Finian's Rainbow

Original Broadway Cast Recording
Masterworks, 2009
A gem not to be missed!
Finian's Rainbow is one of the most beautiful scores ever written for the Broadway stage. Although the book is very dated by today's standards, the score is one of the best. A great cast too. Ella Logan is wonderful as Sharon McLonergan. It took the movie studios quite some time to take notice of Finian's Rainbow. 21 years later, in 1968, Warner Bros. released the bloated film version ...

The perfect Emperor.
The Fifth Concerto, the Emperor, remains the most popular, and has been recorded innumerable times. First choice for me is perhaps Murray Perahia on Sony. Wonderful playing, very much from the eighteenth century, and a finale that really sparkles, but which does not lack power. Beautiful sound too, but rather short measure. I understand why some like the Emperor to be played in a style akin to ...

Inner beauty
The sense of beauty emerge within us as these chorals fill the space of our head and heart. A music written by real masters and interpreted by voices rarely heard. Beautiful.

More Divine Beauty and Peace!
I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers", "SACRED TREASURES V: From a Russian Cathedral, and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and ...

Best of the Digital Era
After DuPre's performance of the Elgar cello concerto (EMI/Angel), this is my next favorite performance. It boasts first class digital sound, a conductor and orchestra highly experienced in this kind of repertory, and the man who is arguably the best living cellist. It is less extroverted and fierce than the DuPre, but played with a deep, soulful insight into the music; everyone involved ...

Excellent rendition
As good as it gets. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the "old days." I cannot speak for the other titles, but Dvorak's 9th was very good indeed... Be sure you get the Hybrid SACD version and not an SACD unless you have an SACD player...

One of my all time favorite CDs.
OK, I'm not going to try to fool anybody into thinking I'm a music expert; I'm just going to say I love this CD! E. Power Biggs is the greatest organist ever, and here he plays some of Bach's best (and most accessible) compositions. I listen to this CD all the time and never get tired of it.

Used for Private Prayer after Communion
At weekday Masses I usually play a meditative piece after Communion to accompany private prayer. This collection draws people into prayer like few others I have heard.

Inexhaustible delight
Chausson is one of those composers--it seems to be a trait especially common among the French--who produced relatively little (think Durufle, for another great example), but who produced nothing that isn't exquisite. And, in Chausson's case, the music seems to have been fully mature from day one. If I could pick only one writer of chamber music to take with me to a desert island, it would be ...

Meditative and Deeply Moving
With respect to those who have negatively critiqued this CD, I wish to add to this forum my heartfelt praise. When one pauses to consider the ancient roots of this music, and the sanctity of the place to which it solely belonged for so many years, its depth and richness magnify. When one goes further, and allows oneself to sit still and breathe in the echoing precision of the voices so hauntingly ...

Superb Motets! Superb Choir!
Amazonian shoppers who've encountered my reviews of Renaissance and Baroque vocal music might remember that I'm often skeptical of performances by choirs rather than one-on-a-part ensembles, both for stylistic and recording-technological reasons. This performance by Cantus Colln, under Konrad Junghanel, belongs in a different category. The 16 motets by Johan Pachelbel and two of the older members ...

Awesome Product In My Opinion
First let me state I am no expert when it comes to classical music. In fact, I am more of an amateur. However, I do know a thing or 2 about quality, quantity, and many other things. Thus being said as far as I can tell this is a perfect box set for newb's, amateur's, and at least intermediate's (if not everyone) to the classical genre. Selection: As there are 10 CD's per each of the 10 ...

My personal All Time Favorite
I first recorded this concert off our black and white TV in 1968, onto a reel to reel tape recorder, and have listened to copies of that tape probably 1000 times. Despite the poor fidelity and the intervening years, simply put, nothing else even comes close. Horowitz is the greatest pianist I have listened to, and this is one of his greatest, if not greatest concerts. It has an eternal ...

I am a huge fan of Brilliant as a classical label - I have yet to be disappointed in a product I have purchased. I have purchased The Mozart Box set, The Bach Boxed set, and now this Masterworks set of Vivaldi from Brilliant. I have to tell you - they are all excellent. Now to the review of the Vivaldi Masterworks set - I must admit that I have heard better renditions of The Four Seasons(please ...

Good Franck Offering
Michael Murray gives a nice performance of Franck based on his instruction from Dupre. The registration schemes often come from the Dupre tradition, while other performances have just as vital connections with different registration schemes. I personally like the use of the flue choruses where others might include those wonderful but sometimes monotonous reed sounds more often. Demesseiux's ...

Best Handel Compilation of the Year!
I do think that this Decca set is arguably the best compilation reissue of such a bulk of Handel work which has been released in a long time, just in time to commemorate the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of the passing of il caro Sassone. There is a lot in this box, absence of libretti notwithstanding. The enclosed booklet is essential to navigate you through the track listings and timings ...

Chopin + Schumann + Horowitz = Unforgettable Playing
Volume Seven of Sony's Horowitz reissue contains very convincing performances of Chopin and Schumann, Romantic composers whose music was sympathetic to the pianist's interpretive style. It was not uncommon for Horowitz to bring to light a rarely played work by a well known composer, which is the case with Chopin's Introduction & Rondo in E-flat. This early composition (probably written for ...
