Instruments of the Orchestra8 reviews
Various Artists

Naxos, 2002

What a fabulous resource!
As a music educator, I've found the recorded excerpts to be wonderfully and logically organized and presented. I've always been an instrumental music teacher only, but find myself teaching general music classes this year, and absolutely love what I've used so far. The last disc alone shows the fascinating evolution of the modern orchestra. Every other track is narrative text, the script of ...

Khachaturian: Gayaneh & Spartacus Suites1 review
Aram Khachaturian, Yuri Temirkanov, ...

EMI Classics, 1990

Spartacus/Gayaneh
This is a very fine recording. The music is very exciting and the selections are paced very well. Mr. Aram Khachaturian is excelent at bringing the local curtural color into his compositions. In spite of Soviet restrictions on a composers "politicaly correctness" the genius shows through. If you like Prokofiev, you will find this one to be very much to your liking. Fiedler Greatest Hits5 reviews
Aram Khachaturian, Edward Elgar, ...

RCA, 1991

what a collaboration of musical excellence, oh what style!
I bought this CD a little over a year ago and it is still among my favorites. "Polvetsian Dances" is excellent no matter what your interests. The full version of "Pomp and Circumstance" as well as "The William Tell Overature" are wonderful; The "Procession of the Nobles" is victorious and galliant; the lyrical complexity of "Farandole" is haunting. This is a brilliant compilation of ...

David Oistrakh: The Complete EMI Recordings11 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Jean Sibelius, ...

EMI Classics, 2008

A great deal in this box
For those who do not have a problem with shelf space, or those who have not yet collected much of Oistrakh's EMI legacy, this box really is a great deal. David Oistrakh was inarguably one of the 20th century's supreme artists. He won several major competitions in his life time (though, perhaps more famously, he finished 2nd to Ginette Neveu in the Wieniawski competition of 1935). He worked ...

Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music47 reviews
Johann Pachelbel, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Compendia, 1994

The title says it all.
I bought this CD set for my fiance who requested a "greatest hits" of classical music. He was able to recognize 90% of the pieces, and has listened to the CDs several times in the past month. I am a great fan of classical music, so I was able to recognize that many of the pieces were not performed by top-rate musicians or orchestras, but my fiance didn't notice. He simply wanted an ...

20th Century Classics: Khachaturian - Piano Concerto
Aram Khachaturian, London Symphony Orchestra

EMI Classics, 2010

This exciting series of 2-CD sets from EMI Classics features music written in the 20th century, a period of enormous upheaval, both political and artistic. During these 100 years music went through an unprecedented period of revolution and transformation and the music in these sets illustrates how these changes manifested themselves in the musical landscape. This will be the fifth release in the 20th-Century Classics series from EMI ...

Aram Khachaturian, Dmitry Kabalevsky, ...

RCA, 1999

Four Enjoyable Performances
This CD has four pieces from four composers, all performed by Kiril Kondrashin and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. The opening brass fanfare of Tchaikovsky's Capriccio italien is precise and impressive, making it my favorite recording of this work. The performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol is as good as anyone else's, with a full sound. The real reason to have the disk ...

RCA, 2000

Wonderful!
This is a great CD. If you're a James Galway fan, this is a must have. He is, after all, THE GREATEST flutist in the world today. The CD is filled with some of the most beautiful (and relaxing) music ever written. Buy it. You will love it.

25 Thunderous Classics14 reviews
Richard [1] Strauss, Gustav Holst, ...

Vox (Classical), 2000

Excellent Compilation and Good Value
While 25 Thunderous Classics gives only a brief overview of various pieces of music one could consider 'thunderous,' it is an excellent value and introduction to the style of music. Many of the songs are instantly recognizable, and this is good for someone who may only dabble or be new to classical music. Really, I think the only downside is that it only plays the 'thunderous' part of the song ...

James Galway - Dances for Flute4 reviews
Benjamin Godard, Frederic Chopin, ...

RCA, 1993

Unusual but outstanding flute music
This is one of a number of cd's bought for my wife (an avid flute lover) which have turned out to be among my favorites. Galway plays with his normal crispness and energy, but here some unusual pieces one doesn't hear often. The two Khachaturian songs are haunting and the Belfast Hornpipe is so neat! We listen to this often with toetapping, sometimes dancing enjoyment.

Idiots Guide to Classical Music10 reviews
Idiot's Guide to Classical Mus

RCA, 1995

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!
Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music. If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put ...

Classical Child, 2000

Bed Time Favorite
My daughter has played this tape to fall asleep every night since she was 2. She is now 6. She was thrilled when we went to the Nutcracker and they were playing her "Go to Sleep" Music. I am buying it for my 1-year old niece.

Simply the Best Classical Anthems7 reviews
Giuseppe Verdi, Carl Orff, ...

Erato, 2000

Great Sampler!
This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus." There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide ...

Great Waltzes1 review
Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, Johann II [Junior] Strauss, ...

Naxos, 1995

super naxos collection well performed
Ever since I discovered Naxos about ten years ago I have gotten their catalog which list such collections which are usually sampled from other Naxos discs and sometimes newly performed. This is a combination of the two. Of course this contains Blue Danube and the waltz from symphonie fantasique but it also contains the skaters, over the waves and khachtaturian's waltz from masquerade which ...

25 Classical Dance Favorites6 reviews
Johann II [Junior] Strauss, Felix [1] Mendelssohn, ...

Vox (Classical), 1997

Wonderful selection, but not really dancing music
I agree that this is indeed absolutely beautiful light classical music. It is indeed a perfect beginning to a lifelong passion to have classical music playing in the background or to turn up the volume and immerse yourself in it. But it consists of mostly ballet music, several marches, polkas, an entrance of the gladiators, a gavotte and just to show that he can-can, a delightful little march ...

Rodgers: Slaughter on Tenth Avenue8 reviews
Richard Rodgers, Morton Gould, ...

RCA, 1997

It's a starry, moonlit night in 50's Manhattan....
...And this album is the perfect soundtrack to it. In this compilation are the creme de la creme of modern nocturnal classical pieces, with the exception of Khatchaturian's Sabre Dance. Here is the anthem of Manhattan itself, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" by Richard Rodgers, "Gavotte and Blues" by Morton Gould, "Fancy Free: Gallop, Danzon and Waltz" by Bernstein, "The Three Cornered Hat" By De ...

Romantic Adagios9 reviews
Samuel Barber, Jules Massenet, ...

Decca, 2000

Beautiful interpretations
I agree with a previous reviewer on the minor problem of variations in volume. Beyond that, I find every piece beautiful. This interpretation of Barber's Adagio is the most passionate I have ever heard. I also find the Faure selection very touching. I love the vocals. I recommend this set to anyone, if for no other reason than the Barber piece.

Decca, 2008

MacGibbon Sets Spartacus Free
When this disc arrived I saw Ross MacGibbon credited as the video producer, and cringed: Oh, no, not the man who demolished Swan Lake at the Mariinsky! My expectations rose a bit when I thought that Khachaturian's musical language and Grigorovich's dance language might lend itself to quick cutting better. It turns out that MacGibbon clearly knows and loves the Spartacus ballet, and respects ...
