At the Movies20 reviews
Andre Rieu

Denon Records, 2004

Movie Themes with a Classical Twist
What's not to like about a good song from a good movie? All the classic movie themes (i.e., Titanic, Zorba the Greek, etc.) are here but played by a full orchestra. I considered this approach to modern music a true and distinct pleasure and a nice break from the classical music that Andre Rieu's orchestra normally presents. The music is uplifting and makes you want to break out in song or get ...

I enjoy this type of music. For relaxation, it's great. Great for background music when I'm working.

Vaughan Williams: Fantasies; The Lark Ascending; Five Variants31 reviews
Ralph Vaughan Williams, Neville Marriner, ...

Decca, 1990

Iona Brown was very special
The Iona Brown recording of "Lark" here is famous in Britain and justifiably so. Brown, who died in 2004, grew up in the English countryside and had a deep experience of what Vaughan Williams was trying to capture. The rest of the CD is lush, crisp and wonderful -- the Academy's renowned strings at their early 70s peak. It's an analog recording (1972) and the sound is terrific. I don't think this ...

The #1 Opera Album44 reviews
Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, ...

Decca, 2001

The best gift ever.
I purchased this CD as a birthday gift for my sister. Because I personally know nothing about opera, I didn't know how to buy a single opera for her, or even which one she would like if I did know how to get it. So I settled on this "sampler" style Cd, and she just loved it. This is the best of the best of all opera arias and performances. My sister plays it all the time, and I think it is ...

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

The Most Famous Opera Duets38 reviews

EMI Classics, 1994

Don't let the low price fool you!
This CD is magnificent, especially for people just getting into opera. I've never really been interested in opera before, but I've recently started listening to it and wanted a CD of my own to listen to. When I bought this, I was a little wary of the low price, and I wondered what the quality would be (mostly quality of the content). Let me tell you, it is magnificent! There are so many ...

Vox (Classical), 2000

Handel 25 Favorites
I purchased this CD because I like to listen to Water Music and even have it as my ringtone. The other feature I enjoyed listening that came with this CD the vocal songs...Hallelujah Chorus and For unto us a Child is Born. Those who like classical music should add this to their collection. The only drawback is when it came to track two and three.... Pastorale and Bourree I can't hardly hear it ...

5 stars? More like 50 stars!
Keith Lockhart has continued behind the heels of John Williams at the helm of the Boston Pops Orchestra in extraordinary fashion since 1995. Anyone who has been privileged to see him conduct the Boston Pops can feel the enthusiasm he has for the orchestra's traditions and legacy- and for classical music. This theme certainly holds true for this CD. I have been collecting a set of good CDs for my ...

Samuel Barber, Gabriel Faure, ...

Erato, 1997

Wow!
I'm a long-time listener of all things rock-'n-roll, from Classic rock, to Alternative, and even a little Metal. I first heard this CD while having dinner at a friends house a long time ago, and I loved it. I've always been enchanted with choir music, so I bought this CD. Well, after years of listening to it to help me to unwind in the evening, I somehow misplaced it. So I came to Amazon to ...

The Story Of Handel5 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Dieter Kober, ...

Vox (Classical), 1995

we love the whole series
The whole Vox Music Masters series has been a treat from age 4 on. The stories are child-oriented, but not sugary sweet (divorce and insanity both mentioned if it is appropriate for that composer). The short clips one review complained of caught the ear of my son, and he'll even pick out the tunes if he hears them as musak in a department store.

Barber's Adagio18 reviews
Samuel Barber, Ralph Vaughan Williams, ...

Sony, 1990

Superb
Bernstein's usual wonderful interpretations of 5 pieces. This is probably the best performance of Barber's Adagio you can find and I have heard them all. One other note is Williams' Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis... it is spellbinding. This cd is definately worth the price if you are into slower strings.

Soothing and spiritual
I hope this very personal review will be helpful to others. I bought this CD for my father during his final days. He listened to it every evening before he went to sleep. It afforded him great comfort and peacefulness through all of his pain and suffering. As for me, I was transported to the Catholic masses I loved as a child and the fond memories of my family. Although I am no longer ...

Music for Compline21 reviews
Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, ...

Harmonia Mundi USA, 2007

Luscious!
This is a must-have cd for anyone who enjoys music from the Renaissance period. The pieces are flawlessly performed by a terrific ensemble. The chromaticism of some of the selections foreshadows the 20th century, while most of the music is pure choral sweetness. The harmonic rhythm is always interesting and often unpredictable. The singers perform with liquid tones and impeccable ...

Cello for Relaxation9 reviews

RCA, 2001

A Fine Way To Relax
Currently I'm enjoying this cello music while in the car, as it lessens the stress of traffic. It contains a variety of cello pieces that have beauty and grace. As a cellist I appreciate the supurb execution of each piece. This CD is everything I hoped it would be.

Harem204 reviews
Sarah Brightman, Frank Peterson

Angel Records, 2003

ENCHANTING!!
This is the first ever Sarah Brightman album i've ever listened to, and it was one of the most magical listening experiances i have ever been through. Her enthralling voice sends chills up and down my spine and down and up again. The lyrics to every song are just purely beautiful. Every line holds so much strength that makes you feel so many different emotions. The lyric that stands out to me ...

Copland: Symphony No. 3; Quiet City10 reviews
Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1990

Late, great Bernstein
This was one of Leonard Bernstein's last recordings, and turns out to be one of his most memorable ones as well. Copland's Third Symphony uses his "Fanfare for the Common Man" as its climax, and Bernstein mines every bit of emotion you might expect. I'm not completely convinced that the symphony is necessarily one of the composer's tightest works, but Bernstein makes every minute sound ...
