Encore! Encore!
Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really ...

Excellent Baroque Collection
As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude ...

This box selection is enjoyable
Cheers to those with drive to attain "real" music student status. However, I just want to listen to music passages I have found enjoyable over the years. There is no pretense of this selection being a student workbook of classical music for the serious scholar - it is just an enjoyable alternative to that shared by those offensively loud vehicles near me at the stoplight.

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

Heard this with NEW appreication.........
This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). ...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I ...

Essential recordings
Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

The Westminster Cathedral Choir is well-known for performing and recording masterworks of Spanish, Portuguese, and Mexican sacred polyphony. This CD includes works by four of the at least six major chapelmaster composers at Mexico City and Puebla from about 1575 to 1750: Hernando Franco, Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, Francisco Lopez Capillas and Antonio de Salazar.

Phenomenal Collection of Music
Pachelbel's Canon in D is always good but the rest of the tracks shine as well. This is a superb collection of classical music. If you're new to classical music and love strings, purchase this CD. You'll be glad that you did.

The Classical Christmas Album
This is THE Christmas CD for the holidays. It has all the beautiful Christmas songs you want. Kiri Te Kanawa's version of Schubert's Ave Maria will bring tears to your eyes, Gabriel Faure's performance of Pie Jesu from Requim is simply beautiful, and the English Concert Choir's performance of Handel's Hallelujah from Messiah will take your breath away. This is a great buy and will be treasured ...

Good Ballet survey - Fine Performances, good but limited selection
Decca's 35 CD survey of the world of ballet is a fine presentation of the major works of that genre. The set includes very good performances of the standard well-known works of Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Indeed, the Bychkov Nutcracker is hard to beat and not readily available in some parts of the globe. Other welcome performances include Dorati's Detroit S.O. Stravinsky ...

Andre Rieu and his JSO are a class act. The music is wonderful, can make you smile and can keep you spellbound all at the same time. He loves his audiances and they love him and his orchestra. YOu can't go wrong with any of his musical CD's.

A Wonderful Collection
This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

A ceremony in sound
This is a beautifully performed CD of ceremonial music of the Christian tradition. While organist Michael Murray talks about the diversity of kinds of ceremonial music in the liner notes essay, the musical selection here is drawn from the Western Christian tradition with few exceptions. Sometimes the music did not start out as ceremonial in nature - Murray points out that the 'Incidental ...

You take what you've got...
A Swedish proverb, attributed to the famous 18th century cook, Kajsa Varg, is "You take what you've got" ("Man tager vad man haver"). And that is just what Sony & Co have done here. They have digged in their big archive, and found a lot of good old Mendelssohn recordings (and a few new ones as well). My purpose with this little essay is not to review each recording, but to give a view on the ...

It is impossible of course to capture Baroque music on a single CD, but if you want just one it doesn't get any better than this. Outstanding and generous selection of many of the best known excerpts of the period, excellent performances throughout, and superior sound quality. Even the casual listener will recognize many of these great works, such as the theme from Masterpiece Theater, ...
