Top Hat - When America was Tops
There are two theories about human evolution. One is that we are moving forward - mankind has gone from using stone tools to computers and air conditioning. The other theory is that we are going backwards - the fall of the Roman Empire idea. If you subscribe to the latter, point of view, then you may not want to watch the movie, "Top Hat." It may only confirm your worst suspicions. Filmed in ...

We love Cinderella because we remember it so fondly
As I was going thru over 200 reviews of the classic, it struck me that most of them were from people who had seen the original broadcast in 1965 and the story, songs and actors stuck with them...I'm sure Hollywood wishes all their movies did that the way this Cinderalla has done for all of us. It was never about the best sets, most well known actors or updating a plot that has stood the test of ...

The other 5 star reviews were right
The other reviews, which gave this 5 stars, are right. The transfers are great and the special features go above and beyond what I expected. Enough said. For a follow up or before seeing these movies, I would recommend reading a biography of Fred Astaire. I found, "The Man, The Dancer: The Life of Fred Astaire" by Bob Thomas and Fred Astaire, to be very good. A volume with more meat is, ...

Great But Should Have Been Titled Comedy Kings and QUEENS
This is a great set but it's mistitled - there are plenty of comedy QUEENS on this set, in fact in a number of the films the female star has the main part. A what a bunch of funny ladies - Eve Arden, Ginger Rogers, Carole Lombard, Betty Hutton, Irene Ryan, Joan Davis, Rosalind Russell, Lupe Velez, Marie Wilson, ZaSu Pitts, Gale Storm, Helen Broderick, Frances Baiver, Billie Burke, Margaret ...

"I'll try to be a well-behaved light bulb." -- Rogers to Milland
"You know Sue-Sue, when I look at you with just my bum eye, you look almost grownup. Sue-Sue, you're a knockout!" -- Milland to Rogers Ginger Rogers gave an enchanting performance in one of the most unusual films Billy Wilder ever helmed. He turned the worn out premise of children playing grownup on its ear by having Ginger Rogers portray a child. She masquerades as a twelve year old girl ...

The Lost Art in Film Making
I would not describe this magnificent 1952 Howard Hawks' film as a classic Marilyn Monroe movie no matter what the box says. Although the footage was stocked with funny interludes, it lacks in the Monroe style that so appeals to Marilyn's fans. The only mitigating factor is that the movie was made before Monroe's film fame took hold. Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers certainly dress up this comedy. ...

Last Immortal Gershwin Score
"Shall We Dance," (1937), another musical-comedy-romance, was the seventh collaboration Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made for RKO Radio Pictures. It reunites most of the old gang, before and behind the camera, but it's easy to see inspiration is wearing thin: after this picture, Astaire went to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Rogers pursued her ambition to do drama. Still, it's got a lot ...

one of my favorites!
Kitty Foyle, starring Ginger Rogers -- in one of her non-dancing roles -- is one of my favorite movies of all time! Ms. Rogers won an Oscar -- and rightly so -- for her performance of a woman torn between the love of her life (who is always just out of her reach) and the love of a young doctor who adores her. A classic tale, wonderfully acted and artfully directed...grab the popcorn and snuggle ...

A CLASSIC FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!
STORY - A soldier and a young, attractive woman in a hurry to catch the train 'home' for the Christmas holidays, both stop at the newspaper stand simultaneously. The soldier (Cotten) is obviously nervous and distracted and the woman (Rogers) is confused why gum is not available. They end up sitting across from one another on the train. The conversation is awkward but the soldier decides quickly ...

A Charming Comedy
This wonderful film from the 1930's has a quiet charm all to itself. Screwball comedy elements are intertwined deftly with a warmth missing from many films in the genre. Director Gregory La Cava produced and directed this film, putting the final touches on Allan Scott's screenplay as well. Walter Connolly and Ginger Rogers are marvelous as a lonely businessman and a young girl out of work, but ...

forget the plot
Forget the cliched plot and the wooden acting (Ruby Keeler may dance up a storm, but she "reads" her lines), and wait for the dance numbers. 42nd Street is amazing. Busby Berkeley is incredible. One of the best.
