Valentin25 reviews
Juan Cruz Bordeu, Julieta Cardinali

Miramax, 2004

Don't be misled by bad marketing. This is a great film about a small boy.
First, I would like to say that I resisted "Valentin" for years because of the poster - a cute little boy and the tag line, "Cupid just turned 8." I imagined it to be an Argentine version of "Sleepless in Seattle." I guess Miramax thought it would be a stronger "sell" to international audiences. Personally, I thought it sounded cloying and therefore avoided the film. Now that I've seen ...

Al Otro Lado7 reviews

Uni Cine, 2007

Subtle and very well done
In these days of demonizing outsiders, this beautifully crafted film reminds the viewer that, at the bottom of it all, we are all human beings with the same hopes, fears, needs and desires. I wish this film were required viewing for anyone before they offer their opinion on any aspect of the immigration debate.

Confusing!
I could not make much sense of this movie. All the stars go to Alberstein's beautiful song "Hada Gadia"

(3.5 STARS) Spanish Cult Director's (Largely) Entertaining Homage to the Spaghetti Western
"Accion Mutante" "Dying of Laughter" and "Perdita Durango." As these film titles suggest, Spanish cult director ?lex de la Iglesia had never made an ordinary film. Just take a look at "Perdita Durango" based on the novel by Barry Gifford (also known for his works with David Lynch). It is full of anything that mainstream Hollywood pictures would cautiously avoid to show on the screen (and the film ...

What's up with Almodovar's DVD releases???
This is a great movie....Why isn't it available on DVD in the US? There's a festival of Pedro's movies in the theaters around the country right now....but can you buy his DVDs...for most of them, NO! So, what's the story? Is there a re-release in the works? A boxed set for Chirstmas? Deluxe versions with commentary? Let us fans in on the secret! Thanks!~Tom Burkert

Almodovarian Kitch
Thoroughly enjoyable light entertainment. Every movie doesn't have to change the world. Can't go wrong with those actresses. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Old School Almodovar
Seeing that Almodovar's new movie (La Mala Educacion) has to do with the catholic church, I felt it appropriate to go back and see this old one. Glad I did. Very funny film. Though the dvd quality is not that great (and several scenes have been deleted), the film still stands up to the test of time. A drugged out singer takes refuge in a convent run by nuns with serious issues. These nuns do ...

Another Jewel in Pedro Almodóvar's Crown!
Though the films by one of our geniuses of filmmaking in our times, Pedro Almodóvar, is making films now that are polished to perfection - Volver (2006), La Mala educación (2004), Hable con ella (2002), and Todo sobre mi madre (1999) - his early films such as this one '¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!!' in retrospect contained all the identifying marks that would establish him as not only one ...

La Comunidad3 reviews
Carmen Maura, Eduardo Antuña

Lolafilms Home Ent, 2005

great Spanish thriller-comedy
This is one of the best Spanish films over the last 5 years. It is funny and tense at the same time. All the characters are fun and Carmen Maura turns in another great performance. Based on the notion of a building's "community," (or bldg association) this film picks fun at the Spanish culture of nosy neighbors and apartment living. Director de la Iglesias also pays his respects to Hitchcock in a ...

LA PROMESA: The Spanish Way with Gothic Thrillers
Some of the most intellectually terrifying films, stories that are imbued with religious symbolism, mysticism, and surrealism, are products of Spanish filmmakers and LA PROMESA is no exception. Writer/Director Héctor Carré finds just the right amount of credibility in the prelude to his psychological thriller to make the following strange events teeter on that thin line of delusion and reality. ...

THANK GOD for a DVD publisher with taste
When I saw this as part of a Lincoln Center festival of films from Spain, I was convinced I would never see it again and focussed on the acting of the players with whom I was familiar, Carmen Maura and Federico Luppi giving a staggeringly menacing preformance. I also loved the intricate plot and clean, but involving visuals. And, there was Laia Marull. With no other evidence, I cannot make my ...

Move Over, Mrs. Markham1 review
Ana Belén, Verónica Forqué

Lolafilms Home Ent, 2005

Mrs Markham should move right off the shelf
This has to be the worst DVD I have ever wasted time and money on. Despite the "English" option it only has subtitles. It is poorly acted and DULL! I lasted 20 minutes before I turned it off. It was about as exciting as watching paint dry!

Entre vivir y soñar1 review
Carmen Maura, Alex Brendemühl

Paramount

Fresh Romantic Comedy
The synopsis given has nothing to do with this movie. Carmen Maura plays a neglected housewife and mother who takes a job as a temporary chef in Paris in order to find her childhood crush who visited Barcelona every summer. The scenery is gorgeous, showing off the amazing ambiences of Barcelona and Paris. The movie is refreshing and uplifting, with the usual Spanish liberalness toward ...

Ana Belén, Verónica Forqué

Lolafilms Home Ent, 2005
