Captains Courageous47 reviews

Warner Home Video, 2006

Spoiled little Rich kid snob saved from himself by gruff old fisherman
This is a timeless tale of the little rich kid snob saved from himself by the gruff old man. Its pretty good and involves a rich kid sneaking beer and smoking cigars, getting sick, and then falling overboard while puking over the side of the luxury cruise ship. He gets picked up by a Nantucket fishing boat that is just going out and won't be back to port for like 3 months. He tells everyone ...

Norma Shearer, Lionel Barrymore

WARNER HOME VIDEO, 2008

Love and sex, pre-Code style
There were a few years in movie making when sound was first introduced but the Production Codes had not yet been in force. These codes would severely limit the ability of movies to depict the real world: sex, violence and corruption were toned down - often to the point of sheer blandness. Crime could never pay, authority figures were always forces of good and even married couples were confined ...

Warner Home Video, 2006

Good collection of horror films at a great price
Rather than just focusing on a few horror franchises and milking them for all they were worth with five or six B quality sequels apiece as Universal did with Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man, in the 30's and 40's Warner and MGM would usually take just one good idea and make just one good horror movie. This is a collection of six of Warner and MGM's better excursions into ...

You Can't Take It with You (Remastered)3 reviews
Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Stanley Andrews

Sony Pictures, 2008

Feel-good Capra for hard times
I don't care whether a few cynical souls accuse Capra of too much sentimentality; I love his films. And "You Can't Take It With You" is at least a temporary antidote for the economic hard times a lot of Americans are going through now. He always seems to find a fresh way of reminding us of the most important things in life - the love and support of family and friends. Besides, Barrymore is a ...

Warner Home Video, 2006

"When your head says one thing and your whole life says another, your head always loses."
Aaaahhh ... Bogey. AFI's No. 1 film star of the 20th century. Hollywood's original noir anti-hero, epitome of the handsome, cynical and oh-so lonesome wolf; looking unbeatably cool in his fedora, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth. Endowed with a legendary aura several times larger than his real life stature, and still admired by scores of women wishing they had been born 50+ ...

Dinner at Eight36 reviews
Marie Dressler, John Barrymore

Warner Home Video, 2005

stunning character studies with comedy and tragedy that is as good as it gets
Dinner At Eight is an outstanding movie with great acting, a fine plot even if a bit complicated, and a wonderful cast! The movie held my attention every step of the way; and it's a much more artistic film with much more social commentary than I expected. When the action begins, Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is obsessively planning a dinner party. Unbeknownst to Millicent, her husband ...

Grand Hotel (Snap case)52 reviews

Warner Home Video, 2004

Crawford Takes Her Place at the Grand Hotel
"Don't you understand? Don't you?" -- Barrymore telling Garbo he loves her. Vicki Baum's popular novel was given the MGM treatment for the first time in "Grand Hotel." Though it does not hold up as well as its remake, "Weekend at the Waldorf," due to the lack of symmetry between a director and one of the stars, the overall impact is not muted in the least. It remains an entertaining time ...

Duel in the Sun43 reviews
Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten

MGM (Video & DVD), 2004

A love with two faces!
"Duel in the sun" is the "Gone with the wind" of the Western genre. The movie begins with a warning, a cactus flower that epitomizes and warns us about the tragic love of Perla Chavez , a free and gentle flower who grew wild, a half bred girl who was born signed by the disgrace. She is witness of her mother' s death by the hands of her own father, who sends her to his second cousin Laura Belle, ...

TOP NOTCH SHIRLEY TEMPLE AT HER BEST!
This is a classic Temple film! The Tap Dance on the stairs sequence is now legendary and it is amazing to see this talented kid keep up with Bill" Bo Jangles" Robinson. One of my favorits Shirley Temple movies for sure! There are only a hand full of her films that I will always remember and this is one of them. Heidi,Bright Eyes and Curly Top were the others. Camille on DVD
This was unobtainable locally. Tried everywhere. Thanks to Amazon I now have it . Was about 12 years old when I saw the movie and Greta Garbo became my first love. Despite the period it was made, she would still outclass most modern actresses. The DVD also contains the silent Ivor Novello version which is interesting. Cannot see what people saw in him. A real ham!

Treasure Island28 reviews
Wallace Beery, Jackie Cooper

Warner Home Video, 2006

Has a great time watching this one.
Fabulous film -- it helps that Stevenson is also one of my favorite authors, but what really sets this version apart are the performances. Jackie Cooper has such an endearing, bad-acting way about him that even though he is a bit awkward he makes for a pretty funny Jim Hawkins. Of course, his character is quite a bit more mature and eloquent in the book, but all things considered this change ...

Unforgiven!!!
Of course is a pleasure to see these brilliant silent films starring the great GARBO. "Flesh and the Devil" and "The Mysterious Lady" was part of my VHS collection. But "The Temptress" is a real surprise. Thanks to TCM for this and I (we) am waiting for "The Torrent" and more. UNFORGIVEN: What happened with the Garbo pics collection? In the middle of one of the portraits montages there is a ...
