A Renaissance Christmas / Cohen, Boston Camerata

Simply one of the best Christmas albums on the market.
There is nothing to criticize on this CD, along with its wonderful companions, Medeival Christmas and Baroque Christmas. The singing is absolutely masterful; the instrumentation is faithful to what would've been used during the time period for additional authenticity. The narration in the various accents, taken directly from the story of the nativity in the Bible, really strings the different ...

Argyablt the absolute best collection of its kind that I have ever heard!
John Rutter has always dominated the choral music field, mostly performances and recordings of his own compositions. Who knew that a colelction of early church music would be so captivating. The Cambrisge Singers are in fine voice as they navigate the performance practices of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. The new group that specializes in Early Music La Nuova Musica give ...

Teeming with classics
I purchased this for track #10, which I'd happened to hear on the radio...it stayed in my head until I tracked down the CD. I have a relatively basic working knowledge of classical music, so this long playing collection was an excellent and surprising introduction to several of Bach's diverse works...both well known and more obscure. Certainly a worthwhile addition to your classical collection.

Gorgeous choral voices surrounding you
I hesitated to buy this disc until a friend told me he knew one of the members of Chanticleer; then again I also had nothing like it in my collection. The sound is rich and resonant. You should know it is recorded realistically, in a variety of soundfields, i.e. sometimes there is a processional from front to rear, sometimes choruses on upper left/right, or from all around you, depending on the ...

A Christmas Tradition for the Ages: Leontyne Price & Xmas
This Christmas is THE Cd to own above all others, as most anyone who's heard it will tell you - critics worldwide included. Without a doubt, the singing of soprano Leontyne Price -"La Splendissima" - is incomparable here. There has never been a soprano with a timbre so incredibly distinctive & beautiful that also infuses her music with a rare humanity and humility. Every Christmas is ...

Why I Like Tthis CD
This is an excellent CD. I had an ulterior motive for ordering it, however. I sing in a local Choral Society and we are performing it this coming weekend. I wanted the CD to follow along at home and get my part down a little better. I do very much enjoy John Rutter's music and the Cambridge Singers are very good.

Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how ...

Breathtakingly beautiful!
Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful. We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico! It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

very pleased with Festive Baroque
For those of you who are fans of baroque music I highly recommend this CD. I like The Academy of Ancient Music and they have produced a fine CD here. The CD has 11 tracks by Schutz (with Umlaut over the U, which I do not have on my keyboard), two selections from Gabrieli, one from Usper, and one by Weckmann. The only error is a false play-time amount given to track 4. It is 9:32, not the 3:00 ...

Bach and Handel Treats
The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may ...

Monteverdi's stunning resume piece
What a job application. Looking for work around 1610, Claudio Monteverdi composed this massive work in hopes of Vatican employment. He even dedicated it to his anticipated future boss, Pope Paul V - kissing up has a long tradition in the Western world. Inexplicably, the Vatican wasn't moved. Instead, Monteverdi accepted the patronage of the Doge in Venice and became their Maestro di Capella in ...

Excellent!
We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and ...

Choral perfectionists.
This is an essential Christmas choral CD. The program itself is fabulous and unique, lacking the tacky "favorites" found on most recordings of this type. Entirely a cappella except for two Rutter arrangements with orchestra. Not a single track is lacking in depth and sincerity. Polyphony is one phenomenal choir. For its small size, it has truly unmatched sustaining power and control ...

The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud
In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John ...

Well-compiled and sung lesser-known works for the holidays.
This is a very well-conceived collection of mostly lesser-known choral gems for the holidays, combined with a few more famous selections. For years, Warland has championed the cause of otherwise obscure choral works, as well as choral composers whose works deserve a broader audience. The benefit to these composers, their works, and the discerning listener, is the consummate professionalism, ...

A most mystical masterpiece
Harold Bloom says reading is a private experience. That may be true when it comes to Arvo Pärt's music. For some, Arvo Pärt's "Te Deum" will be comforting, if perhaps haunting, background music on a Sunday morning while reflecting or a Friday evening while relaxing. But for a most mystical experience nothing can surpass the effect of listening to "Te Deum" while walking along the River Nidd on ...
