Brahms: A German Requiem2 reviews
J. Brahms, Herbert von Karajan

Deutsche Grammophon, 2008

A solace deeper than tears
Following her stroke in January 1865, Brahms hurriedly traveled to see his mother but she died, aged 75, before he arrived. In April of that year he began work on the Requiem. Although Brahms never spoke of the matter, the death of his mother was the impetus for writing his single largest composition. It bears little resemblance to the Requiem Mass of Catholic liturgy. It is, rather, an offer of ...

Itzhak Perlman: Beethoven/Brahms Violin Concertos11 reviews
Beethoven, Brahms

EMI Classics, 2005

maybe the best "modern" video of these works
It's hard to beat this DVD - Two of the best pieces of music ever written (Beethoven and Brahms violin concertos) One of the great soloists alive today, and the Berlin Philharmonic with a talented conductor with great insight into the music (Barenboim). Excellent production, sound and video - A few strange intonation problems in the Brahms still don't prevent me from giving this one 5 stars.

Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood

Warner Home Video, 2007

oh yeah baby
2001 was one of my favorites when I was growing up. I read the book, which is a little more complicated. Do em both. The book and the movie. There was always many possible meanings to the ending. Figure it out on your own. Have fun my Space Cadets!!

Europa Konzert From Athens: Johannes Brahms: Piano Concerto No.1 & Piano Quartet No. 1/Daniel Baren4 reviews
Brahms, Barenboim

Euroarts, 2005

Brahms honored by Barenboim and Rattle
A stunning DVD! The concert was recorded live at the Herodes Atticus Odeon in Athens, Greece on May 1, 2004, and features the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) under the leadership of Sir Simon Rattle. The works performed are Brahms' piano concerto No.1 ( with Daniel Barenboim at the piano) and the piano quartet No.1 (arranged for orchestra, by Arnold Schoenberg). There are many positives ...

Davd Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter - Live at Alice Tully Hall, New York 19704 reviews
David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Richter

Video Artists Int'l, 2006

Grandes artistas ejecutando a grandes compositores
I was surprised to find this dvd, it came out of nowhere, but I am glad it did. I've heard Oistrakh and Richters recordings and they are just amazing. This dvd is better than other Oistrakh dvd because it's coloured, which makes it much more enjoyable. The sound is great, the picture is good enough to see each player's technic. The performance is just great, specially the Brahms Sonata, full of ...

Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, Chopin, Bach, Brahms: Alexis Weissenberg - Classic Archive3 reviews
Brahms, Stravinsky

Medici Masters, 2008

One of the Most Extraordinary Piano Films Ever Made
My title applies primarily to the 1965 black & white film of Alexis Weissenberg playing Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, amazingly creatively filmed in Stockholm by Åke Falck. I remember seeing this film on TV almost forty years ago and the memory of it has stayed with me ever since. I am so pleased finally to have a copy of that marvelous film. Weissenberg was in his early thirties ...

Carlos Kleiber - Beethoven Coriolan Overture, Brahms Symphony No. 4, Mozart Symphony No. 33, Munich6 reviews
Kleiber, Beethoven

Deutsche Grammophon, 2005

One of Carlos Kleiber's last concerts
This is one of Carlos Kleiber's last concerts, filmed live in 1996 in the Herkulesalle, in Munich. Kleiber looks more elderly and frail (he was just 66) than he did in the 1983 Beethoven Symphonies 4,7 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (Philips DVD), or the 1991 Brahms Symphony 2 (Philips DVD) also in late 2004. There is a special sense of occasion here:the orchestra and audience clearly love ...

David Oistrakh: Brahms/Sibelius/Tchaikovsky7 reviews
Brahms, Sibelius

EMI Classics, 2005

Not for computers
I've noticed that reviews that complain about defective DVDs usually get inundated with negative responses. Since nearly every word out of my keyboard gets that, I might as well plunge on. This DVD has something called a DVD-ROM built into it. I didn't try it. It's supposed to allow you to print out a booklet of info presumably about the music and David Oistrakh. However, the DVD itself will ...

Brahms: Complete Symphonies1 review
Brahms, Swr Symphony Stuttgart

Hanssler Classics, 2006

HIP without tears
Roger Norrington has what we might politely call a "mixed" reputation, and his recordings of the Beethoven symphonies with the London Classical Players, in particular, have evoked condemnation hilarious in its hyperbole. Part of the problem in that case was a rather unflattering tonal profile, which was taken for interpretational coarseness when it was due, at least in part, to the production ...

The Brahms Symphonies / Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Kurt Masur8 reviews
Brahms, Masur

Kultur Video, 2007

sound pops picture breaks
All the performance was great. However, in 2nd mov. of the 1st symphony and 1st mov. of the 2nd symphony , many times the sound was popping and pictures were breaking. Amazon sent me a replacement, but all the same. There must be manufacturing problems I suspect but it was very annoying when you want to concentrate upon music.

Alexander Gavrylyuk: Piano Recital4 reviews
Alexander Gavrylyuk, Haydn

Video Artists Int'l, 2006

An Enormous Talent
After reading the promo on awards, etc. one is left with a certain scepticism, which is quickly transformed into awe, and no "shucks" about it! This 22 year old is already a stellar talent. After the initial Haydn sonata, one of the more rare items (and for once not another recording of the big "E" Flat, wonderful as that is), which is played with care and spirit, the performance of the two ...

Famous Composers - Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms

Kultur Video, 2005

Brahms was one of the seminal music figures of the 19th century. He composed symphonies, concertos, and many songs, piano pieces, and chamber works. Opera is the only major musical medium in which he did not write. More than any other composer of the second half of the 19th century, Brahms was responsible for reviving what is termed "absolute" music. This describes compositions which were to be accepted on their own terms as interplays of sound ...

Elena Bashkirova and Friends: Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival2 reviews

EUROARTS, 2009

Jerusalem's Marlboro
The Jerusalem International chamber Music Festival was founded by eminent pianist Elena Bashkirova. Like the Marlboro Festival in the US it brings together established stars of the classical musical world with young artists of talent for several weeks of intense collaborative work. This DVD contains performances from the 2008 Festival. For some reason Amazon does not generally list the works ...

Bernstein: Brahms Symphonies nos. 2 & 41 review
Brahms, Boston Symphony Orchestra

Euroarts, 2008

A Trip Down Memory Lane
This DVD won't be for everybody, particularly as there are DVDs with Bernstein conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in all the Brahms Symphonies. Brahms: Symphonies or Leonard Bernstein Conducts Brahms - Boxed Set But there are reasons for some of us to get it. For one thing, these performances are from 1972 which is a period before Bernstein began his inexorable slowing down of tempi, worrying for ...

Amadeus Quartet (EMI Classics)1 review
Mozart, Beethoven

EMI Classics, 2005

The best; playing as one being
My son is 13-year-old cellist Oliver Aldort, [...]. He listens to music all day long and he listens to many chamber groups and conductors of same music. When it comes to chamber music, Oliver has always come back to Amadeus quartet and I bought this CD for him because he says, "Even the best other quartets always have some out of tune notes, or don't have as ringing sound. The Amadeus quartet ...

Voices of our Time - Grace Bumbry / Helmut Deutsch, Chatelet Opera2 reviews
Hector Berlioz, Brahms

Tdk DVD Video, 2004

PROVING THEM WRONG
The "Amazing Grace" has certainly proven the critics wrong. In the early 1980's, some critics said that Grace Bumbry's voice would be in tatters in a few years and that she would be voiceless in a very short time. This DVD, made about twenty years later, certainly proves them WRONG!! Grace still has plenty of voice plus the experience and sublime artistry to use it beautifully. The subject DVD is ...
