Masques4 reviews
Philippe Noiret, Robin Renucci

Homevision, 2004

One From the Vaults
The release of Chabrol's box set last year (2003)has led to a re-evaluation of this seminal new waver's entire ouvre. Previous to the release of this box set common wisdom held that Chabrol made several masterpieces in the sixties and early seventies (Les Biches, Femme Infidele, Le Boucher, This Man Must Die) but that by the mid-seventies his creative well had dried up. Common wisdom also held ...

Intimate Strangers25 reviews
Sandrine Bonnaire, Fabrice Luchini

Paramount, 2004

Intimate Strangers
An ingenious French treat with psychological underpinnings, director Leconte's "Intimate Strangers" is a meditation on the randomness of life and fate. Though the conceit may sound a bit contrived, Leconte brings it off thanks to a subtly intelligent script and dead-on performances by Luchini as William and Bonnaire as the entrancing Anna. Also look for Michel Duchaussoy, who provides ...

Tolerance1 review
Ugo Tognazzi, Rupert Everett

Synkronized USA, 2007

a gem too good for its kind
The casting is in perfect harmony with the exceptional characterization, quite a feat given the immense heterogeneity of the leading parts. Assembling Italian, English and French actors works perfectly well and adds an adequate cosmopolitan strength to the story line. Tognazzi IS Dionysos, Brochet IS innocence and Everett IS redemption. They are all magnificent.

Driftwood2 reviews
James Spader; Anne Brochet

Trinity Entertainment, 2005

Probably more a womens' film
Very few films can hold your attention when it has only 2 chracters for almost the entire film. This film is haunting, worring and sexy all at the same time. The location is fabulous and the acting is superb.

The Bengali Night (La nuit bengali)6 reviews
Hugh Grant, Shabana Azmi

Goldhil Home Media, 2005

A beautiful and very powerful film.
"The Bengali Night" is a very subtle and beautiful film, where Indian culture has the leading role even if Hugh Grant and John Hurt are both excellent. As the film begins, we are introduced to the world of those expatriates living in India, although there are some, like Hugh Grant's character, Allan, who refuse to absorb this very strong and powerful culture. Allan is an engineer who builds ...

The Gerard Depardieu Collection (Tous Les Matins du Monde / The Count of Monte Cristo / Changing Times)2 reviews
Gérard Depardieu, Jean-Pierre Marielle

Koch Lorber Films, 2007

An escellent buy!
This is a Depardieu combination-plate guaranteed to please the entire family. TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE is a fable about two masters of the viola da gamba de Coulombe and Marrais: gorgeous music and lots of imagination. THE COUNT OF MONTECRISTO has always remain a family favorite and this on leaves no one disatisfied:French revenge at its best. And for chronic soap opera addicts, CHANGING TIMES ...

Dust22 reviews
Joseph Fiennes, David Wenham

Lions Gate, 2003

REAL deal
OK, obviously some of the people writing the reviews here don't know a thing about the history of the Balkan region, and most of them don't care, so they condemn the movie as a bad, bloody or nuisance, but in fact, this people have no clue what they are talking about. I can say this movie is full of emotions, full of realistic facts and real scenes... As far as I can see some people asked ...

All the Mornings of the World (Tous les matins du monde) Two-Disc Edition44 reviews
Jean-Pierre Marielle, Gérard Depardieu

Koch Lorber Films, 2006

"In Search of Perfect Sound"
"For the time before we were born, before we breathed, before we saw light." I first saw this film in the early '90's shortly after it was released in Los Angeles. I recently viewed it again. The film's message is a profound comment on the life and spirit and gift of music and the great importance of those who teach and guide us. The story is a metaphor for the passion of the music. It ...

Cyrano de Bergerac85 reviews
Gérard Depardieu, Anne Brochet

MGM (Video & DVD), 2004

One of the high water marks of French cinema
Jean-Paul Rappeneau's wonderfully cinematic version of Cyrano De Bergerac is one of the genuine high water marks of modern French cinema. Rappeneau is a director who really understands movement, and his far from static approach revitalizes the piece and frees it from the tyranny of the wonderful words to give it wings, while Gerard Depardieu's magnificent Cyrano keeps the film's emotions ...

Driftwood [Region 2]7 reviews
James Spader, Anne Brochet

This movie is real and intense!
Driftwood is quite magical. I watched it last night and while there are horror elements there it was something else, you feel like you are there, right alongside those there....its a transportation of your soul to that place and the characters and is a visceral expierience is the best sense. I really can ' t tell you how much i enjoy Driftwood, its a film i think every teenager needs to see ...
