Sneakers (Collector's Edition)102 reviews
Robert Redford, Dan Akyroyd

Universal Studios, 2004

The Hot Rock meets Hackers
From the writers who brought you WarGames. It also reminds me of the Redford film from the 70s, The Hot Rock. Both that and Sneakers are enjoyable, intelligent caper films the whole family can watch. Nice jazzy score, too. FYI, my version (the 2003 disc) includes a commentary track by the writers and director.

Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Broadway) (Keepcase)141 reviews
Angela Lansbury, George Hearn

Warner Home Video, 2008

Watch This Instead of the Movie
This film of the original stage production of "Sweeney Todd" is really a gem. If all you saw was the movie with Johnny Depp you missed out. This production has the tension, the disturbing images, the true scariness, and even the humor that the movie lacked. A lot of the credit goes to George Hearn and Angela Lansbury as the demonic leads. They have both the singing voices to handle Sondheim's ...

Stephen Sondheim's Follies in Concert23 reviews
Andre Gregory, Arthur Rubin

Image Entertainment, 2001

the best of the best
A valuable piece of theatrical history. I was there in that audience and watching the film gives me the same thrill! The only criticism is that the concert was presented and recorded in order to preserve a much fuller recording of the show than the original cast album which was heavily edited. Unfortunately, this film is also heavily edited and, therefore, is as guilty as the original cast ...

Putting It Together: A Musical Review45 reviews
Carol Burnett, George Hearn

Image Entertainment, 2006

Excellent Show
Unfortunately, I missed it on Broadway, but now have been able to enjoy it over and over again. Excellent cast with George Hern, Carol Burnette. THERE ARE NO WEAK LINKS IN THIS CAST!!!! Great way to enjoy some of Sondheim's best scores!!!

Volunteers17 reviews
Tom Hanks, John Candy

Hbo Home Video, 2000

Two thumbs up from a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer
Being a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer myself I find this film hysterical. The first time I saw it, in fact, was while in Peace Corps at a training session with fellow volunteers. We couldn't stop laughing the entire time! It's just ridiculously overdone - and wonderful because of it :) Sure, it's campy and the jokes are predictable, but it was never meant to be a high-brow film. The jokes ...

Sweeney Todd in Concert56 reviews
George Hearn, Patti LuPone

Image Entertainment, 2002

Best rendition of Sweeny
Comparing other versions of this show recorded on discs, this video rendition has songs missing from other versions and is by far the best musically. This concert version is a joy to experience. George Hearn is perfect as Sweeny with Patti Lu Pone as Mrs Lovitt.

Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who (Deluxe Edition)32 reviews
Sara Berner, Mel Blanc

Warner Home Video, 2008

"Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" Blu-ray
You know it's an unusually good week when Warner releases on Blu-ray three thowback classics, two of which involve a certain Dr. Seuss and one of which involves a certain Willy Wonka, and when Disney releases on Blu-ray "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." You could probably beat that, but you'd likely faint from the effort. First up is 1970's "Horton Hear's a Who," which neatly captures the ...

All Dogs Go To Heaven 225 reviews
Charlie Sheen, Sheena Easton

MGM (Video & DVD), 2001

Loved Both!
Now, I grew up watching All Dogs Go To Heaven. I probably watched it twice a week! Even though the storyline was pretty confusing, it was by far the "best movie ever!" And when I heard about All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, i was so excited! As soon as the library got it we rushed and got it. And you know what, I fell in love with Charlie and Itchy all over again. It was just like being a little kid ...

Grizzly61 reviews
Christopher George, Andrew Prine

Shriek Show, 2006

Recommend the Book!!!
We all know that the movie is entertaining but painfully dated and silly at times. Having said this, I highly recommend the book to fans of the movie. Finding a copy (even on Amazon) could be tricky, but it's a great (albeit short) read, and very hard to put down! I think most of us root for the rogue grizzly titan when watching the movie anyway, but in the book he becomes truly sympathetic as we ...

Broadway's Lost Treasures II15 reviews

Lost Treasures found
Provides a rare opportunity to see a Broadway performance as seen from the perspective of a theatre audience. Priceless.

Words and Music by Jerry Herman6 reviews
Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing

PBS (Direct), 2008

Wonderful DVD
To anyone who is a fan of Jerry Herman's music, this wonderful DVD contains just about everything you could wish to know. Well-considered comment without any of the usual awful showbiz "gushiness" that often accompanies such biographies, this film also contains archive footage from some of the original Broadway productions, which if only for that reason alone, makes it a little treasure. Highly ...

Gene Autry Collection: Tumbling Tumbleweeds4 reviews
Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette

Republic Pictures (I), 2006

GENE'S FIRST AND ONE OF HIS BEST!!!
After guest starring in Ken Maynard's feature IN OLD SANTA FE (1934) and serial MYSTERY MOUNTAIN (1934) Gene was given the chance to star in Mascot's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE (1935) when the studio cut ties with the troublesome Maynard. And even though he sang a few songs as an entertainer in IN OLD SANTA FE and the setting for that film was a contemporary Dude Ranch, it's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE that ...
