Chaplin at Work
I remember sitting in front of my television, rapturously watching the documentary "Hollywood" created by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill in 1980. Each of the 13 segments dealing with a specific part of early Hollywood history, played on PBS and was a true delight. In this era before DVD, and even VHS, it was a great way to see a large number of rare clips from the Silent era. A few years later, ...

Laughter and tears
Chaplin is a rare gem. I don't give five stars lightly, and I don't give them to praise old respected classics. Citizen Kane deserved less. A Buster Keaton silent film was nothing compared to Chaplin. He makes you laugh and cry. What more could you ask for in a movie? There are some similarities to another Chaplin gem, City Lights. He liked to put comic boxing scenes in his movies. He ...

Family Values NOT
This film embodies the abject misery a lot of people experience when forced to go home to The Family for the holidays. You have to confront aging parents, aging siblings and old school friends/rivals. Nothing is the same anymore; yet you are bombarded with bittersweet memories. This film delivers in all those areas. You identify with the characters because you either know people like this or are ...

Wonderful!
Wonderful! Fans of Prince Ranian wil cherish a 1900 film of human torso "Kobelkoff," showing off his unique dance stylings. "Danse Serpentine," "The Talion Punishment," and "Kiriki" feature breathtakingly beautiful coloring by hand and stencil. In the delightfully funny "Excelsior," Melies materializes a giant lobster (seventy years before "Multiple Maniacs"), among other magical ...

Four exceptional films
Before I bought this collection, I'd only ever seen one Chaplin film, "The Great Dictator". I liked it so much, I wanted a copy and at the time, this little set was on sale for half-off. I'd heard good things about "Limelight" and "Modern Times" as well, and so I figured,"What the heck?" and ordered the box set. What an excellent choice! In this set you get four fantastic films; the ...

This is a great old movie. Setting is dated but the story and acting are great. Marlon Brando could do comic acting! Has a very good scene about seasickness on a cruise ship. Buy it.

Moved me to tears!
I had never seen a Chaplin film in full, nor ever heard of "City Lights", however I had seen the bio-pic "Chaplin" with Robert Downey Jr., and was aware that Chaplin was considered a genius. so one morning when I stumbled across "City Lights" while channel surfing, I was very interested to watch the film and finally get to see some of Chaplin's work. I found myself enjoying the movie much more ...

A Wonderful Movie
This is a very good movie. In fact, it is extremely well done all around. The acting was very effective and convincing. Russ Tamblyn is excellent. I particularly liked the cinematography. Also, the script worked on many levels making it appealing to a wide audience. I found this film to be both entertaining and thought provoking.

Superb and very entertaining
Excellent variety of Chaplin movies that are worth many viewings and well-worth the price of the collection. Good quality DVD's of very old films. Monsieur Verdoux, a rare Chaplin "talkie", is dated in plot structure and appeal and includes several scenes of stilted acting (Chaplin is actually a better actor than the others in the cast). Although not of the caliber of the silent films, it makes ...

The heyday of physical comedy
The majority of MCE's SLAPSTICK FESTIVAL are silent movies by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Stan Laurel and the Keystone Kops. Also here are the usual public domain two-reelers by WC Fields, Our Gang and the Three Stooges. All but seven of these titles are available on previous MILL CREEK compilations. What's new: "Easy Street," "The Cure" and "The Rink" starring Charlie ...

One of the Best Period Dramas Ever Filmed!
I have watched literally hundreds of period dramas over the years and own many on VHS and DVD. Believe me when I write that "Feast of July" ranks as one of the best and should be owned on DVD. This movie has it all - absolutely BRILLIANT acting, beautiful cinematography and a storyline that is at once heartbreaking, romantic and dramatic. I could not tear my eyes away from the screen and I am ...

Possibly his most underrated
While perhaps not up to quite the same fine level as, say, 'City Lights' or 'Monsieur Verdoux,' this film is a small minor masterpiece in its own right, and frequently cited as Chaplin's most underrated film. Viewing the film, it's hard to believe that the filming experience was such a nightmare, what with things like fires, heavy rains, theft, and Chaplin's messy divorce from his second wife. ...

CHARLES CHAPLIN, OPUS 69
***** 1952. Written and directed by Charles Chaplin. Academy award in the Best Musical Score category in 1973 (LIMELIGHT wasn't shown in los Angeles until 1972) ! Sublime melodrama of the British genius with Buster Keaton as guest star. A young ballerina falls in love with an aging clown. Masterpiece.

KILL A MILLION THEY CALL YOU A HERO; KILL ONE AND THEY KILL YOU
THe first scene filmed by Chaplin is the final execution scene in which he sums up the philosophy of the whole film and CHaplin's own pacifist philosophy. If we invade other nations to steal their oil, etc., and kill thousands of innocent bystanders, women and childrne in the process, why are we called heroic and patriotic, but if we delight some lonely old widows and fill their dreams and then ...

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime is a Great movie
My name is Amanda and I'm in a 10th grade world history class. We are currently studying the Great Depression and WWII and we have just finished watching Brother, Can You Spare a Dime. This movie helped me to understand not only the culture and life of this era but also helped me to understand the things that led up to the Depression and Stock market crash as well as Pearl Harbor and WWII. I'd ...

All these reviews and no one mentioning the exceptional child actor who plays Rupert Macabee. I remember Michael Chaplin growing up and rebelling against his old man, writing his memoirs--"I Couldn't Smoke the Grass on My Father's Lawn." Then dying far too young, and perhaps the poignance of that early death colors my response to his performance here as the left-wing little boy who gets tamed ...
