A great addition to my music collection
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are ...

A Beautiful, Moving Recording of a Towering Masterpiece
We had the privilege of hearing Boulez conduct the Mahler 8 on April 30, 2009 in the Musikverein in Vienna with nearly the same soloists. I am glad to have this recording as a souvenir. Boulez' interpretation is luminous and transcendent, beautifully phrased, beautifully sung (even the sopranos aren't audibly straining as on so many recordings - one can hardly blame them if they do!). To hear ...

Amazing Value
I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

Which Onegin to buy, Levine or Bychkov?
When The Gramophone gave a lukewarm review to Levine's 1989 Eugene Onegin and a rave to the 1993 set under Semyon Bychkov, I felt a healthy skepticism. How a magazine solely devoted to classical listening could hire writers with such lamentably bad ears is beyond me. So I decided to investigate for myself. Without a doubt these are the two leading versions of Tchaikovsky's most famous opera. ...

Excellent selections... my favorite is the Sanctus by Gounod. The music seems to build in the blood... the organ being the heartbeat. If you turn the volume up just right... a memorable experience. Beautiful!

It is the best collection of classic masterpieces.
I had this collection and lost it in 2000 when moving to a new house. I took me a time to find it but after having it again I can say it is the most valuable selection of classic music, it is truly the 100 top masterpieces and the sound is excellent.

A wonderful mezzo voice
Elina Garanca displays a lush, rich mezzo voice in this CD. She also shows strong coloratura technique and handles the bel canto repertoire with aplomb. The liner notes have her mentioning that some have suggested that she might try the soprano repertoire; however, her mezzo portfolio is superb, and I hope that she stays there. A few representative cuts from this CD. Chapi, "Al pensar en ...

Very nice set, but the Brahms is outstanding
Though I usually prefer a bit more briskness in the faster movements, the Bach pieces for both single and double violins are given fine performances. Especially lovely is the Oistrakhs' reading of the adagio in BMV 1043. Thankfully, the sound does not exhibit the kind of steeliness or stridency fairly often characteristic of other Baroque and Early Classical period recordings....The two Beethoven ...

My desert island CD pick
I could -- and sometimes do -- listen to Nessum Dora over and over. I have never felt music so passionately as I do the selections on this CD. It is truly the best of the best: the best "songs" from the best operas being sung by the best singers at their very best. I challenge anyone who doesn't like opera or ever music to listen to this CD. You will fall deeply in love.

Blomstedt, DresdenSK: Schubert Syms Comp: Charm, Sparkle, Big Band Schubert Style
I've recently praised Jos van Immerseel and Orchestra Anima Aeterna for their HIP excellence in the complete Schubert symphonies; really their overall musicality wins the day, period instruments or not. Now I come face to face with Herbert Blomstedt leading one of Europe's oldest and most distinguished orchestras, the Dresden Staatskapelle. I am listening to the complete set. Most of these ...

Finest performance of Concerto No. 4 available.
The Emperor Concerto probably is supposed to be the main attraction on this CD, and the performance of it presenteed here is laudable. But for me the lovely 4th is the most beautiful of the Beethoven Piano Concertos and this performance by Claudio Arrau and Sir Colin Davis is special. It is, quite simply, the most beautiful performance of this uniquely lyrical concerto that I have ever heard. ...

Understanding the Intricacies of the Schumann/Brahms Love Triangle
Whispers, poems, and pages have been floating around for years about the strangely romantic triangle that bound the composers Robert Schumann, Clara Wieck Schumann and Johannes Brahms - secrets that will be forever the purview of intuitive writers and philosophers and historians. This very intelligent and tender CD REFLECTION is one way of examining the closeness of these three remarkable and ...

You must hear this recording
It's very exciting to see Bohm's Beethoven cycle, Mozart recordings and Tristan und Isolde get the praise that it deserves. For those of you who are not familiar with Bohm, take the leap and see why everyone is so excited. You may notice that many of his lower profile recordings (such as this) often have higher ratings then the classics. Bohm is not a surface conductor; many will testify that ...

A wonderful recording
Be advised that 'Tristan und Isolde' is probably one of the top ten greatest works in the history of western music. So you can understand why there are so many recordings and so many disparate preferences as to which is "best" or "greatest". This recording is the one and only recording I own. I'm not a recording addict, so I doubt I'll buy another. I've had it since it debuted way back in the ...

A "must have" operatic production - very moving
I have had a laserdisc copy of this opera on the shelves for many years but never managed to get past the first act so this BD was my first exposure to the complete opera. A movie with a relatively thin story line succeeds because of the artistic ability of the actors just as one with a strong story line can fail because of poor acting. A successful operatic production requires just so much ...

This Bruckner cycle sparkles and shines with spiritual profundity!
I bought both Jochum cycles (DG and EMI) of the Bruckner Symphonies well over a year ago and listened to them both over and over for several months. I finally reached what I thought was the saturation point and, being afraid I had over-done it, put them away for awhile. I recently decided to listen to them both straight through again, starting with the earlier DG set; finished that one and moved ...

Ultimate Weber: And Not Andrew Lloyd Webber!
Carl Maria Von Weber would himself enjoy this collection of his most famous and brilliant compositions. Released on the Phillips label, this 2 disc cd contains music of a composer who was largely considered to be the first composer of German Romantic opera in the 19th century which would quickly become the vogue of influential composers such as the young Richard Wagner. Von Weber (pronounced ...
