A Very Special Christmas Live!6 reviews
Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, ...

Interscope Records, 1999

Very upbeat
I enjoyed every song on this 38 minute CD. I have a pretty good collection of various types of Christmas music and I consider this to be a great addition. I didn't realize this was part of a series and plan to purchase at least one more of this series. I'm not a rap fan but I enjoyed the Run DMC rendition of "Christmas in Hollis". "Christmas Tears" sung by Eric Clapton was spectacular. I see ...

The John Rutter Christmas Album25 reviews
Franz Xaver Gruber, Stephen Varcoe, ...

Collegium, 2002

Good for Chorus Members!
This is an excellent Christmas album! John Rutter is truely a wonderful contemporary composer. As a member of a symphony chorus that sang several Rutter numbers this year, the album was a big help in learning some of his lesser known carols. Thanks!

Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir & Singers

Word Entertainment, 1995

Christmas Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir CD
It is a wonderful CD! The music is fantastic. I love blended choral music and Brooklyn Tab fits the mode for me! Several songs I had not heard so it was a delight to hear new Christmas music.

Songs of Angels - Christmas Hymns and Carols28 reviews
Robert Shaw Chamber Singers

Telarc, 1994

All-Time Christmas Best!
This is easily my all-time favorite Christmas collection. There are other excellent choir albums, of course, but the Robert Shaw Chorale is the finest in every way, and inclusion of the (rarely performed) Boar's Head song puts this one at the top. EVERYONE who likes traditional Christmas music should own this album.

The Kinks Choral Collection12 reviews
Ray Davies & the Crouch End Festival Chorus

Decca, 2009

Different and Entertaining
I didn't know what to expect, but I was blown away by the first song (Days). Ray's voice is still at the top of his game (at least with the help of studio recording), and the additon of the choir doing countrapuntal harmony (I think that's what it is called) was beautiful. As I continued to listen, I was surprised when one tune turned out to be You Really got Me. During parts of the CD it ...

A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert / Frederica von Stade, Kathleen Battle, Wynton Marsalis9 reviews
Wynton Marsalis; Kathleen Battle; Frederica von Stade

Kultur Video, 2007

Angel Voices
The stars must have been aligned perfectly, all must have been right with the world on that night of December 8, 1991 in NYC's Carnegie Hall when this Christmas concert was filmed, because it is an example, one of those rare instances when everything falls into place perfectly. On this particular night Kathleen Battle, Frederica Von Stade, Wynton Marsalis and Andre Previn performed, not only ...

Christmas Star10 reviews
John Rutter, Cambridge Singers and Orchestra

Collegium, 1997

A Beautiful Christmas classic!
Rutter's settings of traditional Christmas carols give new life to some old favorites. The orchestrations are lovely, and the a capella selections will make you feel like you have the world's best English carolers standing on your doorstep. This CD includes many standard carols, and a few lesser-known ones, like the gorgeous "All My Heart This Night Rejoices," which in my opinion deserves to be ...

Andrea Bocelli: Vivere - Live in Tuscany [Blu-ray]18 reviews
Sarah Brightman, Kenny G.

Sugar, 2009

Not a gushing, over-the-top fan, but WOW !
As my title says, I'm not an over-the-top "everything he does is wonderful" (in fact, my spouse and I had floor seats at his Madison Square Garden conert a few years ago and thought it was terrible) fan of Andrea, butI have to say this Blu-ray DVD is beyond a homerun from both his performances and the quality of the Blu-ray itself. First, the concert. His singing and his performances have ...

James Galway's Christmas Carol13 reviews
Franz Xaver Gruber, John Ireland, ...

RCA, 1992

Wonderful Holiday Fare
You may find this CD's opening track, "Silent Night," particularly striking. It's not the usual John Freeman Young translation, but a newer one by British conductor and composer Sir David Willcocks. Since the song was never a literal translation of Josef Mohr's "Stille Nacht" text, there's certainly no reason NOT to try out a new version of the text, but the new lyrics certainly jump out at ...

Natalie Dessay, Juan Diego Florez

Virgin Classics, 2008

Magnificent performance of a great opera
I just viewed my new purchase of "La Fille du Régiment." Every singer was superb in this performance. Just to listen to Flórez sing the nine high Cs in "Ah! mes amis," was a delight. It was pure perfection, and what a voice! One thing that surprised me was the DVD that I received from Amazon had a format of 16:9, not 1.33:1 as it was described at Amazon. If I had known that I would have bought it ...

Cambridge Singers Christmas Album7 reviews
Stephen Orton, Adolphe Adam, ...

Collegium, 2003

Glittering Chrismas Music
I own virtually all of the CD's of John Rutter (whom I greatly admire) and the Cambridge Singers, and I am a fan of English Choral music in general. If I were asked to recommend only one of the many Cambridge Singers Christmas albums, or indeed one of any English Christmas album, a hard choice, this would be it. As others have noted, this CD is a compilation of songs from previous cds with four ...

Messiah: The Complete Work8 reviews
George Frideric Handel, John Rutter, ...

Hendrickson Worship/Martingale Music, 2007

A fine first-tier Messiah recommendation
As a fan of Rutter and the Cambridge Singers, I knew their take on Handel's Messiah was a natural for me. Although the sound of the Cambridge Singers has changed over the years, it has never lost its distinctive hallmarks, as on this recording. Rutter has a first-class group of young soloists, and I especially like the soprano and bass soloists. I know that Melanie Marshall might not be able to ...

Christmas Songs28 reviews
Various Artists

Nettwerk Records, 2000

Not like all the others
I bought this CD for the Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan song but I ended up enjoying most of the CD! There are only a couple tracks I skip (which is pretty good for a CD I didn't listen to before buying). Overall a good holiday CD to mix it up a bit. You may want to listen to the entire CD before putting it in a random play at a dinner/holiday party.

Noël20 reviews
Joan Baez

Vanguard Records, 2001

Beautiful And Unique
I bought this album on vinyl in my teens, and it immediately became one of my favorites. I frequently played it outside of the Christmas season, and always found it evocative of not only the spiritual element of Christmas, but something else as well that I cannot quite describe. Tradition, emotion? Some have called it melancholy; there's a trace of that as well. I don't know. Anyway, it's ...

Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas6 reviews
Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, ...

Polygram Records, 1989

Holiday music by some of the legends of American jazz.
There's something for everyone on this wonderfully eclectic recording, which ranges from Oscar Peterson's almost lullaby-like piano on "A Child is Born" to Bill Evans's jazzy piano improvisations (overdubbed) on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," and Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "O, Little Town of Bethlehem," a full-out, hand-clapping, rocking and stomping Gospel song. Containing both vocals and ...

Simply the best!
Once again, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doesn't disappoint. This is probably the best Christmas CD I own! Their version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is priceless!
