Joie de vivre -- the DVD is better
I'm glad that I saw "Casanova" on DVD before I saw the edited version on PBS. I loved the DVD; my impressions of Casanova were that it's a great story, comic and tragic, full of joie de vivre. There were moments that made me laugh out loud, and moments touched with deep sadness. I think David Tennant is brilliant -- he brings the youthful exuberance and resiliency and optimism, and Peter O'Toole ...

Black Snake Moan140 reviews
Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci

Paramount, 2007

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine . . ."
An excellent, underrated movie betrayed by its atrocious theatrical poster, BLACK SNAKE MOAN works on just so many levels. Samuel L. Jackson is Lazarus, a farmer and natural blues guitarist living in rural Tennessee. Lazarus' wife has left him for his brother, and the bitter Lazarus veers like a skirling wind between self-pity, world-weariness, emotionally-charged violence, and religiously-fueled ...

A 13-year-old's perspective
This movie by the BCC is based on the book The Railway Children by E. Nesbit. It hardly omits anything. The actors depict the simplicity and good-heartedness of the children, and none of the side-plots are skipped. For example, the children bring the broken-down Russian into their house without thinking twice. Even though they realize that they are poor, they see his distress and want to help ...

Me and Mrs. Jones
This is a very good movie to watch and especially if you are familiar with European customs. Robson Green is one of my favorite British actors and I tend to buy a lot of his movies when the movies are released. If you like Cinderella stories and maybe like to escape from reality every so often, then this is the movie for you. All the characters are very believeable and true to form. Even though ...

Why a Wonderful Movie failed at the Box Office.
Disclaimer--Having seen this movie eleven times in theatres and three times since I bought the DVD, I must confess up front that this is by far my all-time favorite movie out of the many hundreds I have seen over the years. [I'm 68 at this writing.] So the fact that I love it so much will undoubtedly influence this review, and, if you're looking for objectivity above all, this review is ...

Angels & Insects58 reviews

MGM (Video & DVD), 2002

Fluttering among angels and insects
"Angels and Insects" was an artistic breakthrough for director Philip Haas. Based on AS Byatt's novella "Morpho Eugenia","Angels" is a lush, sensual movie. Set in repressed Victorian England, it's a period piece that's at once campy and tasteful, elegant and melodramatic. It gained notoriety for its fleeting male nudity-but stands on its own. "Angels" opens in the Amazon rainforest. The ...

The Gravedancers - After Dark Horrorfest63 reviews
Dominic Purcell, Josie Maran

Lions Gate, 2007

Great Bad Movie!
This movie tried really, really hard. Three stars for the effort. The movie makers even used classic non-CGI, no-moving-parts masks for the monsters, and managed to pull off a few quality scary scenes. The story had potential, but I get the feeling it wasn't thoroughly thought out. Ever have an idea for a story or a movie at a bar, while drinking with your friends? After you sober up, ...

First Look International, 2004

Excellent
This was a sleeper, but I went on to discover that this was an excellent movie. Although Michael Keaton has perfoprmed better in other roles, this was a good reversal of a drama role from his standard comedy. Don't take that wrong, he is a great actor, something that these other so called actors could strive for in their performances.

Platinum Disc, 2002

Awesome Heavy Metal Horror!
This. Movie. ROCKS! Marc Price (Skippy from Family Ties) is pretty good in this, and Tony Fields does an excellent job as Sammi Curr. I especially loved the cameos by Gene Simmons (From KISS) And Ozzy Osbourne. He had the best cameo as a preacher revealing the evils of Rock 'N' Roll. I had to buy the VHS, though I knew it was also on DVD, but I hear the quality's inferior. I know the VHS quality ...

The Rules of Attraction191 reviews

Ellis and Avery are NOT for everyone but this is a PERFECT MATCH
Bret Easton Ellis is a writer that has NO middle ground. You either dislike immediately and not understand what all the fuss is about or you let yourself get drawn into what he is trying to display and go along for the ride. Rules of Attraction may be the least of his three works brought to the big screen but it may have translated the best with the direction of Roger Avary. It is also ...

Magic
Actor Al Corley directed this film about community theatre. Corley produced "Drowning Mona" with Bette Midler & Danny DeVito. Marcus Thomas who stars here as Peter Rooker played Midler's son in that film. Even though Thomas has acted in other films such as the street hustler in "Noel" with Susan Sarandon, his inexperience is SO convincing that you fully expect this to be his first film. The ...

The first 87 minutes is 2 stars & the last minute earns 1 more
Whew. Where to start? I rented this for one reason only. I like Clare Kramer, and true to form, was not disapointed as she again gives a good performance. The film however is sex and gore and gore and sex. Yes I know it's rated 'R' and what was I suppose to expect? Okay, I can live with the topless pair of vampire girls who garble out some kind of speech as they run around seemingly ...

A Magnificent Achievement!!!
I won't bother telling the plot of this film since so many other reviewers have outlined it in great detail. I will only say there is no greater cinematic indictment of the death penalty than this devastating film. What gives it special significance, of course, is that it is based on a true case - a case that eventually led to abolition of capital punishment in Great Britain. I shutter to ...

Murder!1 review

Westlake Entertainment, 2003

Worth 3 1/2 stars really. (Consider "The Alfred Hitchcock Box Set" for a cleaned-up, longer version of this film.
There's something about a silent film, a good silent film, that is just captivating to watch; and "watch" is what we do with silent films, after all, isn't it? Too many more modern films, by comparison, are all talk (often inanely so), devoid of much visual appeal. I think this accounts for Hitchcock's success (John Ford's and others too); his having started in the silent era when "Lights, ...
