Fantastic 'Seasons'
This is a digital remastering of a stereo recording from 1973. Herbert von Karajan used two soloists from his 1960's recording of "Die Schopfung" ("The Creation"), Walter Berry and Gundula Janowitz. Both are superb--as is Werner Hollweg. This is a unique oratorio in that it is both secular and sacred with considerable (I'd estimate almost 50%) dialogue among the solosists. There is of ...

Good performance of Haydn
I have always loved Haydn's masses and chamber music, as an amateur performer, listener and student of composition. However, performances of his symphonies have frequently left me somewhat indifferent. Important works, yes, and individually some fine performances by various artists, but not in the same class for me as those of Mozart or Beethoven. I am a big fan of Baroque music and own ...

Right on Par with Karajan's Schöpfung (Creation)
Not too long after hearing Karajan's version of Die Schöpfung (The Creation), I got this recording of Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons) conducted by Karl Böhm. The chief competitor for The Seasons seems to be the Neville Marriner set. I have yet to hear the Marriner version, yet I have every confidence that the choral singing, orchestral playing, and acoustics are quite refined on that recording. I ...

Time and the Dancing Image
The metaphysics of music and dance are compared early on in Rafi Zabor's extraordinary jazz novel, The Bear Comes Home: A Novel: "I mean, dance is all right, even street dance. It's the poetry of the body, flesh aspiring to grace or inviting the spirit in to visit." Grace and spirit are manifest in dancer Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola's evocation of the creation of the world, form wrested from ...

Our Finest Living Conductor
Joseph Haydn lived too long and too well, for which his reputation has suffered. He can't compete as a romantic hero with Mozart, whose tragic early death amounted to apotheosis, or Beethoven, the Promethean rebel, also tragic because of his deafness. So Papa Haydn has been taken for a mere fashionable servant of patronage, however skillful, and his music performed accordingly. Not by everyone, ...

Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults
Now that Deutsche Grammophon is part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and ...

A wonderful and varied compilation of Sacred Choral Works
This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, ...

This is a glorious, rich reading of this master work. Beecham draws a beautiful choral sound from his group and the orchestra is vintage excellence. Well worth having!

Reissue of 1990 recording
I haven't heard Gardiner's version of the Seasons on Archiv (out of print) so can't compare. But this is as good as Gardiner's Creation. Kuijken's takes on oratorio material are always instrumentally a delight and this is no exception. Only black mark - no texts as usual with these Virgin 2-for-1 sets.

Haydn's "The Seasons" on Naxos
Haydn composed his oratorios "The Creation" and "The Seasons" late in life under the great influence of Handel following his trips to London in the 1790s. Haydn was at the height of his powers with his 104 symphonies already behind him. Last year Naxos released an outstanding version of "The Creation" with Andreas Sperring conducting the Capella Augustina. Naxos has followed-up this release ...

Franz Joseph Haydn discovered!
Not so familiar with the various editions of Franz Joseph Haydn's works, I can only say that this set has helped me discover his genius and charm. Hitherto, I had thought him to be something like a "precursor" of Mozart and van Beethoven. This is simply not true! F. J. Haydn has his own unique style, lively, surprising, ingenious, charming, never aggressive. History reports that F. J. Haydn was ...

Haydn in late Winter
Haydn's "The Seasons" is wonderful music. Composed towards the end of Haydn's long and illustrious musical life, Haydn didn't hesitate to utilize thematic material from other works of his (including from his surprise symphony). Haydn's choral music is lively and cheerful for the most part. One of the interesting aspects of Haydn is his ability to take the styles of the past and mold them ...
