Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)49 reviews
Charles Brackett, Claudette Colbert

Universal Studios, 2008

"Don't forget...every Cinderella has her midnight." And Midnight is one of the best of the screwball comedies
If "Midnight" as a title seems puzzling, think Cinderella. Except this time our Cinderella is a gold digger with a self-defeating habit of falling for poor taxi drivers. She's also one of the foxiest, funniest and sexiest young ladies in Paris. No staying at home to sweep out the hearth for her. Midnight, released in 1939, was one of the last of the great romantic screwball comedies that ...

So Proudly We Hail (Universal Cinema Classics)29 reviews
Claudette Colbert, Veronica Lake

Universal Studios, 2007

Stellar Film
This movie was a real treat. Most war films focus on the military, front-line aspects, understandably, and it's rare to find one that centers around the nurses' experiences. It's a shame this film not more well-known--I found out about it when I read "Our Mother's War"--because it hits all the right notes. The three principles, Claudette, Paulette, and Veronica play off each other very nicely. ...

It Happened One Night103 reviews
Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert

Sony Pictures, 1999

Just keep your eye on that thumb.
Ellie Andrews(Claudette Colbert) is running away(like she is so good at) from her rich father and on the way meets roughed-up newsman Peter Warne(Clark Gable). Similar to many films at the time, but this one stands the test of time better then most, the witty dialogue is still cunning and smart. Not to mention Claudette and Clark have brilliant chemistry, especially in the scene where they ...

The Cecil B. DeMille Collection (Cleopatra/ The Crusades/ Four Frightened People/ Sign of the Cross/ Union ...21 reviews
Cecil B. DeMille, Loretta Young

Universal Studios, 2006

Epics on an Epic Scale
The movie that made me want to buy this collection was "Cleopatra" with Claudette Colbert as a kind of "flapper queen of Egypt" which to me has always been a great hoot. While these are not the sorts of movies I would use to illustrate a particular historical epoch due to their accuracy, I would show them if I wanted to entertain someone. The Crusades is a good example with its characterization ...

Jeanette MacDonald, Maurice Chevalier

Criterion Collection, 2008

Naughty innuendo, skimpy lingerie and lots of bedrooms. These four Lubitsch films are a delight
"Shall I see you again?" asks Lieutenant Niki von Preyn (Maurice Chevalier). "Oh, I hope so," says Franzi (Claudette Colbert), the luscious and liberated young violinist and leader of an all-girl orchestra in Vienna. Niki met her an hour or so ago at an outdoor biergarten. "When" "Well, perhaps tomorrow night. We could have dinner together," she says "Ohhh...don't make me wait 24 hours. I'm ...

Great movie!
All I can really say is that this was a great film. The acting is very good, the quality is good, and Claudette Colbert is superb. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes her acting, or is interested in WWII movies.

The Palm Beach Story39 reviews
Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea

Universal Studios, 2005

"Useless wife" in demand (recommended)
Penniless Geraldine "Gerry" Jeffers (Claudette Colbert), knows how far her good looks can take her in the world. She loves her husband, Tom Jeffers (Joel McCrea) but doesn't like being poor and he is unwilling to pimp her innocent feminine wiles. The solution? Leaving her husband for Palm Beach to file for a divorce with nothing more than the clothes on her back, she becomes one of the world's ...

Drums Along the Mohawk63 reviews
Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda

20th Century Fox, 2005

John Ford and the American Revolution
Based on Walter D. Edmonds' historical novel, "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939) remains among the few memorable films about the American Revolution. Director John Ford's first Technicolor production benefits immeasurably from the Oscar-nominated cinematography of Bert Glennon and Ray Rennahan. Though episodic and slow moving in its narrative structure, Ford doesn't shy away from the brutal savagery ...

Let's Make it Legal8 reviews
Claudette Colbert, Macdonald Carey

20th Century Fox, 2004

Great old Hollywood comedy
A very funny movie with Marily Monroe in a small but sexy role. Even if you're too young to remember all the actors it's a great light comedy fit for the entire family. There's also an optional commentary by Robert Wagner who appears in the film. Nice, light, funny movie.

Three Came Home2 reviews
Sylvia Andrew, John Burton

Good Times Video, 2005

Great Classic War-time film
I enjoy this film. It is a great classic film mainly about a group of women kept in a Japanese concentration camp. Made a few years after the war ended, America was embracing stories like this, about people that lived such experiences. Some of the acting is dated but Colbert is great and the supporting cast is too.

Boom Town12 reviews
Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy

Warner Home Video, 2006

Update for the Boom Town DVD by Rags to Riches Reviewer
The new DVD sharpens the film up considerably. The Theatrical Trailer is included along with a cartoon and Hollywood short that don't have much of anything to do with this great film. As before, I mentioned that I had hoped that all the film would be put back together and although this is a little better there is still some cutting, including the Oklahoma Indian Land Deal Peace Pipe smoking scene ...

I Cover the Waterfront3 reviews
Ben Lyon, Claudette Colbert

Alpha Video, 2004

Stylish Pre-code Classic
"I'll be seein' you." -- Ben Lyon "You've seen enough of me already." -- Claudette Colbert Everything about this pre-code film from 1933 is stylish, including a lovely Claudette Colbert and Ben Lyon in one of his best roles. Director James Cruz and photographer Ray June used a lens wipe technique to transition from scene to scene and the harbor is beautifully shot. Based on Max Miller's ...
