A Review
I have never really been a fan of Traditional Irish Music and had never even HEARD of the Irish Tenors....That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the recording of "Live In Belfast" Instantly, I was hooked. I have become addicted to a lot of these songs. Especially the goofier ones they sing. like "Phil the Fluther" and "Courtin in the Kitchen" When Heritage was released I was ...

"Lord, How Come Me Here"
I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all. And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album! Alinde O'Malley

Miss Pavarotti
Composer Gaetano Donizetti knew used the formula of romance to the fullest. Never innovated, it was always the current rules of his time. His triumph is in the beautiful melodies, the music that pleases the ears. In working with the voice can express great ability in soils, sets and choirs. Walk safely through serious opera and shows skill with the comic. Lucia di Lammermoor, La Favorita, Don ...

MENDELSSOHN AND SHAKESPEARE WOULD LOVE THIS RENDITION, 'CAUSE OZAWA'S PERFORMANCE DESERVES RECOGNITION. Felix Mendelssohn(1809-1847) was brought up in an intellectual environment thoroughly immersed in Shakepeare. His Grandfather Moses Mendelssohn had made some translations that included an excellent version of Hamlet's "To be or not to be", and his son Abraham, in turn, introduced ...

This presentation by the Met is superb. The production from scenery to costumes to the marvelous cast and orchestra is enchanting. Even those who are not real opera lovers will enjoy this.

Splendid! The 1983 production, with modern technology.
This is a 2009 release of a 1983 telecast. As such, the video and audio quality is astonishingly good. Please note: some other reviews refer to an earlier release - there's nothing wrong with the sound on this one - DTS 5.1 is perfectly acceptable; one might say excellent. It's like a visit to the Eighties, in a time machine. There are some superb performances on this disk. Watching a very ...

Having experienced many different versions (conductor/singers/orchestra)of this piece, I can easily state this one is the best of all! Great conductor, orchestra, chorus and featured singers; the interpretation is incredibly sensitive to the moods of the composer. (I would have liked english subtitles, to avoid reference to the latin text, but this is a minor distraction.)

A beautiful video of a beautiful production!
I have been familiar with Herbert von Karajan and the singers on this DVD for a long time before finally seeing them in action, and I must say, not one of them failed to impress, and each one of them is just as amazing as I had always expected. This is absolutely one of the greatest productions of Don Giovanni, which just happens to be my favorite opera, in this whole world. Von Karajan seems ...

Heard this with NEW appreication.........
This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). ...

An impressive traditional production of La Rondine
There are currently four DVD versions for La Rondine. For my taste, this new one from Decca is the best. Martha Domingo presents the opera in a beautiful and effective traditional production. I really enjoyed Ainhoa Arteta performance as Magda. Hers two Act I arias are sung with beautiful pianissimi and finesse which expresses vulnerability. She is very moving in the finales of Act II and ...

Ethereal Ruffian?
Countertenor Andreas Scholl sings like an angel on this recording, more beautifully, I think, than I've ever heard him sing before. The tessitura suits his head voice perfectly, and the 'light' timbres of the accompanying instruments -- small lutes and harps, vielle, dulcimelos -- don't require him to force his voice beyond its loveliest dynamic range. Those accompanying instruments, all ...

A Terrible Beauty
Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the ...

One the greatest of all time.
There are times when you can't let something pass. I've heard this nonsense about how Bruno Walter "didn't understand Mahler." The fact that Walter knew Mahler well and worked with him gave him far better insight into the composer than those commenting almost a century after the fact. The poetry in this performance is there for those whose who are capable of hearing it. Stating that Ferrier was ...

Splendid 1987 New Year's Concert Performance From Karajan and Wiener Philharmoniker
In 1986 the Wiener Philharmoniker decided to invite annually a guest conductor to conduct its popular New Year's Day concerts, which still do garner interest from devout classical music fans around the globe. The first conductor so honored, Herbert von Karajan, made the concert his own memorial tribute to the Strauss family (Johann Strauss, Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss), emphasizing such ...

A Great Coloratura Soprano
Coloratura sopranos are a dying breed today. The era of Lily Pons and Beverly Sills is long gone and opera audiences favor a more "heavy" coloratura sound- or at least a full lyric one, such as the voice types of Kiri Te Kenawa, Carol Vanness and Renee Fleming. Kathleen Battle was in many ways an artist who payed homage to the coloratura queens of olden days. Only Natalie Dessay, of late, ...

a triumph
These four concerts, each on its own DVD, form a monument to the human spirit. It's a wonder that Carreras survived leukemia. (It killed my own father.) Just for him to walk on the stage is a triumph. That he could walk on the stage and sing as well as he does is a miracle. Concert 1: The first concert is a gala concert at the Arena in Verona to benefit the foundation Carreras established ...
