HIGHLY RECOMMEDED.....
I LIKE OPERA WITHOUT THE WORDS AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE PURCHASED LATELY (AND I HAVE BOUGHT MANY LATELY). CARMAN WITHOUT WORDS IS ALSO VERY ENJOYABLE, AS ARE ALL THE "OPERA WITHOUT WORDS" CDS OUT TODAY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ADD TO ANY COLLECTION OF CLASSICAL MUSIC..

The sublime collection
I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster. Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA ...

For Rodeo alone, this beats the competition hands down
Leonard Bernstein's Columbia recording of Copland's "Rodeo" with the New York Philharmonic, made in 1960 still beats the competition hands down for sheer excitement and power. Lenny's "Buckaroo Holiday" (I) is wonderful: very fast and spirited, and no holes barred, like riding a bucking bronco. When I first heard this recording on LP in 1974, I could hardly restrain myself, as it is not only ...

Cult recordings!
Appalachian spring was first given by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Artur Rodzinsky (October 4, 1945). According the very Copland, the music of the ballet takes as its point of departure the personality of Martha Graham. She borrowed it from the heading of one of hart Crane's poems, though the ballet seems to bear no relation to the text of the poem itself. Certainly, and ...

Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy
Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one. What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

beautiful work
I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this recording. I used to think that only Angel Records could produce such quality. The people who did the mixing made me feel like I was standing next to the conductor. Every solo instrument seemed to sound its best. I also liked the interpretation. I though it was traditional and being a tone poem I had no problem closing my eyes and ...

The title says it all
Aaron Copland created classical music for about and by America. This extremely well performed and well selected album served as my true introduction to Copland's work. Vibrant, dramatic, passionate and utterly beautiful, this sampler of Copland's oevre really captivates the listener. I have lost many hours listening to "Quiet City" and "Appalacian Spring" two breathtakingly poetic pieces that ...

Aaron Copland: Populist and Conductor
If you want a prime collection of Copland's more accessible works, this is it. Yes, it's true that Bernstein's recordings of individual pieces are often bolder and livelier; but this set offers the composer's own authoritative view of his work, and for that reason alone it is priceless. In addition, it includes virtually all the orchestral pieces he composed during his "populist phase," from El ...

Best Collection of Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland is for me one of three of America's greatest composers of the 20th Century. Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross are the other two. Aaron Copland would have been 100 years old on November 14, 2000. In reflection I turn back to my first Copland album, "Copland's Greatest Hits." I was familiar as most people are with "Hoe Down" and that was the springboard for me. What attracted me was ...

Superb recordings of American classics.
I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself. The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a ...

THE AIDA HIGHLIGHTS DISC TO OWN!
Compiling selections from the 1970 Price/Domingo/RCA recording with recently-recorded narrations, read by Miss Price from her popular storybook, make this one THE Aida Highlights recording to get. Althrought there is a budget disc of the highlights of the very same recording, it'll never match this one for sure!

a dream come true
PBS: Great Performances > Dance In America > Choreography by Balanchine >: Parts 1 and 2 of 4 (1977) I saw some of this series on TV back in 1978. I was awe-striken. I was a twenty-year fan of Stravinsky's music already and impressed by the composer's high opinion of this dance master (Mr. B). Seeing it for myself (being unable to go to NYC and actually attend) was totally thrilling and ...

The composer as conductor is unusurpassed
This is a reissue of recordings conducted by Copland himself that are totally definitive and, to my mind, superior to the recordings by Bernstein that are generally considered to be the best. The composer has a broader, grander vision of these works, taking them at a slower and more majestic pace than Bernstein and others. In his hands this is great classical music, not just upscale cowboy ...

Great Intro to Modern American Classical Music
I'm not a Classical Music expert, but I found "American Classics" to be a very good collection of great 20th century American Classical musical numbers. The bulk of the selections were composed by Leonard Bernstein. However, other composers such as John Kander, Max Steiner, Aaron Copland, Stephen Sondheim, Henry Mancini, and John Williams are also included on this collection. All of the ...

...And this album is the perfect soundtrack to it. In this compilation are the creme de la creme of modern nocturnal classical pieces, with the exception of Khatchaturian's Sabre Dance. Here is the anthem of Manhattan itself, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" by Richard Rodgers, "Gavotte and Blues" by Morton Gould, "Fancy Free: Gallop, Danzon and Waltz" by Bernstein, "The Three Cornered Hat" By De ...
