A Dream come true
I've been waiting for this to arrive on DVD having fallen in love with it on LaserDisk. And it has been worth the wait. Britten is up to the task of turning Shakespeare into opera. He devises a different sound for each of the three forces - the fairies, the mortals and the rustics. The casting is ideal with a young Cotrubas as Titania outstanding. Bernard Haitink keeps everything moving. And ...

Marriage of Figaro
Even after many years, this production, with the marvelous Kiri Te Kanawa as the Countess, is still the best Marriage of Figaro production I have ever seen. Frederica von Stade is outstanding as Cherubino, and Benjamin Luxon is a wonderful Count. I initially didn't care much for Ileana Cotrubas as Susanna, but after repeated viewings I have come to appreciate how sublimely she performs. Knut ...

A Must
This is a recording anybody who likes Gershwin's Porgy And Bess could not do without. It is the only full original recording of the opera as far as I know, and in my opinion the musical performance and the acting are both really outstanding. I'm happy that I've found this DVD - 100 % recommended!

FEEL LIKE LAUGHING? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!
Puccini's Gianni Schicchi (pronounced Skee-kee) is not only one of the funniest operas ever composed, it is one of the best COMEDIES ever staged, whether of an operatic nature or otherwise! Although it should be noted that the libretto, by Giovacchino Forzano, is based on an episode in Dante's Inferno, it cannot be denied that Puccini supplies a great deal of the hilarity through his astute ...

Pavarotti always the best.....
This Debut recording gives us an early insight into the beautiful voice we would be listening to for many years to come. His voice even this early is beautiful, precise, and just thrills you. Even in 1964 we knew he was a God given vocal gift to us. Wonderful release....sooo happy I own it now.

A Revelation
I won't add much to the accolades that are already available, but I will say that David McVicar's production repays close attention: not only is it entertaining and fun (always, I think, tastefully so), but it's clear from the performance that his rehearsal process allowed these fine singers to inhabit their roles better than many opera productions I've seen. After almost 4 hours, I found myself ...

I'd give it a 10 if i could!
This production is hands-down the best I have seen. All of the principal performers were truly excellent. The sound, lighting and sets were fabulous on the blue-ray disk. Thomas Allen and Pamela Armstrong were hilarious throughout. The role of Prince Orlofsky was performed with absolutely amazing virtuosity by Malena Ernman, while Lyubov Petrova was bubbly as the maid. The nuanced gestures and ...

Superlative production
This is one of the most dramatically gripping operas on DVD that I have ever seen. The production from Glyndebourne is conceived to convey the intense drama of this tragic love story visally and musically. The unit set is unusual, a concentric crescent that changes appearance radically with lighting. The effect is highly dramatic. The singers are superb. Nina Stemme is a fierce, angry Isolde ...

An essential addition to any opera-lover's library
Other reviewers have pointed out some obvious weaknesses in this production: rather strange sets, odd use of "highlights" and dimming, and occasional uneven sound quality. But I soon forgot these in the sheer delight of watching a masterful presentation of one of my favorite operas. While all the principals are good, Gerald Finley is an especially memorable Figaro, and Alison Hagley is, quite ...

As Silly as Opera Gets!
All the more reason to enjoy it! Goofy as the story seems, and gaudy as the costumes are, the music is profoundly crafted and polished in tehniques of composition, and the singing on this disk is superb. Other tha Mozart, no composer of comic opera comes close to Rossini's brilliance in combining sophisticated music with witty fluff on stage.

GEM OF A PERFORMANCE
This is a performance of Albert Herring in the opera house for which it was conceived. That first performance was nearly sixty years ago now and, in the wrong production, Eric Crozier's comedy can feel a bit arch and dated these days, even if Britten's musical wit stands up a little better. Let's face it, Albert is a wimp and one night's binge drinking (pace Mr. Blair) ain't necessarily going ...

Les Deux Maurice ...
... Maurice Ravel and Maurice Sendak! A match made in Heaven, although I don't think they could ever have met, even in dream-time. "The Spanish Hour/Clock" was composed in 1907; "The Boy and the Enchantments" in 1924. But Sendak's stage designs and costumes suit Ravel's music perfectly, and Ravel's naughty boy is the meoldic prototype of the boy in Sendak's classic "Where the Wild Things Are." ...

An outstanding performance of a masterpiece
This is the only commercial DVD release of Berg's Lulu in complete 3 acts. I like the performance here. Christine Schäfer is a great champion of modern music and "Lulu of our time". Her performance is outstanding, both vocally and visually. Other singers are also quite good. Andrew Davis leads London Philharmonic in a performance which does Berg's masterwork justice by brining the intricate ...

Unbelievable
This is a jaw-dropping performance of the most influential of all operas, featuring Dame Janet Baker in her signature role. Besides everything else--flawless, relaxed technique, outstanding musicianship and insight--her mastery of cross-dressing-acting is unmatched. If there's a flaw, it's that there's too much blue in the setting. I started to think I was under water rather than underground.

A "Modern" Masterpiece
I was fully prepared not to like this recording of Poppea. For years I have enjoyed this masterwork in the radiant production of Nikolaus Harnoncourt done with Jean-Pierre Ponelle. I feared that this "modern" production would be an empty and horrendous mess as the director-driven "eurotrash" productions of most Handel operas and all Rameau works so far done as "modern". What a great surprise is ...

Hard to Imagine Anyone Would Be Disappointed
As other reviewers have pointed out, this production from 35 years ago is very well sung and acted. It is currently the most "standard" staging to be had of this opera on DVD and, thankfully for traditionalists, it's a good one. One aspect often overlooked in an opera DVD (or under-appreciated, especially when good) is the video direction, which is outstanding here in the hands of Dave Heather. ...

This Production Will Likely Never Be Bettered
This 1975 production from Glyndebourne is one of the most celebrated opera productions of the past thirty years. Primarily this is because of the absolutely fabulous design by David Hockney who took the engravings of Hogarth's series 'The Rake's Progress,' which had inspired the opera in the first place, and turned them into some of the cleverest sets and costumes ever seen. The designs mimic the ...

Ewing is amazing
I can only echo the praise for Maria Ewing...she is astonishing...as one reviewer said, not coquettish at all, but obviously a woman with a strong death wish...what an actress she is. I bought this DVD because I have her in Salome and the Coronation of Poppaea, in both of which she is amazing too. But this is the best...she's riveting. She's not really attractive at all...rather scary, in fact, ...
