata, there it was! The pulse- the sound of Beethoven's heartbeat- I don't know how to say it...I immediately bought the ...

Favourite Spanish Encores1 review
Isaac Albeniz, Mateo Albeniz, ...

Decca, 2001

Superb performances, superb sound quality
This is a wonderful CD! De Larrocha delivers some great performances of many well-known Spanish favourites, some of which you may recognise more by the sound than the title. The solo piano pieces include Albeniz' Sevilla:sevillanas, which I am sure you will recognise, his Tango and a popular Malagueña. Granados' Spanish Dance No 5 [sometimes known by other titles] is sensitively performed. ...

Italian Baroque Favourites2 reviews
Tomaso Albinoni, Arcangelo Corelli, ...

Naxos, 1996

This is the best compilation of baroque music ever assembled
When I first got this CD I didn't know very much about Italian baroque music. However, after listening to this CD, I discovered composers that I had not heard of before, that as it turns out are as talented as Vivaldi. For example, the Sinfonia by Sammartini is just spectacular. The music by Geminiani is fantastic, as is the music by Locatelli and Manfredini. Also, I have listened to a lot of ...

Favourite Harp Concertos1 review
Francois-Adrien Boieldieu, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, ...

Philips, 1998

An outstanding survey of recordings for harp and orchestra.
There's nothing quite like classical music to soothe the stress of the afternoon commute (especially on Greater Boston's Rt. 128 or your local equivalent). Harp music, in particular, has an extraordinarily calming effect. I'm not exactly sure why that is (darnit Jim, I'm an engineer not a behavioral psychologist) but I can personally vouch for the results. This two-disc set contains some of ...

Abide with Me and Other Favourite Hymns2 reviews
Anonymous, John Darwall, ...

Naxos, 2005

Wonderful Hymns
This is a compilation of the most wonderful traditional hymns you can find sung by the Castle of Windsor choir in England. It creates a very spiritual ambience in your home when played and it's appropriate for times of prayer. Most of the hymns can be found in a hymnal named "Hymns Ancient and Modern", in the "English Hymnal", "The Hymnal 1940" and "The Hymnal 1982". The ancient hymn "Abide with ...

Mantovani's Christmas Favourites2 reviews
The Mantovani Orchestra

Polygram Records, 1990

Mantovani's Christmas Favorite
This album (and CD) has been a family favorite/tradition since I was a kid. My dad would play the album every Christmas and it now brings good Christmas memories for my grown children. In fact, both of my grown daughters were asking for this CD to play for their families but they cannot locate. I used to wake the family to "Christmas Bells" every Sat. and Sunday before Christmas. Even though it ...

Swedish Orchestral Favourites2 reviews
Hugo Alfven, Lars-Erik Larsson, ...

Naxos, 1995

One of the gems of Naxos catalog
This disc was a bestseller in Sweden and really should be one here too. The music itself is undemanding and light but sincere and tuneful. It will not impress you with epic grandor but will surely make you feel a lot better at the end of bad day. The performance is also idiomatic and distinguished. The sound is warm and spacious.

Colonial America6 reviews
Hesperus Early/Traditional Music Ensemble

Maggie's Music, 2003

Fantastic!
I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina. It was an incredible journey from the ...

Orchestral Favourites2 reviews
Leroy Anderson, Richard Hayman & His Symphony Orchestra

Naxos American, 2002

a treasury of days gone by
For any baby boomers growing up in the late 1940's - 50's this is the sound that evokes the mood of those by-gone days. Your radio was filled with these wonderful melodies. A time recreated with this cd music by the great Leroy Anderson. Wonderful. Be happy again!

The Harmonious Blacksmith: Favourite Harpischord Pieces2 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude-Beninge Balbastre, ...

Polygram Records, 1990

Pinnock cracker
This is still one of the finest harpsichord recordings you can buy as an introduction to the harpsichord. In 1984 this was one of the first recordings that was released on cd instead vinyl (perhaps that was the reason it was recorded all the way in Japan?). Great instrument (David Way 1983 after Hemsch), wonderful player and a repertoire that is broad and very representative for the very best ...

Russian Favourites17 reviews
Vasily Agapkin, Aleksandr [Tenor Vocal] Aleksandrovich, ...

Naxos, 1996

Fantastic
This is one of the best Red Army Choir cd's around. The variety of songs is excellent and epic. The sound recording on this disc is better than any of the other ten albums of theirs that I have. For the love of Bog in his high heaven, buy it.
