The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection100 reviews
Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Caddick, ...

Decca Broadway, 1999

More Sarah Magic
I'm a Sarah Brightman fan and looked forward to her interpretations of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. It's a great album, ranging from the ethereal "Piu Jesu" to the gritty "Don't Cry For Me" and Sir John Gielgud's spoken lyrics. As I listen to her duet with Jose Carreras, I find myself wondering why she never collaborated with Placido Domingo.

Handel - Messiah / Vyvyan · Sinclair · Vickers · Tozzi · Royal PO · Beecham36 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Sir Thomas Beecham, ...

RCA, 1992

UN-PC MAGIC
Just how un-PC can you get? It would be hard to get much further out of line with period performance thinking than these CDs of Messiah. Re-orchestrations (by Eugene Goossens) supplement the Handelian orchestra with a full complement of horns, trombones, doubled woodwind (including piccolo), a full string section (including a well-upholstered double-bass section) and a batterie of percussion. ...

a voice teacher and early music fan
A COLLECTIBLE FOR SURE! The "Messiah" was composed by Handel at his London home in the late summer of 1741..Charles Jennens described his libretto for the 'Messiah' as a "Scripture Collection", because it consists of a cleverly-arranged selection of biblical texts In his Messiah Handel combines the sheer grandeur and power of his Germanic roots with the color of his Italian experience, ...

Biber: Violin Sonatas9 reviews
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, Romanesca, ...

Harmonia Mundi Fr., 2002

The Extraordinary World of Biber
As Romanesca and other masters of the early music movement have made us aware in recent times, violin music did not begin with Corelli in the early 1700's. It began with a group of Italian, Austrian, and German composers in the 17th century who exploited the violin as a virtuosic and polyphonic, rather than simply lyrical, instrument. The last and greatest of these composers was Heinrich Biber. ...

Classical Kids

Children's Book Store Distribution, 1994

Grown up child can testify!
I am now a 23 year old student and I remember my parents playing these tapes to my sister and me in car rides multiple times when I was about 7 years old. To this day, I can recognize Vivaldi and know the differences, musically, between him, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. If you are hoping that these tapes will work their magic into the sponge-like minds of your kids, then I can offer first hand ...

Martha Argerich, Evening Talks10 reviews
Martha Argerich, Riccardo Rossi

Ideale Audience Intl, 2008

Insight into the Legend
Years ago when starting to collect classical music, I developed a basic rule regarding anything recorded by Martha Argerich - just get it as it will be historic and something totally unique. This DVD is no exception. While not all always agree with her takes on certain pieces, most all with a pulse will agree that Martha Argerich always makes the music she plays an electrifying headline event. ...

Handel - Messiah / Augér, von Otter, Chance, Crook, Tomlinson, English Concert, Pinnock37 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Arleen Auger, ...

Archiv Produktion, 1990

My favorite Messiah by far!
I love this album with the virtuoso harpsichord playing by the conductor, Trevor Pinnock, on period instruments, and the near perfect soloist interpretations. The spirit is just right with it and you will adore it. I hope it becomes your standard as it is ours. God bless.

The Tales of Hoffmann - Criterion Collection46 reviews
Moira Shearer, Robert Rounseville

Criterion Collection, 2005

Ahead of their time
Powell and Pressburger were way ahead of their time. The color, the music, the images are all memorable. A beautiful movie. This is the movie that got me interested in Opera 60 yrs. ago. Exceptionally well done. If you like opera or if you are just starting to investigate it, watch this film and you will be hooked for life.

A very lovely Christmas disc
According to the notes, the Elora Festival Singers is a professional chamber choir founded in 1980 by their director, Noel Edison. The name comes from a musical festival given every summer in Elora, Ontario. They have performed on the Canadian Broadcasting System, and given concerts in Eastern Canada and the United States. They are now the professional core group of the famous Toronto ...

BRAVO!
I really don't know what I could add -- especially to the cogent comments of earlier reviewer Ms. Anna Wolfson and Amazon's own Mr. Joe McLellan -- to help you decide whether this is worth your while. ...Except to write BRAVO! "Bravo!" to the producer, writer, and editor of the documentary, Jason Starr -- it really is a revelation in how a DVD can meld with music and the other arts to produce ...

Flute Mystery by Fred Jonny Berg [Blu-ray Audio] [Blu-ray]1 review
Fred Jonny Berg, Philharmonia Orchestra

2-L, 2009

Fred Jonny Berg...a modern day genius
Fred Jonny Berg's music is magnificent........I was honoured to be sent a pre-release Blu-Ray of Flute Mystery. The audio recording tecnique is trend setting and if your audio speakers are high quality and if you have some high end equipment, then you'll feel as though the orchestra is right there in the room with you. And like at our house, this recent composition by Fred Jonny Berg is ...

Decca, 2003

Surprisingly Fine Cross-Over from Fleming and Terfel
Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming are two of the most acclaimed opera singers of our day. But the musical theatre fan who puts on their Broadway CD, RENEE AND BRYN: UNDER THE STARS, expecting to hear a carelessly compiled hodgepodge of songs sung by voices ill-suited to them is in for a big surprise, beginning with the first phrases of the duo's warmly sung "Not While I'm Around" from SWEENEY TODD. ...

Wagner - Der Fliegende Holländer13 reviews
Simon Estes, Matti Salminen

Deutsche Grammophon, 2005

Senta at the center
In staging this opera, Harry Kupfer makes a single radical decision that drives the production like a full force gale: he presents the appearance of the Dutchman as Senta's delusion. She fixes on the romantic legend of a sailor doomed to roam the seas forever until he can be saved by a woman's love in order to escape from the confines of the life she is destined for, and to assuage the pain of ...

Glinka - Ruslan and Lyudmila8 reviews
Vladimir Ognovenko, Anna Netrebko

Philips, 2003

Came for Anna Netrebko, stayed for Valery Gergiev
I found out about this DVD, from an extra on the DVD, "Anna Netrebko, the Woman, the Voice." Netrebko was just 23 when she starred in this production, and she could not have been more beautiful. Her voice matched her beauty in every way, as did her piquant acting - just the way real life should be. Like most people, the only thing I knew about the opera was the overture, one of the all time ...

Handel: Messiah [Highlights]20 reviews
Victor Ledbetter, George Frederick Handel, ...

Telarc, 1993

Careful with the MP3 !
I haven't heard this performance. I've just ordered it because of the positive ratings and recommendations it's gotten. BUT... I wanted to grab a little preview from the MP3 samples, and what do I find but another amazon snafu. The MP3 takes you directly to the CD of the Robert Shaw Chorale, hardly likely to be of comparable merit.

The Mystery Of Santo Domingo De Silos Gregorian Chant From Spain10 reviews
Dom Ismaael Fernandez De La Cuesta, Chorus of Monks from the Abbey

Deutsche Grammophon, 1994

Breathtakingly Beautiful
I am a writer, so I got this CD to listen to while I write. Each chant on this CD is a jewel in its self. The voices are mystical and haunting and at the same time so peaceful, each of the singers is so insync with the others. When listening to this CD, I feel like I am transported into a medieval abbey surrounded by gregorian chant. I have heard many gregorian chant albums and this is by far one ...

Isabel Bayrakdarian ~ Joyous Light7 reviews
Armenian Anonymous, Sahag Bartev, ...

Cbc, 2002

Breathtaking!!!
This is a stunning recording. Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice is a wonderful clear soprano, rich and warm throughout its range and free of any roughness. Her long familiarity with this repertoire lets her shape each phrase beautifully and, apparently, effortlessly. The disk derives from a concert that took place in Toronto in September, 2001 commemorating 1700 years of Christianity in Armenia. It ...

Be My Love8 reviews

RCA, 1991

One of the most prodigious natural voices ever existed !
Mario Lanza proves once more his unsurpassed gifts for the belle canto with an outstanding easiness, limpid intonation, and engrossing conveyance even for the most exigent listener. This album includes two well known aspects of his career, the easy to listen pieces of well reminded soundtracks and unforgettable melodies and then a brief incursion in the light classic repertoire. These ...
