Mozart - Requiem / Augér, Bartoli, Cole, Pape, Wiener Phil., Solti22 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georg Solti, ...

Decca, 1992

Pick of the litter....
To my great surprise, in the last two decades of his life Solti turned into a marvelous Mozart interpreter. His '80's Figaro, and '90's Magic Flute and Cosi fan Tutte are among my favorite versions, Sir Georg's sometimes abrasive nervous energy (and scholarly use of reduced orchestral forces) makes for fantastically dramatic, anti-romantic readings. This requiem, recorded on the 200th anniversary ...

Soprano Sarah Soars
What a rare treat to hear such a wonderful voice! The music transcends the various languages( Latin, Italian, French, Spanish and almost no English) and communicates directly, beyond intellect, deeper to sooth the soul. This we expect from Opera and Religious selections such as Pucinni's "Nessun Dorma" and Lloyd Webber's "Piu Jesu". A favorite is the solo rendition of "Time To Say Good-bye". ...

Mozart for Babies
While reading Oliver Sack's book, Musicophilia, about the neuroscience of music illustrated through cases of neurological disability that knocked out areas of the brain involved in music perception and creation, I learned that children listening to Mozart developed specific regions of the brain and improve their mathematics scores. I decided that my 5 month old grandson's developing brain would ...

Faure Requiem Op.48 / Durufle Requiem Op.925 reviews
Robert Shaw, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

Telarc, 1990

French Choral Classics
This disk has set the standard for performing the settings of the Requiem mass by two great French masters, Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle. The Faure setting is an intimate one with occasional moments of tempestuousness. This particular recording features the more heavily orchestrated edition (for an excellent chamber version see the Cambridge Singers under John Rutter). Put in seven parts, ...

Great Music
The music on this album is very well done. Amazon's description was sketchy and after receiving the album I realized I already owned it. Fortunately I have friends that would appreciate it so it will make a wonderful gift.

Luciano Pavarotti

Decca, 2007

My favorite
I'm not a opera/music professional or expert so I cannot comment as to the perfection or lack there of in this recording. What I can say is that this is one of my favorite albums...my third copy. I play it in my car, open the sun roof, crank up the sound and take a long drive on a beautiful day. It makes me happy and I sing along, as best I can.

Requiem2 reviews
Conspirare, Company of Voices, ...

Harmonia Mundi, 2009

Incredibly beautiful
With this CD, Conspirare becomes choral royalty - a line that includes the Christiansons' St. Olaf Choir, the Robert Shaw Chorale, Robert Fountain's Oberlin choirs, Ericsson's Swedish Radio Chorus, Burgess's Purcell Singers, Parkman's Danish Radio Choir, and the Dale Warland Singers - all relatively small groups specializing in a cappella singing. The major pieces - the Howells and the Pizzetti ...

Anna Netrebko

Deutsche Grammophon, 2008

An outstanding & varied program
This is one of the best performances I have heard. I say this because although several of the selections were music I usually dislike, as performed here I really enjoyed them. This preogram includes a wide range of music from Viennese operetta of Kalman, Lehar, etc, through opera, songs by R.Strauss, Greig, Messager, Dvorak etc. to LLoyd-Webber, all of them very well sung. The Prague Philharmonic ...

Magnificat: Magnificent!
I realize the title of this review is pretty silly, but I had to think of something. I have always enjoyed classical music, but not nearly as much as other genres... that is until a friend of mine gave me SANCTUARY. I listen to it all the time now. The genius of Arvo Part's music is that although it is quite somber, it is very beautiful. I think that if you don't like classical music now, you ...

Verdi: Requiem & Operatic Choruses11 reviews
Paul Plishka, Giuseppe Verdi, ...

Telarc, 1990

A memorable album by Robert Shaw
I sometimes wonder why any top choral conductor would want to conduct, least of all record, a piece where the soloists invariably command center stage at the expense of the chorus. Robert Shaw (1916 - 1999), of course, is practically a god in the choral world. And while he has done well as an orchestral conductor, his claim to fame to most will always be his work with choruses. So here we ...

The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection97 reviews
Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Caddick, ...

Decca Broadway, 1999

Fantastic!!!
I'm a huge fan of Sarah Brightman's and listening to her sing all of these amazing Andrew Lloyd Webber songs is great! My favourite song would have to be Amigos Para Siempre the song she sings with Jose Carreras which always gets repeated a couple of times. I was also happy to finally find an album of Sarah Brightman's with Michael Crawford on it too as the phantom and not Steve Harley for a ...

Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem [A German Requiem]28 reviews

EMI Classics, 1999

don't believe the haters
If you own ten different recordings of this, you might find something to criticize. I own two - I'm still a fairly normal person - and this is the one I prefer. (The other is by Robert Shaw - and I think the orchestra is a little less powerful on that one. I plan to get more and compare them.) Regardless of which recording you get, this will kick your butt. This is some of the very best ...

Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

Requiem & Magnificat/Rutter, Cambridge Singers29 reviews
John Rutter, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2000

Cambridge Singers have never been better!
I have listened to many other composers' requiems, but this one beats them all. It is a little unusual to have both English and Latin liturgy in a requiem, but it is entirely appropriate in this case, as it contains the Mass, psalms, and personal prayers to Christ--I thoroughly enjoyed some of the burial service text sang along with the requiem mass. The Cambridge singers are sublime, and ...

Sacred Arias6 reviews

Decca, 2008

WOW! Why isn't she better known in the USA?
This was my first exposure to the immense talents of Katherine Jenkins, and it was only because Sacred Arias was featured with some other music recommended by Amazon in an email I received. Since then, I've bought two more CDs of Sacred Arias to give to others. This beautiful Welsh woman has a strong, clear voice that can only be compared to Sarah Brightman. Subsequent to my purchase of Sacred ...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I ...

Brahms - Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) / Auger, Stilwell, Atlanta SO, Robert Shaw21 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Robert Shaw, ...

Telarc, 1990

Another Excellent Shaw Recording
It becomes hard after awhile for me to comment on maestro Shaw's work, because I love all of it! Obviously, he definitely does not fall short with this CD. His talent of conducting was matched only by his love of music itself. The chorus and soloists are excellent. The sopranos seem to float over the rest of the chorus, and a sound of pure heaven is produced. I can just see both Shaw and ...
