Eat & Drink in Three Languages
This enchanting movie, "Eat Drink Man Woman", is one for which you should break the rule of "No Subtitled Movies" See it first before watching its companion re-make "Tortilla Soup." Both will be ones you'll watch over and over. They have you covered if you like food movies. They've gotcha if you like more relationship plots than explosions. And you might also like to see old-timers Requel Welch ...

A must-have
You will enjoy this movie whether you're straight, gay, bi, or whatever. It's full of laughs yet pulls in some serious moments as well...a great balance. The lesbian story line is primary, but does not dominate the movie as other issues are addressed. I am very picky about movies, especially those of the lesbian genre...thankfully this movie made it to the top of my shelf with "Loving ...

Gay, Green Card, Generation (Gap)
(This one is for Steve Hedge.) This film is directed by a clever Taiwanese director, Ang Lee, who was honored the academy's award a few years ago. This black comedy has several layers: the gay, the immigration, and the old generation (the parents). An interracial relationship is never easy when you have a conservative Taiwanese parents and you are gay. A 'green' marriage could help you out ...

KILLER FILM!
If you enjoy beautiful asian women, action, and as good as Hollywood filmmaking... this film is for you! A breath of fresh air. A ton of fun without going cheese. The acting was surprisingly right on the money. Get this movie if you like Seagal, Van Damme, Bruce Lee, etc., but without much of the sympathy, vengeance filled plots that are the same ol' same ol'. Chinawood is here to stay.

One of my favorites.... ever.
Subtitles. Might keep people away. But it shouldn't phase you a bit. This is a truly excellent movie. A well crafted adult movie, that reveals so much on how love is affected by time.

Visual Poetry and Martial Arts Perfection for fanboys and filmsnobs, alike. . .
First off, it is important to note that this version is the shorter, American version. While some of the changes were subtle, they do take away from what I consider to be a flawless film. For instance, the translation of Huang Di in this version is 'Our Land'. And while that seems nice, the true translation is 'All Under Heaven'. Just has so much more poetry to it. If you enjoyed this film ...

A haunting film that just won't let go
"Three Times" is much more than it appears on first viewing (as I also find to be the case with "Millenium Mambo"). While little appears to transpire on screen in any of the film's three stories, each segment worms its into your subconscious where they do their work over days, even weeks. There is a haunting quality, especially in the performance of Shu Qi, where she alternately enchants and ...

Very accessible with a broad appeal, deeply influential in bringing asian style to western films. . .. . .
Now, I know a lot of people don't love this movie. But hear me out before you disagree. I acknowledge that this film was made with a western audience in mind. That means that as a typical wuxia film it is watered-down by comparison. It was also apparent that they tried to do a lot with the script, probably too much, so as to please the arthouse crowd. Because of those things I can't review it ...

Tears of the Gunmen
Perhaps it is because I watched "Blood Brothers" after watching the horrendous August that "Blood Brothers" seemed a bit slow, but fairly interesting. Shu Qi who glowed in The Transporter does a good job as the lovely showgirl Lulu who dreams of being a film star. Her costumes alone made me like the picture. Chang Chen who was in Happy Together plays the assassin Mark who develops an ...

Obsessive Love
I am going to cut to the chase and talk about my favorite out of the three - which would be "The Hand." I am fully aware of the fact that human beings have the tendency to pursue the unattainable with the utmost intense passion that sometimes, the term "pedestal" does not even begin to scratch the surface. If I were to compare this young tailor's obsession to something chemical, it was like ...

"Maybe We Only See Half of the Truth"
OVERVIEW & STORY: This review is intended to be part critical analysis and part celebratory love letter to a film that's a genuine modern masterpiece of cinema. Writer/Director Edward Yang's Yi Yi is as close to a "perfect" film as I've seen; warm, funny, humane, poignant, beautiful, evocative, and expertly crafted in every sense of the word. For those who don't know, Edward Yang is a part ...

Three international directors explore meaning of sexual attraction
Three international directors have made short film exploring nature of the human sexuality. First story is set in China and explores connection between a concubine and a young tailor apprentice who makes her dresses for her clients. Young tailor falls in love hopelessly with a beautiful prostitute. He knows her body so well, he can make her clothes without taking her measurements. I loved the ...

Bittersweet Love Story Applies to Everyone
I am a new fan of director Wong Kar-Wai movies. Happy Together is one of my favorites. When I watched the movie for the first time, I did so with no prior knowledge of the film other than it was a love story between two men. If you're over 30, you have probably lived this story. You may have been Ho Po Wing (Leslie Cheung) or you may have been Lai Yiu Fai (Tony Leung), but you have ...

A creepy old house with a blood tale to tell
If you enjoyed The Legend Of Hell House, you might enjoy this creepy haunted house film. Very well filmed, it will remind you of Suspiria, with the long halls and sweeping camera work. Although there are no real huge scares here, it is chocked full of a foreboding atmosphere. And the hanging legs will get under your skin. All three of the main charaters are in top notch form. The acting is ...

Very complete
I certainly agree with all the other reviews. A complete story, unique imagination, with no "missing links" and had that atmosphere of reality which a lot of other ghost type movies lack which makes a huge difference. Would have been nice if the deleted scenes were not deleted, but nevertheless, a brilliant piece of work I reckon that stands out from the others, and concentrating on detail and ...
