Appalachia Waltz / Ma, Meyer, O'Connor44 reviews
Irish Traditional, Mark O'Connor, ...

Sony, 1996

Beautiful
Anyone giving this less than 4 stars must be kidding. This is beautiful. I'm not a "classical" fan, but this isn't a "classical" album. Something about the instruments being played with a bow and not picked/plucked/hit didn't sit right with me at first, it's like listening to an all winds section. But, I got over that and just let it wash over me. "First Impressions" is my favorite, it ...

Lullabies for the young and young at heart
Purchased the CD from Amazon.com when my daughter asked me to find some soothing music to help her first child relax and fall to sleep. They have and are still enjoying the CD very often.

Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies93 reviews
Beethoven's Wig

Rounder / Umgd, 2002

The entire family loves this CD
From 4 years old to 40 years old, each of us enjoys Beethoven's Wig. We have #1 and #2 and I could not tell you which the kids enjoy more - but I do have a slight preference for #1. I'm online now getting ready to purchase #3 and #4 will be for Christmas. I'm also buying #1 for a baby shower gift. My friend is not particularly "into" classical music but she laughed a good bit listening to our ...

Mozart Edition: Complete Works (170 CD Box Set)102 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Bruce Abel, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2005

Fine performances
Some collections of this type -- a composer's complete works -- are pieced together from here and there, old sources and new, and the resulting collection can be uneven. This set brings together many complete cycles of Mozart's works from individual artists and groups. For example, the fine Hungarian pianist Klárá Würtz performs all the sonatas here in recordings originally issued as a ...

Chopin: Favorite Piano Works14 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Vladimir Ashkenazy

Decca, 1996

Why are you waiting?
Ashkenazy is one of the titans of Chopin. Davidovich and Arrau are the other two. They're all you need. Get Davidovich for the concertos, (inlcuding the Krakowiak--Op 14), Arrau for the nocturnes and a few micscellaneous pieces. Ashkenazy handles everything else. (Btw, Ashkenazy vs. Davidovich re. the impromptus is a toss up. But since the impromptus aren't on this disc, you can make that ...

The Ultimate Guitar Collection7 reviews
Isaac Albeniz, Italian Anonymous, ...

Sony, 2005

The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!
The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, ...

James Whitbourn: Luminosity (And Other Works)4 reviews
James Whitbourn, Matthew Berry, ...

Naxos, 2010

An NPR Driveway moment
On Thursday April 22 NPR reviewed this album. I never would have found it on my own as I'm not a huge classical fan, nor one of choral music. But this music stopped me in myt tracks and had tears running down my eyes. The etherial, beautiful sounds of multiple human voices combined with pipe organ, sitar, viola and other instruments is unlike anything I'd heard before, particularly in such a ...

Mahler: The Complete Works - 150th Anniversary Box3 reviews
Gustov Mahler, Simon Rattle, ...

EMI Classics, 2010

Great "Mahler in a box" - excellent deal.
It was bound to happen sooner or later: pretty much everything known by Mahler put into one box (16 cd's). Of course, one could argue endlessly about what performances of the various symphonies EMI could have/should have chosen. But what this set has going for it are a series of outstanding renditions of the various song cycles and vocal works. In addition to having the Thomas Hampson/Wolfram ...

Sleepy Baby9 reviews

Brainy Baby, 2003

Perfect
We love this CD for our 12 week old. She has trouble sleeping well and this CD is perfect for soothing her as part of her sleep routine. The music is gentle and the melodies are clear. The volume is consistent, which is really important - it never startles her. There are also very short gaps between songs so there is no distracting silence. Lovely!

Soothing and spiritual
I hope this very personal review will be helpful to others. I bought this CD for my father during his final days. He listened to it every evening before he went to sleep. It afforded him great comfort and peacefulness through all of his pain and suffering. As for me, I was transported to the Catholic masses I loved as a child and the fond memories of my family. Although I am no longer ...

Sacred Works1 review
Mykola Hobdych, Kiev Chamber Choir

ECM New Series, 2010

Bought this as a gift for Mother's Day
My mother had been feeling a little blue, so I thought that the beauty of this CD would bring her some joy. I was right! She called to say how much she was inspired, and had it playing in the background. There's something so lovely about choral music, no matter what your mood is - it enhances it and fills a room with light.

Baroque Guitar17 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Gaspar Sanz, ...

Bream reigns Supreme
I have listned to this CD over and over since I purchased it several months ago. I must state that this is a great collection of guitar music that few others will be able to duplicate any time soon! Bream has been criticized for a technique that is some-what sloppy and values interpretaion over perfection. I do not hear that anywhere in this recording! Take for example the Bach fugue in A minor! ...

Hildegard von Bingen: Canticles of Ecstasy24 reviews
Hildegard von Bingen, Cologne Sequentia Ensemble for Medieval Music, ...

RCA, 2010

Soul-stirring
Though I am not a believer, I am interested and moved by all sorts of music, including a lot of historical music. This recording was my first introduction to the amazing Hildegard von Bingen. The music she composed, to me, is best described as soul-stirring. While listening to it, I get the sensation that it has reached inside to my heart and grabbed hold. I suspect this has something to with ...

Satie: 3 Gymnopdies and Other Piano Works2 reviews
Erik Satie, Pascal Rog

Decca, 2006

The Single Best Satie Recording of All Time
I will not beat around the bush here: Pascal Roge is the world's best Satie interpreter. No one else comes close. I have no idea why Ciccolini is so often recommended as essential Satie. Next to Roge he is laughable and clueless. Buy all of Roge's Satie. In fact buy all of Roge's everybody. If you absolutely need only one Satie recording (a greatest hits one might say, even if one doesn't want to ...
