Horowitz in Moscow: in words of an eyewitness
I decided to add my post and describe my impressions, since I was there at the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory and listened to Horowitz on April 20, 1986. I could not imagine that after some 20 years I would write these lines on the amazon.com. May I at once say that there has never been a cult of Horowitz in this country. Our own cult figures, Richter and Gilels, were very critical of him, ...

Horowitz: A Digital Legacy
This set includes all of the recordings Vladimir Horowitz did for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, including his historical concert in Moscow. While the context of his return in Moscow is moving, the studio recordings are simply wonderful. The sound quality is impeccable. The Steinway piano sounds warm but yet crisp and sharp. Horowitz still has plenty of power, and if you don't have a good ...

The Definitive Kreislerianna
Everything on this disc is what you'd expect from one of the greatest pianists of all time: superb. But the treasure is the Kreislerianna, of which this is the definitive recording. I've searched in vain for a more recent, sonically better version. There is, for example, a decent recording of the piece by Perahia, a mediocre one by Brendel, and an awful one by Argerich (arghhh!), but nothing ...

The Encore is more important than you might think!
These are famous Horowitz encores. They are not the titanic pieces he became famous or historically important for, but they are the pieces that made him popular with the public. Some are his own transcriptions, and every performance is his own. As one reviewer below said well, the encore was a special part of the recital that had its own demands and expectations. Having attended many recitals ...

A Giant at the Steinway
Horowitz In Moscow is a must see & hear DVD of Horowitz's return to Moscow at the age of 82 in 1986. This is after 61 years of self-imposed exile. He plays Mozart, Scriabin, et al on his truck-a-long Steinway grand piano. He is marvelous. As the photographer pans the audience during Schuman's Traumerei, a gentleman of indistinct years is shown in a stoic pose, with the exception of a tear ...

From Byronic to Orgiastic
Vladimir Horowitz was a champion of Scriabin's music long before it became fashionable, or even semi-fashionable. Scriabin's music appeared on Horowitz's programs as early as the 1920s. Horowitz's first issued Scriabin recordings were made at his 25th Anniversary Concert in 1953 (also his last public recital until his famous comeback in 1965). The B-flat minor, and C-sharp minor Etudes are ...

Horowitz near his prime
Vladimir Horowitz (who had a Polish grandmother and was fond of pointing out that he was "half as much a Pole as Chopin") devoted more recordings to the music of Chopin than that of any other composer. Horowitz considered the Mazurkas to be Chopin's greatest works, and often stated that there was more music in the shortest Chopin Mazurka than in the longest Mahler Symphony. The pianist ...

Awesome performance - should have left off the extra tracks
I bought this CD after watching Olga Kern perform several Scarlatti sonatas at a phenominal 3-standing-ovation concert. She hasn't recorded those sonatas yet, so this was the closest recording I could find. The performance and the recording are both exceptional. I sampled just about every other performance of Scarlatti I could find on-line before picking this CD and was not disappointed. It ...

Horowitz: The Last Recording
This album was the last ever made by this awesome legend of piano-playing. Recorded at his own home in six sessions over twelve days, it is stunning to realise that this performance comes from a man of 86 years of age. I thought I had heard just about everything he had ever recorded. This album includes music he had never before played publicly at least not in the USA - or recorded. Haydns ...

Artist's Perspective
I enjoyed the other pianist's comments of about fellow pianist's. Their detailed descriptions of playing styles are very interesting. Hoffman was great as was many others. This is the type of DVD that I enjoy watching over and over. The violin DVD is also very good.

Rachmaninoff's Two Great Interpreters in Collaboration
This RCA Red Seal release of Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto was recorded on the 50th anniversary of Russian Pianist Vladimir Horowitz' American debut. Though not preferred by most critics to his 1951 recording with Reiner and the RCA Symphony Orchestra, this is by far Horowitz' most polished, emotional and powerful performance - full of cantabile and warmth, yet never lacking in the pyrotechnics ...

mixed review
Two of the disk's main pieces are the first Ballade and the Polonaise-Fantasie. Somehow RCA believed his mannered London performances were the ones to reissue on this package. Too bad, as the other pieces are quite nice. Interestingly his Ballade #4 and Barcarolle are rather similar to his earlier mono RCA recordings (ironically). The Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise is an incredible ...

Mind-shatteringly superb
Volodos strikes us with some incredible works here, friends. These are quite simply some of the most perfectly executed works upon the piano I have heard, and this is no light affair considering the depression-inducing difficulty of some of these behemoths of the piano (Horowitz transcription of the Hungarian Rhapsody sounds like it requires a virtuoso of the highest order to play well.) We're ...

Great performances: One reservation
I agree with the very informative comments and opinions in the other review of this release. My copy, also poorly packaged, was without any background information about Horowitz or these or other potential performances in this series. There were no performance dates for either work - only a one-liner about private tapes recorded between 1945-51. Shame on BMG Sony marketing staffs for this ...

Horowitz conquers Berlin
Despite returning to studio recording in 1985, a number of Vladimir Horowitz's live recitals have been released over the last two decades: Two from Milan in 1985, Moscow (on both CD and video) and Leningrad from 1986, Vienna (on video) and Hamburg (his last recital) in 1987. This recital from 1986, Horowitz's first concert in Berlin (then known as West Berlin) since 1932, is in many ways the best ...

Horowitz the Classicist
For this installment of recordings from Vladimir Horowitz's Private Collection, the fifth in the series that started in the 1990s, Sony/BMG is focusing on repertoire from the Classical era. Again, the recordings are taken from Carnegie Hall recitals the pianist had recorded at his own expense. Horowitz first recorded Haydn's Sonata in E-flat (No. 52 or 62 depending on which listing you use) ...

A historical legacy!
Despite I am not a Horowitz admirer, it 's worthy to underline and emphasize the colossal pianism and thunderous fingering around every one of its different performances. The special distinction around this album is the fresh inspiration and notable musicality emanated in this Recital, that deserves to be catalogued as a cult recording among the impressive and even excellent live recordings ...

Best of Horowitz
Those of us who were fortunate to SEE as well as hear pianist Vladimir Horowitz perform in concert will long remember the quiet, nervous, and rather timid man who slowly walked on the stage. When I saw him at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland in 1978, he hadn't played on the West Coast in many years. Actually, Horowitz was absent from concert halls for years, only making recordings, either for ...

A Young Organist of Refreshingly Vital "Star Power" Makes His Appearance on Recordings!
The organ is such a refuge of the mediocre, the staid, the conformists among classical music's instrumentalists, that it is always a joy when an organist, such as the zesty young Cameron Carpenter, comes along who has -- ah, well, let's say it! -- real "pizazz", yea, verily even much showmanship! It is about time that an organist take up the mantle of the very much missed E. Power Biggs, who, ...

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like ...
